What: The iPad is revolutionizing the field of speech-language pathology and giving those who have been without a voice the ability to communicate their needs and desires. It is also an invaluable tool for teaching the special needs population. The 4-hour workshop will provide an overview of how the iPad can be used to enhance the communication skills of children with communication deficits and delays. After an initial introduction, participants will have the option to participate in a session involving hands-on training activities with the iPad or to learn more about specific iPad applications that address areas of communication needs (augmentative communication, language, social skills, articulation, auditory processing, engagement and reinforcement). Treatment videos will be used to enhance learning. The audience will leave feeling empowered to use the iPad in all settings -- at home, school, therapy, and in the community.

What: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is holding a series of Affordable Care Act implementation forums throughout the country. We encourage you all to attend these broad policy-focused meetings, as they present a valuable opportunity to insert the consumer voice into the implementation process. Although registration for the Washington, DC session has been closed due to space constraints, it will also be webcast.
HHS will use these forums to provide information to stakeholders on the Affordable Care Act implementation process. Additionally, they have promised ample time for Q&A, making these events a great opportunity to talk to key federal officials about pressing issues, such as:
How you would like to see open exchange policy decisions decided, either for Federally Facilitated and Partnership exchanges, or for unresolved state exchange issues that require federal guidance.
How HHS will engage with stakeholders, including consumer groups, in states that are pursuing Partnership or Federally Facilitated Exchanges (FFEs).
Input on additional information that HHS could provide to help your state define a comprehensive Essential Health Benefits package.

In this example video, I show how to use Automator and Speakable Items to launch three apps simply by saying "Good morning" to my iMac. Sure, it's not exactly a super-useful example, but can you imagine how powerful this can be to someone who doesn't have good motor skills or has other accessibility issues? Use your imagination and Automator to see how you can use the power of your voice to control your Mac.

On any given day, the feeds of my social media accounts are brimming with resources, stories, and motivation about disabled people: parenting tips, educational advice, how to work with someone who has a disability, etc. About us, but too often not including us. There are countless communities geared towards supporting parents, family members, and professionals, sharing words of encouragement on how to be the best advocates for the disability community. And while I understand such support networks are usually well intentioned, in many cases, they take the power out of the hands of the people who know themselves and their needs best: people who are actually disabled.
Don’t get me wrong – allies, or what I refer to as advocate-allies, are incredibly important to advocacy efforts. “Ally” implies being supportive, while “advocate-ally” paints a more accurate picture of people who join in along with self-advocates. And true advocate-allies deserve the utmost respect. But a real advocate-ally is someone who doesn’t overshadow the voices and efforts of the people who experience being disabled every single day.
Of course, as a disabled child is just beginning life, parents and professionals have a responsibility to play a key role as advocates. Obviously, a four-year-old wouldn’t be able to discuss medical procedures or know what kind of environmental access modifications are needed, so we can hope that parents will make sound and informed decisions on their child’s behalf. But as disabled children grow older, if they can communicate effectively in any way, then the primary goal should be to embrace the child’s form of communication, working with them to develop their own voice for advocacy.
It can become problematic if parents or professionals are reluctant to relinquish their positions of authority and move to the role of advocate-allies, advocating alongside, instead of on behalf of, disabled people. Therefore, as important as it is to step up as advocates, it’s more important to know when to step down.

What: Six parents participated in two semi-structured interviews about their child who has autism and has been using a Speech Generating Device (SGD) one year or longer. This webinar will focus on current research related to autism and SGDs, superordinate themes that emerged within the study, and possible/practical implications for practitioners. The presenter will explore the five themes that emerged through the interview process: the complexity of speech generating devices, tension between structure and play, interplay between requesting and social interaction, the fluctuating role of the parent advocate, and building a diverse support network. This qualitative dissertation expands the work of a pilot study.
Teens and young adults who suffer from mental illness can feel hopeless and alone. Many don't know what's wrong with them but feel like it's their fault. Those who understand what is happening fear they can't be helped. Because of the stigma attached to mental illness, it's often hard for those suffering and their families and friends to talk about what they're going through. But help is available, and it works.
The goal of OK2TALK is to create a community for teens and young adults struggling with mental health problems and encourage them to talk about what they're experiencing by sharing their personal stories of recovery, tragedy, struggle or hope. Anyone can add their voice by sharing creative content such as poetry, inspirational quotes, photos, videos, song lyrics and messages of support in a safe, moderated space. We hope this is the first step towards getting help and feeling better.
What: The Montana Office of Public Instruction is happy to announce that a series of DVD Video Conferences and other interpreter training materials from Boys Town and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) are now available to be checked-out by interpreters, teachers of the deaf and other people with interest in the education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
How to borrow the DVDs: The OPI library loans materials to other libraries and not to individual borrowers. To borrow the DVDs, please contact your local school or public library to request any of the titles below. The EIPA Video Conference series will be circulated as a set (4 DVDs) for each year. The interpreting series (2 DVDs) will be cataloged as elementary and secondary. Because OPI will be granting renewal credits and needs verification of circulation, the Resource Center will send a letter on OPI letterhead to the borrowing library with the DVD(s) verifying the DVD title(s) was checked out. The borrowing library will fill in the patron's name and give the letter to the patron with the loaned DVD(s). It will be the patron's responsibility to present the letter to OPI for Renewal Units (CEUs). The videos will be loaned on a "first-come, first-served" basis for a period of 2 weeks. Renewals after the two-week period will be granted if there is no waiting list.
Available DVD Titles:

\What:\ \ The iPad is revolutionizing the field of speech-language pathology and giving those who have been without a voice the ability to communicate their needs and desires. The audience will leave feeling empowered to use the iPad in all settings -- at home, school, therapy, and in the community.\

\What:\\ Six parents participated in two semi-structured interviews about their child who has autism and has been using a Speech Generating Device (SGD) one year or longer. This qualitative dissertation expands the work of a pilot study.\ \ \When:\\ Wednesday, September 18, 2013 \ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm Mountain\ \ \Cost:\\ $49.00 - Live Broadcast\
