What: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that represents a range of symptoms from mild to severe and affects overall developmental status-in social communication and other relevant cognitive and motor behaviors. In 2013, a study released by the CDC found the number of children affected by ASD to be roughly 2% of the population, or 1 in 50. Communities of support for individuals with ASD are necessary in order to bring about effective treatment, education, and inclusion. This conference is open to all interested persons (teachers, therapists, counselors, medical professionals, parents, and community members).

What: Twenty years ago, telling a parent that their child suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder or Bipolar Disorder most often resulted in grief, denial, or even outrage. Today, studies show that parents diagnose their own children with mental disorders at a much higher rate than psychiatric experts. Schools are often caught between shrinking resources and increasing demands, as more children are identified as mentally disabled. Over two days, this workshop will help clear away some of the confusion and controversy surrounding mental health issues that most often affect school-age children. You will learn in practical terms, how a child with ADHD thinks, what motivates an oppositional child, which kids might actually have Bipolar Disorder, and which are simply moody. You will learn how psychiatric medications work to help, and sometimes to hurt. You will learn about the warning signs for violence in children and adolescents. Lastly, you will have a chance to ask advice about specific mental health issues in your school. In short, this workshop is designed to help you understand, teach, and advocate for your students with mental illness.

Before stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall began their rise to popularity in the 1970s, treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) focused on behavioral therapy. But as concerns build over the mounting dosages and extended treatment periods that come with stimulant drugs, clinical researchers are revisiting behavioral therapy techniques. Whereas stimulant medications may help young patients focus and behave in the classroom, research now suggests that behaviorally based changes make more of a difference in the long-term.

The field of prosthetics is perhaps the best example of humanity and technology coming together. For proof, consider this video of 4-year-old Emma, born with a muscular condition that prohibited her from moving her arms freely — until modern technology built a pair of "magic arms" customized just for her.
Children with autism spectrum disorders who also have serious behavioral problems responded better to medication combined with training for their parents than to treatment with medication alone, Yale researchers and their colleagues report in the February issue of Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 required health plans that offer mental health and substance use disorder benefits to cover them to the same extent that they cover medical/surgical benefits. Among other things, it prohibits having treatment limits or financial coverage requirements such as copayments or deductibles that are more restrictive than a plan’s medical coverage. Interim regulations issued in 2010 clarified some issues about implementing the law.
What: The purpose of the training is to provide you with the tools needed to execute a Health Literacy program at your local level. Parents who take the Health Literacy training will learn to use the book, What to Do When Your Child Gets Sick, as a tool in promoting the safety and well-being of your children. Health Literacy Training proves that the challeng-es of low literacy can be surmounted: that parents can gain the knowledge and skills to care for a sick child, thereby relieving the pressure on the health care system and reducing medical cost to the public. In short, empowering parents in this way has enabled them to become the first line of defense for their children's health-and has untold benefits for society. This unique training includes in-struction in Strategy Implementation, Project Management, Parent and Staff Motivation, Marketing and Community Relations.
