The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Toolkit was developed to raise awareness, promote surveillance and screening, and ensure that all affected children receive appropriate and timely interventions.

(Reuters Health) - Despite no federal or uniform state requirements to do so, all school districts should have a doctor to oversee school health services, according to a policy statement from a group of American pediatricians. "Our hope is that a policy statement like this will start to get people talking," said Dr. Cynthia Devore, a co-author of the statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Child Health Day - October 5, 2009 Every Child Deserves a Medical Home Monday, October 5th is Child Health Day (CHD).  Since 1928, the President has proclaimed one day each year National Child Health Day and people across America have worked together to prevent problems and improve childhood health. For the first 32 years, the day was observed on May 1, but since 1960, Child Health Day is observed the first Monday in October. 

Last month, Dr. James M. Perrin, a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, became the president-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a professional group of 60,000 doctors. A primary care physician, Perrin is particularly interested in addressing chronic childhood illness during his three years of leadership at the academy, first as president-elect, then president, then president emeritus. Childhood obesity and other chronic health conditions: the continuing growth in childhood asthma, and the tremendous growth in mental health conditions and developmental conditions like autism. We’ve got three or four major epidemics really growing among children and adolescents in America.

Recess is an essential part of a child's school day that should never be taken away as punishment if a kid misbehaves or has poor academic performance, the American Academy of Pediatrics said Monday. The academy released its first ever position policy on recess in school, which it calls a necessary break from the physical and mental demands of a typical day at school. The statement, which was published online Dec. 31 in Pediatrics, adds that recess should be a period of free, unstructured play.

Play is essential to the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being of children beginning in early childhood. It is a natural tool for children to develop resiliency as they learn to cooperate, overcome challenges, and negotiate with others.

The HCCA program is a collaborative effort of health professionals and child care providers working to improve the early education and health and safety of children in out-of-home child care. This includes increasing access to preventive health services, safe physical environments, and a medical home for all children. The program also strives to increase pediatrician participation and effectiveness in providing high-quality care and promoting early education and children's health and well-being.

In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics partnered with national child care and health organizations to build on the achievements of two successful campaigns: The Back to Sleep Campaign and the Healthy Child Care America Campaign. This effort, known as the Healthy Child Care American Back to Sleep Campaign, aimed to promote the health and safety of infants in child care settings by providing education and outreach to child care providers regarding safe sleep recommendations.

These Bright Futures training and implementation materials funded by the Commonwealth Fund with support from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, have been developed to facilitate implementation of the Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents, 3rd Edition, at the practice system level (for tools and resources to use in conjunction with health supervision visits, see the Bright Futures Tool and Resource Kit).

The Safer Health Care for Kids program is designed for physicians, allied health professionals, administrators, parents, and caregivers, who share a commitment to ensuring a safe health care environment for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
