Bottom line the assessments need to be a tool to measure learning and growth and not as a way that set students up for failure. Assessments need to be used by the teacher as well as the student to guide student learning. Assessments are a tool and   not an end to themselves

When people ask about the inspiration for our style of videos, I often say that our videos reflect the way that I wish I had learned in school. My learning style wasn't a good match for the way I was taught. Recently we completed a custom video project with the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) that focuses on a Project Based Learning or "PBL", and boy did it open my eyes. I can now see that I needed teachers who put PBL to work. I needed to get up from my desk and engage. I needed to work on a real-world issue and use creativity and problem solving - what are known as 21st century skills these days. This video is an introduction to PBL and how it impacted a science teacher's students and helped their community.

School students are one of the groups served by the Library. Today's young people are exposed to more information than any previous generation. The sheer quantity of information students are now expected to process and manipulate makes critical thinking and information literacy skills more important than ever. To this end the Library has recently developed the ergo website, a learning and teaching tool for secondary teachers and students that supports the instruction of information literacy and critical thinking skills in the classroom. ergo provides not only online resources but also a conceptual framework for the development of the skills students need to evaluate information.

Origins of the internet - a great article to introduce the internet to students. Wow 15 years have passed. No wonder high school students don't see access to information on demand as 'wow'. it has always been like that. I bet teachers can remember life before ... some need to let go and move towards the light. :)

Unit of work for Second Classroom Project. Students undertake a PBL task using Skoolaborate (http://www.skoolaborate.com) as thier presentation tool. Uses Group Ning for journal and student blog, Group FlickR to document progress. Project could also work using Google Sketch Up and Voice Thread. Final project solutions will be rezzed in Second Life on the Island of Jokadia for external viewing by PBL teachers. Time frame 6 weeks.
