Eagle Mount hosts NARHA certification program for riding instructors - 0 views

  • BOZEMAN, MT - Teaching someone to ride a horse isn’t always a simple process. You can’t just hand them the reins, tell them to kick the horse to go, tug the reins to turn and pull back to stop. If the rider’s to have a safe, fun and educational experience, there’s more to the process, especially if the rider has special needs. And, while most riding instructors spend years honing their horsemanship and teaching skills, those working with special-needs riders must know other skills, such as various ways to safely mount riders onto the horse and volunteer management. When working with special-needs riders, there may be one to three volunteers per rider, one person leading the horse and a sidewalker on each side of the horse to provide rider support.

The Horse Boy Explores Whether Equine Companionship Can Help Treat Autism - WSJ.com - 0 views

  • Ask most parents how far they'd go for their child, and the usual answer is "to the ends of the earth." It's a turn of phrase that Rupert Isaacson and Kristin Neff took literally. "The Horse Boy," directed by Mr. Isaacson and Michel Orion Scott, and opening in New York on Sept. 30, is travelogue of sorts. In 2004, Mr. Isaacson and Ms. Neff's 2½-year-old son Rowan was diagnosed with autism, a neurological disorder now diagnosed in one out of every 150 children according to the Centers for Disease Control. As Rowan grew, he got worse, as autistics generally do: In homemade footage, Rowan is shown becoming a volatile child whose only place of peace, his parents find, is on a horse.

Click here to download the flyer with full information (PDF) What:
Alaina Buffalo Spirit began her journey as a self-taught artist in 2004. It was through the tragic loss of her only son that Alaina found solace in art. She was chosen as the 2010 Featured Artist of the Great Falls Indian Art Show in Great Falls, as well as a One-Woman Art Show at the Uprising Gallery in Bozeman in 2011. Most recently, Alaina was chosen to represent Montana by designing ornaments for the national Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. She chose the Chief Dull Knife College, representing the Northern Cheyenne nation, to work with the project. Ledger art derives from Plains Indian Biographic art, which recorded actual events important in the lives of individuals and groups, usually as naturalistic action scenes composed primarily of horses, humans, weapons, and tipis. When:
    Tuesday, April 17, 2012 | 5:00 - 7:00pm Mountain
    Ledger/Map Art from the 1870's
Based on a historical consciousness of awareness and the roles of Plains Indian warriors who were held as prisoners in Florida. Alaina, as a female artist, depicts images of women's roles in their daily lives during this same period. Thursday, May 3, 2012 | 5:00 - 7:00pm Mountain
    Ledger/Map Art Enhanced with Storytelling
Many stories are handed down through storytelling, as told by elders in Alaina's family. Many of the stories her grandparents shared have never been recorded nor written. Oral history is the natural process of teaching the young about the culture and traditions of the Cheyenne. Where:

Recovery from mental and substance use disorders is possible - Hungry Horse News: Hungr... - 0 views

  •
"All around us in Montana, there are hundreds of people in recovery from mental and substance use disorders. They are contributing to our businesses, connecting with their families and giving back to the community. Every day someone begins their journey of recovery. However, too many people are still unaware that prevention works, and that mental illness and substance abuse are conditions that can be treated, just like we can treat other health disorders such as diabetes and hypertension. We need to work together to make recovery the expectation, not the exception."

Carly's Voice - Changing the World of Autism, by Carly Fleischmann - 0 views

  • My name is Carly Fleischmann and as long as I can remember I’ve been diagnosed with autism. I am not able to talk out of my mouth, however I have found another way to communicate by spelling on my computer. (and yes that is me typing on the computer by myself) I used to think I was the only kid with autism who communicates by spelling but last year I met a group of kids that communicate the same way. In fact some are even faster at typing then I am. Last year a story about my life was shown on ABC news, CNN and CTV here in Canada. After my story was played I kept on getting lots of emails from moms, dads, kids and people from different countries asking me all sorts of questions about autism. I think people get a lot of their information from so-called experts but I think what happens is that experts can’t give an explanation to certain questions. How can you explain something you have not lived or if you don’t know what it’s like to have it? If a horse is sick, you don’t ask a fish what’s wrong with the horse. You go right to the horse’s mouth.
