Neo Geo Pocket was SNK's first attempt SNK to enter the handheld market. Released in 1998 in Japan, the first console got poor sales, and within a year was upgraded to the Neo Geo Pocket Colour, the console that we all should have come to love.

As we all know, Sega gave up fairly early on its last two consoles. In the case of both the Dreamcast and the Saturn, many of the great games came at the end of their life and many didn't make it to the US. Here's a rundown on ones that we missed out here in America.

The RetroGaming 101 series is aimed at gamers who are just starting out in the classic gaming scene or are curious about an older console that they don't know much about yet. The NeoGeo Pocket Color was launched in the West ten years ago this month. Each day this week, starting from tomorrow, I'll be looking at a key game for the system and discussing its merits in terms of whether it's still worth playing today. Before all that, let's take a look at the machine itself and its history.

It seems like every gaming site has their own "Best of the Year" lists, but here at Racketboy, we will be taking a look at the best new games of 2007 that focus either focus on old-school gameplay or are remakes of classic games.

Everyone has their favourite Neo games, be it more popular games like Metal Slug and King of Fighters, to the slightly more obscure or unknown games like Waku Waku 7, Ninja Masters, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, and many, many more. Talk to anyone and they will all tell you very different things about what the best Neo games are, but seeing as this is my site I thought I'd throw up a list of my own personal faves, which might be helpful as a starting point for newcomers to the Neo Geo scene. This isn't meant to be a definitive list of the best Neo Geo games ever or anything like that, it's just my personal recommendations for games that I believe you can't afford to miss.

It wasn't necessarily that much better than the other consoles on the market at the time, it was just a hell of a lot more expensive. Not only that, but if you managed to somehow survive the $650 price tag the console hit you with, you'd still have to shell out another $200-$300 per game if you wanted anything to play on your shiny new console. It goes without saying that most gamers passed on the Neo Geo system, but the story still managed to have a happy ending. Over the years the Neo Geo consoles and arcade cabinets have become quite collectible around the internet and now these wonderful titles are getting a second chance on the Wii Virtual Console service.

Typically, my Cheapest Games Worth Your Time series looks for games that are $10 or less, but with the Neo-Geo, that just isn't an option. This 24-bit powerhouse has always been for only the most financially-blessed gamers with both the system and games retailing for hundreds of dollars each. With a hardcore following and a very limited supply of games, many game prices are still much more than most retro gamers are used to paying for a single title. Because of this, my "Cheap" Neo-Geo list will be rather short and I'll have to adjust my price targets as well.
