What:
Insurance Commissioner Monica J. Lindeen announced plans for a second public hearing on the proposed acquisition of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana (BCBS) by Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC). A previous hearing on February 12 gave the public an opportunity to weigh in on the proposal, which converts Montana's largest non-profit health insurer to a for-profit subsidiary of the nation's fourth largest health insurance company. Former Montana Supreme Court Justice W. William Leaphart will serve as the hearing examiner.

At the March 12 hearing, representatives from BCBS and HCSC will make their case that the proposed acquisition is in the public's interest and in compliance with state law. Both the Commissioner and the Attorney General will have an opportunity to call expert witnesses to evaluate the proposal.

ASL for beginners with opportunities for more experienced signers to improve their signing to make it more expressive. This class will be an introduction to the basic skills in production and comprehension of American Sign Language (ASL), including the manual alphabet and numbers.  Instruction will include developing conversational ability, culturally appropriate behaviors and exposure to ASL grammar. Resources for continuing to improve sign language skills will be provided.

MYLF (pronounced "my life") is a unique career and leadership training program for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with disabilities. By serving as delegates from their communities at a 5-day intensive training, youth with disabilities will cultivate leadership, citizenship, and social skills. Delegates gain access to vital resources related to assistive technology, community support, and self-advocacy. Successful men and women with disabilities serve as role models in helping youth realize their abilities and obligations to pursue meaningful employment and contribute to society. What: "Mystery in Helena" is a collaboration between local businesses and the Montana Youth Leadership Forum (MYLF) as MYLF hosts a "murder mystery" fund raising event. The event is an interactive mystery game, a scenario where the audience solves the murder of fictitious character "Wyatt Twerp." The Mystery takes place in 1878 in Dodge City, Kansas. Attendees will serve as detectives and encouraged to come in costume to fit the era. Prizes will be given for best costume, best detective, and other categories. There will be two offerings of the event during the day. Money raised will be used to sponsor youth to the 2014 Forum, purchase iPads, and create a promotional video that can recruit more youth to the program. When: Saturday, February 8, 2014 2:00 pm and again at 7:00 pm Mountain Where: Lewis & Clark Fairgrounds Entry Hall 98 W Custer Ave, Helena, Mt 59602 Cost: Tickets are $30.00 per person or two for $50.00. This workshop will teach participants about classroom interventions for students with anxiety- related and oppositional behaviors. Rather than respond with punishment- and reward- based consequences, it is important for educators to understand student challenges and teach them how to cope. What:
The signing exact english skillshops are for teachers, aides, parents, and others who use Signing Exact English and wish to improve their vocabulary, fluency, and expressive and receptive abilities. Participants review S.E.E. vocabulary and do extensive work on additional signs, visual features of sign language, song and story telling techniques.
The educational interpreting skillshops are for persons employed in elementary and secondary schools as educational interpreters, using any form of Signed English. Work is done on vocabulary expansion, fluency, fingerspelling, and expressiveness, practicing to a variety of timed tapes. Problem solving, discussion of interpreting ethics in the educational setting and how-do-you handle sessions also included.
