You have 10 days to catch as many fish as you can. The money you make from these fish will need to support your family for the next month. Each fish nets $2. Each day, you'll choose whether you want to take none, one, two, or three fish for the day. There are two other fisher folk also trying to catch as many fish as they can - they will follow your lead, and base their catch on yours. The lake in which you are fishing can only support 20 fish (that is the carrying capacity of the lake). Every night, the fish that remain after a day of fishing will reproduce at a rate of 25% (for the purpose of this game, we round to the nearest whole number). However, the total number of fish can't exceed 20. For instance, if there are 12 fish, they will multiply to 15 overnight. If there are 19, they will multiply to 20. Ready to play?

A research paper by John Seely Brown, Allan Collins and Paul Duguid, one of my favorites - Authors discuss learning theory and how conventional schooling too often ignores the influence of school culture on what is learned in school. Good background for why PBL works, especially the info on using tools.

Contrarian Investor Predicts Economic Crash in China - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • As most of the world bets on China to help lift the global economy out of recession, Mr. Chanos is warning that China’s hyperstimulated economy is headed for a crash, rather than the sustained boom that most economists predict.
    • Aaron Shaw

How will the Chinese economic crash effect the world economy?
  • “Bubbles are best identified by credit excesses, not valuation excesses,” he said in a recent appearance on CNBC. “And there’s no bigger credit excess than in China.”
  • Mr. Chanos, 51, whose hedge fund, Kynikos Associates, based in New York, has $6 billion under management, is hardly the only skeptic on China. But he is certainly the most prominent and vocal.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Most economists and governments expect Chinese growth momentum to continue this year, buoyed by what remains of a $586 billion government stimulus program that began last year, meant to lift exports and consumption among Chinese consumers.
  • Mr. Chanos often responds to critics of short-selling by pointing to the critical role they played in identifying problems at Enron, Boston Market and other “financial disasters” over the years.
  •
"James S. Chanos built one of the largest fortunes on Wall Street by foreseeing the collapse of Enron and other highflying companies whose stories were too good to be true."

'The Objective of Education Is Learning, Not Teaching' - Knowledge@Wharton - 26 views

  • This involves an intense effort on the part of the explainer to get into the other person's mind, so to speak, and that exercise is at the heart of learning in general. For, by practicing repeatedly how to create links between my mind and another's, I am reaching the very core of the art of learning from the ambient culture. Without that skill, I can only learn from direct experience; with that skill, I can learn from the experience of the whole world. Thus, whenever I struggle to explain something to someone else, and succeed in doing so, I am advancing my ability to learn from others, too.

Immersive PBL: Indiana Project Reaches Far Beyond the Classroom | Edutopia - 0 views

Anyone who wonders whether project-based learning can deliver rigorous, meaningful learning should pay attention to the lessons that emerged from a remarkable project called Dots in Blue Water.
  •
This project is an awesome example of how far students can go with real-world challenges. And it all started because a teacher was wise enough to take a student's question seriously.
