I'm still not sure how I convinced my parents to buy an Intellivision. Maybe it was the fact that Atari seemed like such a kids' toy, but Intellivision had all of these promises to teach your children things (completely untrue), and would soon be able to be expanded with a keyboard (bupkus), eventually making it as powerful as a home computer (at this point, the marketing department was pretty much just conjuring crap up).

The "last" commercial game for the ZX Spectrum was Dr. Who - Dalek Attack in July of 1993. Although the straight decline was easily noticeable from the beginning of that same year, which can be measured by the number of published software. From this year's spring software companies did not accept any new Spectrum games from developers as well the last of Speccy magazines disappeared. New games release section of still alive press were practically empty, or even cancelled. In May Sinclair User, and in September Your Sinclair was also exiting.

The Nintendo Entertainment System, in all its 8-bit glory, began my exciting love affair with the great indoors. The video games on this list kept me company through many an elementary-school sleepover at friends' houses, provided endless fodder for recess playground conversation and even inspired a few short stories from yours truly (each plot revolving around the fantasy of getting sucked inside a video game). In honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, I dedicate this list and to Shigeru Miyamoto and all the other folks at Nintendo who made all that fun possible...oh, and of course my beloved aunt Jean who sent me and my siblings our first NES console.

In no particular order, presenting some of the greatest games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) spanning nearly every genre of play.

  Remember the '80's? Odds are if you're a gamer just hearing that makes you think of the good old Nintendo Entertainment System. The big N's first console to ship to North America, the N.E.S. was one of, if not the, most important game console of all time. It single handedly rejuvenated the video game market after the crash of 1983. It also was the birth console of some of the biggest names in gaming today. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Contra, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, they all started on Nintendo's gray box.

Whether you fancy Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, or Contra, surely there is a great deal of credit to be given to the classic titles that remain enjoyable and challenging.

A couple of years ago I wrote up a piece called Closing Time which examined the last official releases for popular game consoles, and some no-so-popular ones too. Earlier this year I finally got around to adding a Game Boy Advance entry. Yeah it had been over a year since the last game was released but I just kept hoping one more title would sneak out. If another game had been released after July 31st 2008 then the Game Boy namesake would have made it 20 years. Now of course this wasn't one single system that lasted 20 years, three distinct systems were tagged "Game Boy" over this span. Most of the longevity can be credited to the original B&W model which had a shelf life of just over a decade. I bet that little guy had the longest lifespan of any game system... well, did it?

A long time ago, there was a heartwarming Nintendo game full of potential, despite the limitations of the 8-bit system. We're speaking, of course, about "Wall Street Kid." Wall Street's still cool these days, right?

You may remember that I had a Sega Master System growing up. Well, that wasn't my only way to play games back then. We also had a family computer, and Dad would install computer games on it to keep us entertained. They were always free games - Dad hated spending money. He wouldn't buy gas, the car would move by itself to try and earn Dad's nod of approval.

Welcome to IGN's Videogame Hall of Fame, where we recognize what we consider to be the absolute pinnacle of videogame excellence. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the most prestigious honor given at IGN as only a handful of games out of the tens of thousands released will ever make it into these hallowed halls.

It's been two years since we last visited this topic, which is just about enough time for the controversy over our previous selections to have just about died down. Since that last list was created, we've had some changes on the PC staff. First, Dan set sail for the Grey Havens so we asked Jason to come over from that other site. Then Charles revealed his treachery by moving to work on the 360 site so we rescued Jeff Haynes from the PS3 team and reacquainted him with the goodness that is PC gaming.

The enhanced graphics adapter (that's what EGA stands for) was a huge step ahead from CGA. For a short while, the PC had the pole position as far as graphics were concerned. EGA supported 16 colors out of a palette of 64 at a resolution of 640×350, or the standard 16 colors (the ones accessible in text mode) at 320×200 or 640×200.

VGA graphics were introduced in April 1987 by IBM with the PS/2 series. At first, they usually were not called VGA, just PS/2 graphics. It was a far bigger step than from CGA to EGA, which is probably why game designers were more reluctant to embrace them.

Most people probably grew up with console games; depending on your age, anywhere from the Nintendo 64 all the way back to the Atari 2600 and before. But some of us also started out in the pre-Windows world of PC gaming: a land of conventional memory, ZMODEM downloads, IRQ conflicts, and other things we don't miss. But we do miss the games, because when consoles were still maturing, the PC platform had some of the best and most entertaining games ever written. And for those of you who never played games in the pre-3D world: yes, DOS also stands for Disk Operating System. Yes, it's that thing you get when you type "cmd" into the Run bar, and yes, the whole computer used to look like that. Can you believe it?

A list of all milestone games I have ever played or as I remember them. (At least all the ones I can find on here.) Roughly in order as I remember first playing them.

I bought a Nintendo 64 the day it came out, and I've been a huge fan ever since. The N64 is my favorite console ever. It had amazing sound and video and, as always, Nintendo made some incredibly fun games for it. The jump from the Super Nintendo to the Nintendo 64 is probably the biggest upgrade of all time. Going from a 2D 10MHz system to a 3D 93.75 MHz system with CD-quality voices blew me away. When you've been used to Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 is unbelievable. Suddenly there were huge immersive 3D worlds to explore, and characters who actually spoke.
