MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A CBS News Correspondent opened up to NewsChannel 5 about what he calls his shameful secret. Byron Pitts, correspondent for CBS's "60 Minutes" has interviewed the past 6 presidents, dodged bullets in Afghanistan, and brought home dozens of journalism awards in his 30 years of reporting. But on Sunday, he was in Murfreesboro for a conference about literacy and reading. Pitts was standing as an unlikely poster child of illiteracy. "Nothing about where I come from suggests I should be doing what I am doing right now," said Pitts. For the first 12 years of his life, Pitts admitted he couldn't read.

BILLINGS - The victim of the crash on King Avenue West and South 29th Street Monday night is identified as Merry Jane Trewhella. She worked in the Education Department at MSU-Billings as a lecturer through 2008. MSU-B Director of University and Government Relations, Dan Carter, says Trewhella was a staunch supporter of students with special needs and special education. MSU-Billings issued the following statement: "She was a genuine person who always put students needs first. She will be missed by all who knew her."

Thanks to Hunt Of A Lifetime, a nonprofit organization that grants hunting and fishing adventures to children who have life-threatening illnesses, Daric had the chance last month to take his love of the great outdoors to Montana.

BILLINGS - Friends said Merry Jane Trewhella, 59, was a dedicated educator and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. They said the world really lost someone special.

Cerebral palsy limits Hans Smith’s control of his arms and legs, but thanks to a video game, Smith is living out his dream of playing baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. Last year Smith wrote to the creators of “MLB: The Show,” a PlayStation game which allows players to simulate the path of a professional baseball player as they work through the minor leagues and into the majors. In the letter, he thanked the creators for giving him an opportunity to participate in the sport he loves.

MICHAEL DUGGAN was overturning a table of trophies and jamming his hands into a celebratory cake at a sports banquet for disabled youths several years ago when he met Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The two hit it off. Now, the 19-year-old Roslindale man and his family are teaming up with key players in Boston City Hall to improve the lives of people with autism, a disorder that robs people like Michael of normal linguistic and social abilities.

The regulations apply to the activities of more than 80,000 units of state and local government and more than seven million places of public accommodation, including stores, restaurants, shopping malls, libraries, museums, sporting arenas, movie theaters, doctors’ and dentists’ offices, hotels, jails and prisons, polling places, and emergency preparedness shelters.

While many classrooms have evolved over the years to better work with students with disabilities, the school gym and athletic fields may be the exception. A 2010 report from the federal Government Accountability Office concluded as much, finding that "education has provided little information or guidance on PE or extracurricular athletics for students with disabilities, and some states and districts GAO interviewed said more would be useful."

On Monday night, the dads who gathered at the Mason sports bar were ready for some football. Oh, were they ready.

One said it had been three years since he had watched "Monday Night Football." Another said he hadn't allowed himself such an evening out in 13 years.Besides a fondness for football, the men shared another bond: They are fathers of children with autism.

Today State Representative Bill Wilson (D) of Great Falls sent a letter to the Montana Attorney General's Office, asking for a formal investigation into those disturbing allegations at North Middle School.

GREAT FALLS - West Elementary is one of 86 schools in Montana to serve free meals to all of their students under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. The program provides free breakfast and lunch to students that may otherwise go without.
