  • The national standard recommends a ratio of one registered, professional school nurse to every 750 students, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Nurses Association.Current 2012 data indicate that Montana has a ratio of 1 registered school nurse to 1,985 students, according to Montana Association of School Nurses’ April 2012 comprehensive study of school nursing services.

  • A child’s serious illness can cast a very long shadow across a family, often for years after the crisis has passed. A mother sat in our clinic recently, crying because her older child was having trouble in school. She blamed herself. A couple of years ago, her younger child had been very sick, and she felt she had been so consumed with worry — at the time and ever since — that she made mistakes parenting the older child. Behavioral and academic problems were the result, she insisted, and she would not be dissuaded.

This Issue Brief describes key unmet needs regarding a) developing chronic disease self-management skills; b) enhancing the capacity of the adult health care system to care for young adults with special health care needs; and c) reducing lapses in care during the transition period. The authors, fellows at the Stanford University Clinical Excellence Research Center, offer recommendations for improving the transition.

You may need help finding transportation to a medical visit or accessing therapy services near your home. You may want to find parent organizations or information about child care or insurance coverage. The resource search option lets you look for resources by topic. Most resources are in Washington, Alaska, Montana or Idaho but there are a few national resources available for other states.&nbsp; As you contact resources, make sure you are comfortable, know what you need, and find out about costs, their ability to work with you, within your budget or with your insurance plan.

  • But a growing concept in health care reform called the "medical home" offers parents a way to simplify, organize and coordinate the complexities of their medically fragile child's health care needs. The medical home is not a location but an approach to care coordination designed to provide a constant trusted source of care, typically by a general pediatrician.
