Not Just for Boys: When Autism Spectrum Disorders Affect Girls - 0 views

  • An autism diagnosis is relatively rare in girls; Asperger's is even rarer. Boys outnumber girls with autism by 4 to 1; in "high functioning autism" and Asperger's, the gender ratio is estimated to be 10 to 1.1
  • For years autism was seen as primarily a male disorder, certainly not the only developmental disorder to affect more boys than girls. But some researchers are asking whether girls with ASD are going undiagnosed, especially those at the high-functioning end of the spectrum like June's daughter? Do girls simply do a better job masking their symptoms? Are their symptoms being missed by diagnostic tools that may be better suited to boys? As researcher John N. Constantino M.D. put it, are doctors looking at girls through "boy-colored glasses"?

    MEA-MFT PASS is an intensive four-day course, designed to help Montana paraprofessionals meet Federal qualification standards contained in the No Child Left Behind Act. The course has been developed by and for Montana paraprofessionals and provides participants with important skills in classroom management as well as proven strategies in reading, writing, and math instruction, taught in a dynamic and fun setting. A nationally developed assessment is built directly into the four-day course, assuring that paraprofessionals who take the course can demonstrate evidence of content mastery to their local districts and the state of Montana. Course materials are taken from the nationally recognized and award winning Educational Research and Dissemination (ER&D) program, developed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). A team of highly trained educators from throughout the state are responsible for teaching the course. Each trainer has received over 70 hours of ER&D training at the national level.

    Research shows that SUDEP takes the life of about one person per 1,000 people living with epilepsy per year. The greatest risk factor for SUDEP seems to be in those who have frequent seizures, especially generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures. This webinar will begin with a brief overview SUDEP and its possible causes. The presenters will then discuss what health care professionals, people living with epilepsy and they families can do to help reduce SUDEP risk. This will include a review various strategies including better education, the use of seizure monitoring devices, improved seizure medication management, and supervision. Participants will leave with the most current thinking on ways to reduce SUDEP risk. Plenty of time will be left to answer your questions at the end of the webinar.

Study Questions Early Intervention Eligibility Criteria - Disability Scoop - 0 views

  • Whether or not a child with developmental delays qualifies for early intervention varies dramatically from one state to the next, but often researchers say far more kids are eligible than can be served. The finding comes from a new study analyzing early intervention services across the nation. researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine examined each state’s eligibility requirements for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA, Part C program, which serves infants and toddlers with disabilities. Then they used data from a long-term government study tracking nearly 11,000 children to identify how many kids were likely to qualify or receive services in each state.

    The first presentation will feature Nic Dibble from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction who will share how Wisconsin is building on existing mental health initiatives to use a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework to help schools support students affected by trauma. Resources that will be shared include Wisconsin's toolkit for schools, links to publications and websites that describe how schools can become more trauma-informed, and specific strategies schools can adopt to be more trauma-sensitive. The second presentation will feature Erin Butts from the University of Montana Institute for Educational Research and Service who will discuss secondary traumatic stress (STS), burnout, and self-care. She will identify STS signs and symptoms, discuss their significance, and provide recommendations for self-care. Her presentation will include an interactive exercise that can be used during stressful situations.
