  • A tag is a mechanism from which information can be wirelessly shared; in the same way a QR code can be read by a scanner (NFC reader). 
  • In some stores there will be a combination of tags and tag readers – the Smartphone will contain a tag/reader combination, as it is capable of sharing information, so that a store can retrieve your name, contact information and so on (with your permission) and likewise you can read information from a tag
  • At the backend of the NFC application, there may be several other applications supported by a web-portal or, in fact, a link through to a social media platform – ‘Likes’ a ‘retweet’; ‘+1’ and so on.  Of course, adoption will be slow at first and there will also be the early adopters which, in turn, will fuel the greater purchasing community.

Part augmented reality-app and part social networking service, it lets people check and view locations along with additional random info like the place's history, the famous people who lived in it, anecdotes about the neighboring establishments, or any other information that can either be trivial, interesting, or extremely useful.

  • Alcatel-Lucent Geo-Location Mobile Game "Acquisition" On top of our platform and supported by our community members, Alcatel-Lucent ran an innovation & development challenge to bring new mobile applications and games to life. A TopCoder member came up with the idea for Acquisition, which leverages network-based API's for automated geo-checkin, SMS, subscriber identity, call control and player presence. It pairs it with game mechanics similar to a traditional game of Monopoly. In a game of Acquisition you are competing against a set of friends to amass the most wealth and you do so by physically checking into a variety of localities, trading properties, developing on top of owned properties, earning dividends and expanding your empire.

  • Siri is a game-changing technology: The thing knows how to translate the garble of human language into targeted API calls that subsequently pull out the correct information from a potentially ever-expanding set of databases (assuming that Apple one day integrates other databases into Siri, which I’m confident it will). The main thing standing between Siri and the best answer for our likely questions is that the database that contains these answers is still a work in progress.

  • Step 1: You need points.
  • But points are meaningless without a leader board.
  • Step 2: You need a leaderboard to get people’s competitive spirit out and allow them to compare and be compared against others.
  • Salesforce does the same with Nitro by gamifying real life. Sales guys get stats to see what they’re doing well, awards them with points and badges but it also lets them compare to others.
  • We can also use game mechanics to help people learn how to use our products – Richard mentions Ribbon Hero 2 where clippy teaches you how to use Microsoft Office products. Rather than having him jump up when it thinks you need help (as was the case back in the day) you have challenges to help clippy fix his CV, etc. Your userbase is having fun and you’re helping them learn about your product.

  • Rich doesn’t know that Foursquare should work but the beauty of it is that does. Rich thinks this has to do with velocity and the fact that it makes quite boring stuff exciting and PR worthy – not knowing when a reward is coming and the fact that they come almost at random is what Rich feels makes this work.
