    Good: 1. The buttons and navigation style is cartoony and interesting, which gives a feel for this guy's personal aesthetic in his work. 2. After clicking a tab (for medium of work), there's a visible list of the content on that page that is shown on the left. 3. There's buttons on left content bar to navigate through pages, but also at the top to navigate through sub-sections of the content (e.g. multiple ads for a single ad campaign). Bad: 1. The content info at the top of his page uses a font that I don't think matches his illustrated/stylized font. It only sticks out because it's the only area of the page that uses different font. 2. After clicking on a link from his home page, you can't get back onto the intro page unless you shorten/modify the URL. 3. When the content list on the left side of the page contains many things, it's annoying to have to scroll to find the last page you viewed after clicking on a single piece.

  • Site Map Diagrams A visual site map 17 is quick to make, fairly expressive and easy to change. People have all sorts of methods for building site map diagrams. Whatever your tool, the diagram is a useful way to demonstrate hierarchy. It clearly shows the relationships between pages and tells you where your website is too shallow or deep. What’s it for? To visually explain the relationships between pages on your website. What’s good about it? Nothing better illustrates the hierarchy of a website than a diagram with lines and arrows indicating the relationships between pages. Clients naturally understand it. What’s bad about it? The actual relationships between pages can be hard to grasp. What looks good on a chart might not work well on a website. And a site map diagram is not really useful during the development phase, quickly becoming a dead documents. In sum A site map diagram is a quick way to sketch navigation and hierarchy. Don’t try to cram in other bits of information that just don’t fit. What I like... - Use of two different colors (simple but clear) - Showing thumbnail images that interest me - A simple composition of overall web design What need to be improved... - It is confusing to figure out the relationship between thumbnail pictures and contents - It is hard to see the hierarchy of contents (it makes me to keep forgeting where I am and how I get into the page...) - A weak first page with little information

    Likes: 1. Because the site takes a while to load, the "Loading..." image you see is an illustrated heart beating, and it's really interesting to look at while you wait. 2. Content is all listed on left--easy navigation 3. Color scheme is very attractive, and still works well with content. Dislikes: 1. Can't scroll using trackpad--you have to use the side bar 2. Content still takes a long time to load, even after waiting for the initial homepage to load as well. 3. It's hard to distinguish between the heads and subheads on the left--maybe bolding the heads would make them pop a little better?

    Sick portfolio. The organization of her content is really effective. Her skills page essentially replaces the need for a resume. The only thing I don't like about this is that the nav is always on a slightly different part of each page. If she had it floating somehow, or at least kept it in the same coordinates on each page, that'd be much better, as her content is always aligned upper left.

    After waiting for the loading bar, I'd rather see the main table of contents rather than having to click another button. The contents layout is great, it could use Patrick's name at the top though. I find it annoying to have to click on the title of the open gallery to close it before being able to open another title tab. I'd rather just be able to switch directly.

    Trying the link now, it doesn't work... maybe he didn't pay for November domain But, here's my critique: Home Page Redundancy: The button links in the header lead to the same place as the large title buttons along the left side of the page. On second level: I like the close (X), back () buttons. They read well in a line with the title. The page content is small. It is obvious the layouts were made for a different media prior to the website. Having a third level with enlarged text/images would be helpful for understanding the content. Contact page: Having direct contact from the website is a good idea.

Information Architecture | Web Style Guide 3 - 1 views

  • Organize the site content into taxonomies and hierarchies of information;
  • Research and design the core site navigation concepts;
  • Information architecture encompasses a broad range of design and planning disciplines, and the boundaries among information architecture, technical design, user interface, and graphic design are necessarily blurred by the need for all of these communities of practice to cooperate to produce a cohesive, coherent, and consistent experience for the site user.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • if the underlying organization of the site and its content is poorly constructed, visual or interactive design will not fix the problems.

    + The main bar appears to stay the same while the content changes, allowing for intuitive and easy navigation + Minimalistic design makes it clean, simple, yet interesting + All of the project links are on a single page and readily visible - Thumbnails for the projects are somewhat small, difficult to see what each project is - Strategy to navigate within projects adds a level of difficulty, arrows to switch between projects and multiple blocks to navigate within a project not very intuitive - Extra space could have been used to include more and larger content
  •
    Pros-Simple and easy to navigate. - Well organized images. Work organized into projects from a main portfolio page with a slideshow for each project.-Logo on every screen reminding the view who's portfolio they are looking at. Cons -Very Simple, the home page isn't very attention grabbing. -There are some blank spots on the project selection page which looks unprofessional. -All of the text appears to be pixilated.

    What I like... - A simple composition - Thumbnail pictures that show up when I move a mouse cursor on the first picture - Work images that are automatically open on a new window page rather than on tha continously same page - A use of a couple of colors with white text (Not too many colors.. but an accent color on main title things - Enough spacing on a consistent way between contents What need to be improved... - Maybe, a little too small text? ... Personally, I really like this web design and do not see any other things to be improved...

    Likes: Elegant Layout, easy to understand. No pages to worry about flipping through, everything is there. The black background works well with the content of the images, and the text. You can tell it was done by a designer. Dislikes: Scrolling down is a little old fashioned, and could lead some people to overlook what's on the bottom of the page. Format wouldn't work so well with separate projects.

    His nav is too try-hard for my taste. The typography is tooooo big and distracting from the content. That and the language he uses isn't always clear what it is he's linking to in the nav. The nav in the footer is much better. Dude's a good poster designer though.

    Really simple, beautiful portfolio site. He only has one trade he showcases and that is just fine, allows for simplicity. His site is easy to navigate, has clear definitions of content, and good typography. A good trick he's done for his homepage is shown one strong piece of his that communicates what he's about. He only includes on his site what is necessary. Less is more.

    What works for this is that immediately you can see that he is a creative thinker. There is a deliberate effort at communicating this with his background image. His work is strong. But the greyscale design of his site with an abundance of curvy lines makes italic typography (his font face) difficult to read. And there is no navigation system, no organization or hierarchy of information. So if he showed his portfolio to a potential client who wanted a design poster done, they might not get far enough down his portfolio before getting bored. One-page portfolios are cool but he needs nav-links and an organization of content.

    DISLIKES... - Quick Icons; The icons used to navigate through his work, move really quickly & pop up really fast. - Small font: in combination with some of the light colors & mix with white, the titles were hard to read cause the fonts were so small - Hidden Categories: each time i refreshed the page, the menu icons were just randomly "dropped" onto the page to where sometimes some menu icons were hidden. - Small Viewbox: It is nice to have a formatted size to view his work, however, for some I felt it was too small. There were so much content for some of his work, that shrinking it down to that formatted size didn't do justice to what his work look liked LIKES... - Simplicity: his home page looks clean to where the main focus is the menu icons that really encourages you to interact with his website - Menu Icons: they are really unique & interactive - No Need Back: through the integration of his menu icons, there is never really a need to press the back button. - Interaction: At the very least, every person that comes to his portfolio page would be interested because of the interaction that is required to navigate through his page. It is very playful yet simple
