  • The U.S. Department of Education announced today that its Office for Civil Rights has entered into an agreement with Virtual Community School of Ohio to ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act for students with disabilities at the school. This first-of-its-kind resolution promises equal access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities in virtual charter schools. Virtual Community School of Ohio is an Internet-based, public charter school that serves approximately 1,200 students who reside throughout the state of Ohio. "Students with disabilities who attend online public charter schools are entitled to all the protections of the federal civil rights laws that their peers receive at traditional public schools, including the right to receive a free appropriate education. Online schools also must take steps to ensure that the websites and online classrooms they use to promote their services and to educate students are accessible to individuals with disabilities," said Catherine E. Lhamon, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights. "Online education environments such as this in which students reside across the state and go to school together in a totally on-line environment, may present unique challenges. Nevertheless, these online schools must comply with the civil rights laws. I commend Virtual Community School of Ohio for agreeing to address these issues as part of its agreement with OCR."

    The Montana Autism Education Project of the Office of Public Instruction is proud to present Rudy Simone in three presentations. Simone is the author of four books on Asperger syndrome, all best-sellers. Presentation on the following topics:

    Childhood, Adolescent and Adult Aspergers - This talk covers the traits and hallmarks of early childhood ASCs (autism spectrum conditions, incl. but not limited to Asperger Syndrome), adolescence and adulthood with some attention paid to how the same AS traits may manifest or be perceived differently in females.

    Relationships - This talk is tailored to suit the audience: whether they are mostly couples or simply individuals on the spectrum looking for relationship advice and assistance, professionals, friends and family members. Discusses the types of challenges spectrum people face throughout life when navigating friendships, dating, cohabitating, marriage, sex and children.

    Aspergers on the Job - This topic includes education and career and so is relevant for virtually all ages. Discusses how sensory, social, cognitive and physical challenges and strengths impact our work choices and experience. Positively focuses on training the talent, making the right educational and career choices, and managing challenges. Where/When:

But it's tough to say whether there will be much action on all that outdated legislation—including the No Child Left Behind Act, which has awaited reauthorization since 2007.   • This video illustrates how essential early childhood inclusion is for all children, including those who cannot be in close proximity to other children because of health concerns. In this video, Kate Mathany describes how her daughter Getty virtually attends a typical preschool classroom every day using a VGo. In the first part, Kate introduces us to Getty and describes how the idea to use the VGo came about. In the second part, Kate is joined by Eileen Sedilko, Getty's preschool teacher, as they illustrate how Getty's school day works from both home and classroom perspectives. They discuss a range of topics including preschool inclusion, parent leadership, the use of adaptations, collaboration, teamwork, the benefits of inclusion for all children, families, and teachers. This video has important messages for families with children who cannot attend a preschool because of health reasons who are looking for solutions, for all those interested in early childhood inclusion, and for current and future early childhood educators. A robot avatar now goes to classes and wanders school hallways for Lyndon, who had been forced to stay in isolation at his home in Knox City ever since his immune system was wiped out due to complications from kidney disease. The teen controls his avatar robot through the laptop on his desk at home, guiding it to classes and telling it to turn to face people when they speak to him.
