Étonnante péripétie que celle qui mit Ridley Scott aux commandes d'Alien, un film originellement prévu pour Walter Hill. Rétrospectivement, il s'agit pourtant du film qui lui assurera une stature internationale qui ne se dément toujours pas aujourd'hui, et ce malgré une carrière aux allures de montagnes russes. Alien, film de commande donc, est certainement l'un des sommets de celle-ci, et une opportunité pour tenter de discerner un style, des obsessions à un cinéaste qui deviendra par la suite bien moins lisible. Avec ce qui demeure la maîtresse-œuvre de Scott, Blade Runner, Alien va confronter l'homme et le divin, l'hubris de l'humain parvenu à l'apex de son évolution face à l'incompréhensible et finalement omnipotent mystère de sa propre insécurité.
