"The Globally Competent Student
Sandra L. Russo and Leigh Ann Osborne
What characteristics would a globally competent
student possess? What
does this student know
upon graduation day that a student wi
thout this sort of education
does not? For some students, all
or most of these characteristics are ones that s/he will find ways to develop even if the resources
are lacking. For others, they must
be convinced of the need to develop global competence. It is
the charge of the administrators who decide, th
e faculty who teach, the
legislators who fund, and
the potential employers [private se
ctor leaders] who motivate, to
leave no doubts in the student's
mind about the importance of becoming a globa
lly competent student. Our objective, as
NASULGC institutions, is to de
velop globally competent undergr
aduate and graduate students
who will become globally competent citizens. "

Developed through an extensive process of consultation, the Department has established its first-ever fully articulated international strategy for 2012-2016. The strategy is designed to simultaneously advance two strategic goals: strengthening U.S. education and advancing our nation's international priorities. The strategy reflects the value and necessity of:
A world-class education for all students;
Global competencies for all students;
International benchmarking and applying lessons learned from other countries; and
Education diplomacy and engagement with other countries.
"In matters of national security, environmental sustainability, and economic development, what we do as a nation and in our everyday lives is inextricably intertwined with what governments, businesses, and individuals do beyond our borders."

Our 6th grade collaborative project with a focus on global issues. We are looking for schools to join us with the hopes of working on some collaborative lyrics in Google Docs, remixing audio tracks shared between schools and possibly a skype session. We are running the project 5 times this year for 6 weeks at a time.
Email me if you are interested i taking part at one point.

In my Learning Through Projects series, I wrote about crafting questions that drive projects. Developing interesting, relevant, and meaningful driving questions is challenging. To help teachers with project based learning, Global Digital Citizenship Foundation has free publications with ideas and resource links. The publications are PDFs and are licensed under Creative Commons, so you may distribute or print them as long as you do not modify them in any way.

Mission
We surface authentic voices around the world through group process and participatory media creation. Our programs support people in sharing and bearing witness to stories that lead to learning, action, and positive change.
What We Do
For nearly twenty years, the Center has been supporting people in sharing meaningful stories from their lives. Our unique workshops assist participants in producing short, first-person narratives that can be presented in a variety of traditional and social media formats. We provide non-threatening production environments in which the process of creation is valued as much as the stories created.
Through partnerships with a range of organizations, institutions, and funders, we offer story making and story distribution services that prioritize the power of individual voices. Whether you're interested in storytelling for professional development, as a reflective practice, as a pedagogical strategy, or as a vehicle for education, community mobilization, or advocacy, we are recognized globally as experts in all things digital storytelling.
