Celestia - Space Simulation - Primary and Secondary - 5 views

  •
"Welcome to Celestia ... The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions. Celestia runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. "

Celestia is great - and it works in tandem with Stellarium - some more freeware - we started our students off with an examination of the Earth (Stellarium) and how it relates to the Solar System and then you can move on to Celestia - a chance to explore further out into space
  •
http://www.stellarium.org/ check this out - we have both Stellarium and Celestia on the student image - "Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go." both freeware

Wikipedia - 0 views

If you want your students to use the internet for research, but find that sites such as Wikipedia can overwhelm students and contain too much information - then you might like to take a look at the Simple English Wikipedia. The Simple English Wikipedia uses simple English words and grammar to explain topics.  There are 70,000 articles on the site, a fraction of the 3 million articles that are on the main wikipedia page, but enough for most students. Check before you send kids towards the site that it contains the topics you want them to research. If it doesn't you could always create a page and add the information yourself - or make it a goal for the research project to write a page!

Are Classroom Gadgets Worth the Money? | Education | Change.org - 2 views

  • 66% of teachers surveyed indicated that they received less than eight hours of technology training in the previous year. 13% if those received no training at all. That is simply absurd.
  • Here is a suggestion though. Instead of pouring money into the latest and greatest item and relying on the "wow" factor to keep students paying attention, schools should invest in professional development workshops that teach instructors how to create interactive and dynamic learning environments using the technology they already have. If they do this, schools will find that their dollar goes a lot farther towards improving student performance.

An article exploring the amount of professional development teachers receive and the effect is has on the hardware  that is purchased for use in their classroom. Some scary statistics are also included in the article

Creating an ePub Book Using Pages - How to Make the eBook Cover Look Good | iPad Academy - 0 views

  •  Apple’s guidelines for ePubs tell us to only use inline images. That is, images that act like text elements in terms of formatting. However, I discovered you can violate this rule in one place, the first page, the page that becomes the cover image. You can use a floating image and stretch it to fill the margins so you don’t get a white border. Be sure to check the box to use the first page as the book cover image. Ignore warnings Pages generates once the file is converted to ePub. (A cover size of 600px x 800px works well for iBooks and other book distributors, though other sizes are possible).
