Information Architecture | Web Style Guide 3 - 1 views

  • Organize the site content into taxonomies and hierarchies of information;
  • Research and design the core site navigation concepts;
  • Information architecture encompasses a broad range of design and planning disciplines, and the boundaries among information architecture, technical design, user interface, and graphic design are necessarily blurred by the need for all of these communities of practice to cooperate to produce a cohesive, coherent, and consistent experience for the site user.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • if the underlying organization of the site and its content is poorly constructed, visual or interactive design will not fix the problems.

    What I like... - Be able to scan the overall works on a single page - A brief information with a couple of pictures on the first page helps me choose what I want to see - Fast move to each page What need to be improved... - It requires to scroll down a lot - Not enough additional information and images when moving into each project page (the amount of information seems almost same as the first page shows) - Not a strong Header - Related images of each project are not connected to each other but show up separatedly

    I like that the page is clean and readable. The simple layout make navigation easy, however many of the pages have far too much information on them. I enjoy reading as much as the next person, but for a design portfolio, I feel that the images should convey the ideas more than words. I like that the contact information is readily available and isn't too distracting at the bace of most of the pages.  The pages move way too fast. One can control where they go but the pages fly by kinda erratically. I like the personal touch, however don't understand why people put their picture in their portfolio. I appreciate her looking professional, however care more about her designs. I don't care for the sounds. I like the fact that it comes in automatically disabled, but then what is the point? If I didn't scroll to the bottom and look at the very light and very tiny font, than I would have never known it existed.

    Likes: 1) Nice large photos 2) Great information about each works materials and dimensions. 3) News feed is nice to keep track of her work. Dislikes: 1) I wish there was a language choice section rather in both languages. Makes the page look busy. 2) Home buttons move from side to top - hard to keep track of and move backwards. 3) Biography is more like a resume, I wish it was more informative about her and her work.

Starting Out Organized: Website Content Planning The Right Way - Smashing Magazine | Sm... - 1 views

  • Site Map Diagrams A visual site map 17 is quick to make, fairly expressive and easy to change. People have all sorts of methods for building site map diagrams. Whatever your tool, the diagram is a useful way to demonstrate hierarchy. It clearly shows the relationships between pages and tells you where your website is too shallow or deep. What’s it for? To visually explain the relationships between pages on your website. What’s good about it? Nothing better illustrates the hierarchy of a website than a diagram with lines and arrows indicating the relationships between pages. Clients naturally understand it. What’s bad about it? The actual relationships between pages can be hard to grasp. What looks good on a chart might not work well on a website. And a site map diagram is not really useful during the development phase, quickly becoming a dead documents. In sum A site map diagram is a quick way to sketch navigation and hierarchy. Don’t try to cram in other bits of information that just don’t fit. Likes: 1. The "box" theme correlates with the name of the org. and is a nice visual showcasing element for photos. 2. Icons at the top of the page take you down to the specific client section you clicked on, since it's a very long page to scroll 3. "Back to top" option is helpful, since the page is very long. Dislikes: 1. The descriptions of each client/project take a while to load (at top of page), so it's hard to understand what's going on until you've scrolled down and realized the top is an index, by which time the descriptions have loaded..... 2. There is no way to see larger images--only the thumbnails that appear in the box theme. 3. I think there needs to be more information (like an About section) about the company, as well as more information about the clients/projects being shown.

    Likes- I like the icons at the side of each page, and the menu bar is a great if you want to return to a project. Dislikes- It looks like she designed this portfolio on a 27 inch Imac. When loading pages I had to scroll side to side to see all the information, and that is clearly a waste of my time. Next please. Her projects look very interesting and compelling, but not enough information is provided in the graphics, or titles. I am assuming she likes to be a bit mysterious. One major problem with her page is her image location. Its locked, and she has at least 10 menu icons per page. That means I have to scroll down to see all her icons and then scroll back up to see the image. Another fantastic waste of my time. I think if she solved just a few issues she would have an amazing portfolio, but due to the lack of thought put into the website design I wonder about her other design abilities. Sorry Kristin. C- on this one.

    Like:-Overall Layout is clear and concise/simple-Navigation bar remains constant at all levels-Contact information is very clear-Load Sequence of projects is very interesting, and looks great when done-Large thumbnail images -Simple project description on each page; not too distracting and a good balance of images and text Don't Like/Needs Improvement-Page is too simple when you first open it; looks like there is information missing-Projects load too slowly-When you first load a project, it defaults to a blank box, rather than automatically loading the first image -Could be helpful to have a thumbnail image associated with each project to give a quick glimpse/overview -Overall, the site could be a little larger; only fills a small portion of my screen.

    What I like... - Branches that come out from bigger titles - Easy to jump into the other work images and to come back - Clear organization of works with proper details What need to be improved... - PDF file rinks on the left and top make me confused and give less impact on the main manu on the bottom - Taking a little time to show related images - Since worked by Flash, web address doesn't change when I move around on the web site

    After entry the Home Page is very simple to control with text only for 2nd level titles The T-shirts page has a link to her online store, opening in another tab; good marketing. The Squid Chair page has a small amount of text, interesting process diagrams and photos of the finished product, and a .pdf of her class presentation board. The pdf lets you have a simple website page that doesn't have too much information for viewers but can provide a lot of information for someone who is interested in more. This is something I may try to do. Once you enlarge a thumbnail in a second level of 2D category you need to restart from 2nd level to get back to 3rd level.

    + Large thumbnails allow for plenty of information about the project the link will take you to + absence of text unless you rollover an image allows for very visual and uncluttered aesthetic + Site map in upper right allows for easy navigation - Length of page means that not all projects are immediately visible. - Button to navigate back to home after a project could be larger - The fact that links to projects is not included in the main site navigation is not readily apparent

    + Beginning animation is unique and grabs viewers interest and loads quickly + Photo collage provides visual information about the projects and creates a unique aesthetic + Loosely organized navigation makes exploring the site more exciting and allows for opportunities for discovery + Artist's eclectic and creative personality comes across with the website design - Sometimes difficult to find and somewhat unintuitive links can be confusing - Abstract project categories can make navigating to a particular page or interest difficult - Lack of color at main project navigation creates a somewhat bland aesthetic

    What I like... - Use of two different colors (simple but clear) - Showing thumbnail images that interest me - A simple composition of overall web design What need to be improved... - It is confusing to figure out the relationship between thumbnail pictures and contents - It is hard to see the hierarchy of contents (it makes me to keep forgeting where I am and how I get into the page...) - A weak first page with little information

    Logical horizontal navigation bar, wide range of work demonstrates abilities, Projects provide the right amount of information Slide show on home page flashes too fast, contact and downloads page too redundant, it takes too many clicks to get to the images of a project

    three good things: unique animation of images to form logo letters nice menu bar large grasp/spectrum of expertise (corparate, retail, inst., housing, etc.) three bad things: I am not a fan of having to click to enter the site this page reminds me of a pop-up advertisement the blog animation spinner is distracting and doesn't share information
