When Nintendo announced the Super Nintendo we all asked why? The NES was still king. Did we really want to spend money on a new system that would play basically the same games with slightly better graphics? And the first games released on the Super NES proved that point. A slightly more colorful version of "Super Mario" offered the same game play as it's original.

These days Nintendo has gamers flailing their arms around to the amusement of onlookers with the runaway success of the Wii. However before that Nintendo had it rough for a while. The Gamecube was completely leveled by the PS2 and original XBox and before the N64 backed the wrong horse by opting for cartridge games over the PS1 and its CD-ROM style games (which could hold much more information.) However before their downturn Nintendo ruled the landscape with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES.) Many still consider this the heyday of Nintendo games. With that in mind here's a look at the best this now retro system had to offer. This list isn't ranked due to its genre spanning nature.

On June 12th, 2006 Jason Lindholm wrote an article about his Top 5 Favorite NES Games. I'm also an avid gamer and the Nintendo was my first love so I hold many NES games near and dear to my heart. Today's video game systems have more in-depth storylines and better graphics but nothing beats the old classics. I have my own top five favorite games from the Nintendo but I thought I'd also add some comments about Jason's choices also.

The NES System (Nintendo Entertainment System) is perhaps the best system ever released.  Of course this is purely a personal opinion but many others must agree.  I have nothing against the newer systems, I love my GameCube and PS2 and cannot wait for the Wii to come out (although I don't like that name) but there is something about the older systems.  It was a simpler time for gamers.

Like every other form of electronic media, most video games are popular for a time and then fade away into disuse. The exact reason this occurs is different for every video game, but is usually a combination of new competing video games, advances in graphics, and low replay value. While quality video games will often spur the creation of a sequel, many times with few differences from its predecessor, few games actually last the test of time. For a very small number of games, despite improvements in video game technology, the quality of the game and more importantly, the replay value of the game, is so great that the game continues to flourish years and even decades after it is first published. With Science Fiction television and movies being so popular with the younger age bracket, it is of no surprise that such source material became popular fodder for video game productions. Even the first ever video arcade games such as Computer Space, Space War, and the world renowned classic Space Invaders were based on science fiction themes. Since the video game home console debuted in the mid 70s, there have been probably more science fiction video games made than movies and television series from the same genre. Although the original Xbox has only a life-span of four years (2001-2005), its impact on the gaming industry is permanent. From the inclusion of HDD in all consoles to Xbox Live, the Xbox did not lack in innovations. Over the last 15 years or so, we've seen a huge amount of fighting games. Mainly in the arcade where they became the most famous Fighting games are the games you would skip school to go to the arcade and play. There have been some bad, there have been some good, there have been some great. But there have also been the ones that are better then great, the ones that really influenced the genre for the better. This is what that list is for. It's for those top 5 fighters that were not only great, but groundbreaking and bringing in many newcomers into the fighting game genre.
