Participants will learn about the various funding sources available that fund SGDs, as well as the report writing requirements for those funding sources. Please note this course covers national guidelines. State specific differences do exist, but will only be briefly covered here. Participants will also learn strategies for responding to deferrals or denials of SGD funding from the various funding sources.   • The National Institutes of Health has awarded $5.3 million in initial one-year funding to the latest two recipients of the Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE) program. With these awards, announced on World Autism Awareness Day, these and nine other ACE centers around the country are now being funded for up to five years. The program was created in 2007 to launch an intense and coordinated research effort aimed at identifying the causes of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and finding new treatments.

    The Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) in collaboration with the Department of Labor (DOL), Employment and Training Administration (ETA) is pleased to share information about the Disability Employment Initiative (DEI), which is jointly funded by the U.S. DOL ETA and the Office of Disability and Employment Policy. DOL has funded the DEI since 2010 to improve the education, training, and employment outcomes of youth and adults with disabilities who are unemployed, underemployed, and/or receiving Social Security disability benefits. The DEI supports extensive partnerships, collaboration, and service coordination across multiple workforce, generic, and disability systems in each state. The state vocational rehabilitation agencies are critical partners to all the DEI projects. This webinar will highlight activities from two high performing DEI projects-Delaware and Virginia-that focus on successful partnerships between the American Job Centers (formerly known as One-Stop Career Centers) and the vocational rehabilitation agencies to leverage resources to better serve persons with disabilities and improve their employment outcomes so that they can become economically self-sufficient.   • NEW YORK, NY (January 28, 2010) – Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, today announced the establishment of the Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program, which will provide eligible camps with funding to offer scholarships to campers with autism. The program, funded by Norma and Malcolm Baker, began in Southern California and will now expand to the national level. Camps providing a qualified summer camp program to individuals with autism are encouraged to apply for a Camp Scholarship Fund through the Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program. Applications will be accepted from now through March 1, 2010. Eligible camps will identify qualified campers who can demonstrate financial need and offer up to $5,000 in scholarship funds.

  • The local nonprofit D.R.E.A.M. (Down syndrome Research, Education and Advocacy in Montana) is pleased to announce the start of a new grant program to help people with Down syndrome and their families. D.R.E.A.M. was the vision of a few parents with children diagnosed with Down syndrome recognizing the need for a local support system. The success of the 1st annual Bozeman Buddy Walk held in September allowed D.R.E.A.M. to grow from a group that organized monthly support meetings into a nonprofit charity. Thanks to the wonderful community support at the Buddy Walk we are offering grants to families and individuals struggling with medical, therapy and equipment expenses associated with Down syndrome. Grant money will be available three times per year with deadlines for applications due January 5, May 5 and November 5.   • We are looking for examples of young people, age 18-30, in Montana who have a developmental disability according to the Montana definition and have creatively organized their supports to: Live in the community (on their own or with family or  friends) and/or Work in the community (including owning their own business) and/or Access inclusive education (high school, college, trade school, community classes) and/or Participate in recreation and leisure activities that are inclusive (that is, alongside people without disabilities) We want examples of supports that have been creatively organized around the person, individualized to their interests and needs.  These supports can be organized and managed by a funded adult agency or family and friends.  We are also looking for examples of creative funding such as blended services and natural supports, use of Social Security Administration work incentives, privately funded services or traded or bartered supports. Selected leaders will have their stories featured on the Montana Transition Listserv and in the annual Emerging Leader Showcase. They will also receive a monetary stipend for their time. To nominate yourself or someone you know as an Emerging Leader, visit the Rural Institute Transition Projects Website for a brief nomination form and a consent form.

    The Family Voices National Center for Family and Professional Partnerships is hosting this webinar presented by Suzanne M. Bronheim, PhD of Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development. Suzanne will share findings from a 2010 research partnership with three Family-to-Family Health Information Centers (F2F HICs) to better understand how Hispanic/Latino families' and African American families' utilization of F2F HICs might be increased. This research project is based on a social marketing theory that suggests that people try new things if that "innovation" fits with their values and experience, seems to have an advantage over other approaches, is easy to use, can be tried and dropped if they don't like it and if others they know and trust are also aware of it and have used it. The project has used this framework to study how Hispanic/Latino and African American families prefer to receive information and how they view the F2F HICs as a resource. In addition, this project has studied similar issues for the social networks of families to learn how they view and access F2F HICs. Suzanne will be joined by staff of the F2F HICs that partnered in this project to share lessons learned and suggestions of how other F2F HICs can use this framework.
