Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) - 1985-1995 - Classic Gaming - 0 views

  •
The future of videogames looked bleak. The catastrophic crash of 1984 had wiped out or severely weakened all the major home videogame companies, and home computers were becoming more and more popular. It seemed as if the home videogame system would become a thing of the past.

Magnavox Odyssey² - 1978-1983 - Classic Gaming - 0 views

  •
Magnavox started the video game revolution in 1972 with the release of the Odyssey, the world's first home video game system. For the next five years, the company released a number of standalone consoles in the Odyssey line, giving them numerical suffixes like Odyssey 100, Odyssey 400, and so on. Finally, in 1977, Magnavox signaled a new generation of Odyssey by announcing the Odyssey², a dedicated unit that was to contain 24 games and accommodate four simultaneous players. However, the bottom was quickly dropping out of the over-saturated dedicated console market, and Magnavox scrapped the 24-game Odyssey² in favor of an expandable cartridge-based model. The company released it in 1978, touting it as "The Ultimate Computer Video Game System."

Arcade Games in Your Hands - Part I - Atari Lynx « Arcade Heroes - 0 views

  •
Ever since Space Invaders first came out for the Atari 2600, popular arcade games have found their way to virtually every game console on the market. As such it creates an interesting look at the transition from arcade to console. It is without question that the arcade versions of the games themselves are superior - whether graphically or audibly or even with the way it controls. Naturally modern systems are able to recreate classic games without any trouble but we still enjoy the games on the original hardware anyways.

Atari Lynx Buyer's Guide - Retro Feature at IGN - 0 views

  •
Atari's first -- and last -- venture into handheld gaming might not have been commercially successful, but it was most certainly a special time in gaming. With hardware designed by the engineers of the Amiga, and a first party lineup from legendary Commodore-era developer Epyx, the Lynx would prove to be the beginning and end of a new age for Atari. The Lynx was slinging around 16-bit pseudo-3D while Nintendo's green-and-purple screens struggled to replicate NES games. It might have been the unique hardware design with unlimited sprite-pushing and hardware scaling, or simply the way it was so dominated by a strong first party line-up, but it's hard to ignore the cult appeal of Atari's handheld wonder.

Well, today I stand before you and I am professing my adoration for a different kind of lynx - The Atari Lynx! To this day, it still remains my favorite portable system, and with good reason. Top 10 Best-Selling Atari 2600 Games - Retro Feature at IGN - 0 views

  •
The Atari 2600 was not without software. The first mainstream videogame console sold over 30 million units on the strength of both its newness and the breadth of its game library, which numbered in the hundreds... as in, several hundreds. But the rush to publish games for the Atari 2600 was also the system's greatest weakness, as consumer confidence in the Atari 2600 -- and the entire industry -- was severely damaged by scores of high-profile bad games.

The Top 10 Best Video Games Ever Played - By Jackson Villarez - 0 views

  •
There have been many amazing game titles of many different varieties, so it'd be near impossible to really get a perfect list of top video games of all time. This, however, is my attempt. These are what I consider my top ten video games of all time, keeping in mind two things. First, I tried to include only one game for each series. I could easily make a top ten list that was half Legend of Zelda games, but what's the point of that? Second, there are popular games and series of games that I've just never gotten into, like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, or Halo, so they won't be included.
