It's pretty easy to find a list of "The Top 10 Sega Saturn Games" or some similar ranking, but most of them were written back when the console was still on the retail scene and almost all of them only compare the games against other Saturn games.

The 16-bit generation was really the heyday of the 2D fighter.  It was the genre that defined the arcade of the late 80s and early 90s, fueled much of the gaming violence debate through the decade, and holds within its ranks the title that many point to when debating how Nintendo ultimately won the generation's console war over Sega.  And in the United States, we ate it up.  For many of us, dreams of the hits that sucked us into gaming came from our arcades, and ports of those same titles brought us to love our home consoles.

For my next revision to the Cheapest Games series , I wanted to revisit the Sega Saturn. The values of the popular Saturn games have increased significantly over the last few years - especially for complete copies of the game.  Because of this, I've bumped up my criteria for the list to games that are under $25.   Now keep in mind, the prices quoted below are for complete copies of the game in excellent condition.  If you want to save a lot of money, you can usually find disc-only versions of the games.

Usually, when you get a new-to-you console, you can usually find or remember the major games to check out. But what happens when you need something different to play? This is where the "Hidden Gems" come in.

After the success of the Genesis/Megadrive, Sega tried a little too hard to come out on top in the 32-bit generation. Even though they had the CD-Based Saturn in development, Sega also tried to offer existing Genesis owners a way to "upgrade" their console to a 32-bit machine that could offer more arcade-quality games.

When you add a console to your collection, the first thing you want to do is get a handful of games to keep you busy with your new toy. However, most of us can't spend afford to spend fat pile of cash for a few games. This budget-friendly list should help you quickly find which games will start you off well without emptying your wallet.

The RetroGaming 101 series is aimed at gamers who are just starting out in the classic gaming scene or are curious about an older console that they don't know much about yet. Before Sega made wave with the Genesis/Megadrive in the 16-bit era, it had its first international console release with the Sega Master System.  It didn't have nearly the success in the US as the Nintendo Entertainment System, but it had large market share in Europe and Brazil and still has quite a following.  We'll try to cover all the basics about the Master System, but if you have any other tips or tidbits of info about this little machine, feel free to share it in the comments below.

While most gamers probably think of the Genesis/MegaDrive as Sega's first console, the Master System System actually preceded the the 16-bit wonder but failed to adequately compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Everybody loves an underdog. There's something alluringly idealistic about the notion of the little guy taking on overwhelming odds and coming through triumphant. Unfortunately, this type of struggle doesn't always end with a result akin to David and Goliath's encounter.

The 16-bit era might just have been the most exciting time in the video game industry. Rivalries were never quite as intense as those between Nintendo and Sega, not to mention underdogs like NEC/Hudson (with the TurboGrafx-16) and SNK's Neo-Geo. Nintendo knew that in order to take back market share from Sega, their Super Nintendo Entertainment System would have to provide gamers with some show-stopping titles.

Okay, I get it. Many of you were not of the "Genesis does" crowd like I was as a kid. That doesn't mean I do not appreciate the Super Nintendo. I have both systems, I was a little late to the game that's all. As a kid I had the pleasure of bargain shopping for the SNES at the end of its run, plus all the trades I managed to do in school combined for me playing literally hundreds of games for the system. With my massive knowledge of this system I thought to do a follow up to my other Top 25 games list by choosing its main rival. Why 25? Well its only fair that I keep the number the same from my previous list that's all.

It's pretty easy to find a list of "The Top 10 Dreamcast Games" or some similar ranking, but most of them were written back when the console was still on the retail scene and almost all of them only compare the games against other Dreamcast games. This is all fine if the Dreamcast is the only console you own and ever plan to own. However, I know for a fact that most Dreamcast owners now are hardcore retro fans that happen to own a few different consoles - both old and new. There may also be a few gamers out there wondering if they should bother adding a Dreamcast to their collection. Because of this, I thought it would be a good idea to develop a list of games that are still relevant in today's gaming market because of their unique gameplay that has not been improved upon on other consoles.

Part Three of Four

After the Sega Game Gear and before Sony's PSP, there was one other portable system that held its own against the might of Nintendo's Game Boy. Or, well, it could have if it lived longer than a year.

There have been many amazing game titles of many different varieties, so it'd be near impossible to really get a perfect list of top video games of all time. This, however, is my attempt. These are what I consider my top ten video games of all time, keeping in mind two things. First, I tried to include only one game for each series. I could easily make a top ten list that was half Legend of Zelda games, but what's the point of that? Second, there are popular games and series of games that I've just never gotten into, like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, or Halo, so they won't be included.
