The Hardest Forgiveness | Support for Special Needs - 0 views

  • Like a lot of people who write about special needs parenting, I get asked for advice by new parents. Honestly, I’m a little surprised by this, since much of my writing, including the better part of my book, goes into great detail of exactly how poorly prepared I was, and probably remain, to take on the task of successfully raising a daughter with a disability. I like to think I make for a good cautionary tale, but I feel woefully inadequate to the advice-giving gig. When I think about it, however, I do feel qualified to give one piece of advice. It’s the one I’ve had to make myself follow time and time again, and yet it’s also the one I’ve always been the least comfortable with. With apologies to delicate sensibilities, I share it with you now: Forgive yourself when you fuck up.

    What:
Middle and High schools offer unique challenges for implementing a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). The major key is to build school-wide systems that simultaneously addresses  the need for academic and behavioral support and ensures every student has the skills to earn a high school diploma. The answers to behavioral and academic MTSS are right inside every staff development session, but a plan that includes the use of multiple assessment tools to foster data based decision making requires a shift in process for many schools. This session will provide ideas, work time and technology tools that support MTSS implementation and help MS/HS  with the shift. Session work will be differentiated to meet the needs of individual schools, with facilitator support provided.

Call for Applicants, Youth in Development (YiD) internship program - 0 views

  •
    Visit usidc.org for more information

The summer 2014 Youth in Development (YiD) internship program is now open for applications from November 11, 2013, through January 29, 2014.

The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) launched the YiD internship program in 2013 with funding support from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF).  The YiD program focuses on youth with disabilities  from across the U.S. who are interested in international development and foreign affairs careers.  The project follows from a vision, core to USICD's mission, to increase disability inclusion in U.S. foreign affairs by supporting future generations of Americans with disabilities to invest their skills and talents in this field.

The summer 2014 YiD internship program will bring a group of talented graduate students, recent graduates, and rising college juniors and seniors with disabilities to Washington, DC, for nine weeks. This will include a one-week training and orientation program followed by an eight-week internship at an international organization in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.  USICD will cover the cost of fully-accessible housing during the YiD progam, reimburse travel expenses to and from DC, and provide a limited stipend. It is anticipated that the program will run from May 25 to July 25, 2014. These dates may be subject to change.

    What:
Wide use of RTI/MTSS as a prevention framework in general education poses potential problems for unprepared special educators and their programs. For example, RTI as a schoolwide prevention framework is technically incompatible with traditional severe discrepancy models, which require students to experience academic failure prior to identification. This interactive workshop will address these types of concerns and provide recommendations for avoiding potential legal pitfalls associated with RTI implementation.

The Behavior Code: A Practical Guide to Understanding and Teaching the Most Challenging... - 0 views

    What:
About 10 percent of kids in school--approximately 9-13 million students--struggle with mental health problems. Whether they're running out of a class, not doing their homework, disrupting others, or quietly being defiant, their behavior is often misread and misdiagnosed. The frustration level teachers face can be overwhelming, and traditional behavior approaches not only prove to be unhelpful but can even exacerbate a student's behavior. Jessica Minahan will provide empathetic, flexible, practical, and more importantly, effective strategies for preventing inappropriate behavior from the start in the classroom, and dealing with it once it's already happening.

My Special Needs Gratitude List: 25 Little Things | Friendship Circle -- Special Needs ... - 0 views

  • Every Thanksgiving, I ask everyone at the table what he or she is most thankful for.  My family is truly blessed, so there’s plenty to say in that conversation.  But in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving my friends and I have also noticed all the little things for which we give silent thanks every day.  These are the things that make a complicated life much easier, but usually aren’t part of the discussion at Thanksgiving dinner.  Perhaps you’ll have a few more to add to the list, too.
