Verizon Teams With Intuit to Bring GoPayment Mobile Card Reader to Retail Stores [25Aug11] - 0 views

  • Verizon Wireless and financial management company Intuit announced today a partnership that will bring Intuit's mobile card reader to 2,300 Verizon retails stores across the country. The partnership is yet another big move in the mobile card reader industry that has been popularized by Square and includes Verifone, Erply and PayAnywhere among others. Intuit operates QuickBooks, a system used by merchants to manage finances. As such, GoPayment fits well in Intuit's product line. Verizon will be able to put the Go Payment in front of millions of people looking for mobile payment options. It is a win for both companies and a strike to Square, which is putting up a big fight against the large financial companies that are rapidly entering mobile payment industry.
  • The GoPayment card reader will be "free" to Verizon customers granted activation of a GoPayment account and a mail-in rebate of the $29.97 purchase price. The app itself is free and has no monthly transaction or cancellation fees with a 2.7% rate for each swiped transaction. A paid version of GoPayment is available that lowers the per swipe transaction rate to 1.7% with a $12.95 monthly fee, which will be good for retailers with high volume.

Social network NFC tag scans increasing 22% per month [13Sep11] - 0 views

  • NFC tag scans for connection sharing, social networking and marketing are increasing at a rate of 22 per cent per month, according to new research carried out by Kimtag. Kimtag, a UK based connection hub, analysed the visits to 10,000 selected Kimtag connection pages over a six month period ending in August 2011. The company compared QR Code, NFC tag, direct and referral hits from visitors around the world. 
  • During the research, Kimtag regarded a successful visit as a user reaching and fully downloading a Kimtag connection page via an address assigned specifically for NFC tags and then subsequently visiting a connection such as a social network or website.  The research revealed that the number NFC tag scans grew by an average 22 per cent month on month. Over the whole six month period, NFC scans increased by over 170 per cent.
  • Phil Coote, Kimtag’s CEO, commented, "The research illustrates that while a lot of the current focus within the NFC industry has been on payment systems, the use of NFC to empower the new ‘internet of things’ is likely to play an equally important role in it’s growth."

Qualcomm's Jacobs pushes Internet of Things [14Sep11] - 0 views

  • Qualcomm boss Paul Jacobs has outlined his vision of the future at the company's Innovation event: a world where mobile devices supplant PCs, with his company's chips at the heart of the ecosystem.
  • "The fundamental trend that we all know is that mobile is now the dominant computing platform," Jacobs told attendees. "That's not the future - that's now. The install base of smartphones has already surpassed PCs."

  • The vision Jacobs espoused wasn't purely about mobile devices, however, but about the Internet of Things - or, as he terms it, the Internet of Everything. "It's possible that there will be a sea of sensors," he claimed, "and these will all be connected. Is that possible - a thousand radios per person? I don't know," he admitted.
  • "Four out of five mobile connections are in emerging markets," he claimed, "and in many cases it will be the only computing device that they have."
  • It's a project that has far-reaching implications - into retail, gaming, social networking, and healthcare - and one that Qualcomm isn't afraid to open up to its competitors.

  • A research team at the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden has come up with a new optical amplifier that can help boost the efficiency of backhaul optical networks, a move that could have a big impact on the overall economics of bandwidth.
  • Chalmers’ new breakthrough is more efficient and allows optical signals to be sent over longer distances 4,000 kilometers as opposed to 1,000 kilometers – which in turn would make the cost of building and operating the networks cheaper.

  • The majority of Canadians would be happy with a cash-free future using digital forms of payment instead of carrying currency, according to a new PayPal Canada survey.
  • Leger Marketing polled 1,512 Canadian adults online and found 56% would prefer using a digital wallet.

  • The idea of a making payments via your mobile has been a slow adoption in Canada, mainly due to the lack of devices with NFC capabilities. A report last week noted that 10% of Canadians currently use a “mobile wallet” to pay for select items and bank via their cellphone, but 40% are interested in using it in the “future”. The Big 3 carriers (Rogers, Bell and TELUS) joined together to create Zoompass, Visa and MasterCard are conducting trials and a mobile payment trial is underway in Montreal called “MoneyCell”. So the ability to pay by your phone will become second nature over the next year to two years in Canada. PayPal Canada recently hired Leger Marketing to conduct a survey to see how comfortable Canadians were with the idea of a “digital wallet”. PayPal noted that they have “always provided digital wallet functionality” and 1,512 Canadians took the online survey between May 9th – May 12th. The survey revealed that 34% would rather carry a mobile phone to make a payment than a pocket full of change. 36% stated they would make mobile payments that range in all price points, such as an iPod ($272.30) or a latte ($5.50). 38% believe that paying from a mobile device is more convenient.

  • Their solution to competing with their larger (more supermarkets) competitor was to create virtual stores using large wall spaces in subway stations that are full-size photos of their supermarket products. Customers use thei smartphones to scan QRcodes to a virtual shopping cart. Once the order is complete, the items are delivered directly to them after they arrive at their homes. Homeplus: Virtual Subway Store (WeLoveViral) More than ten thousand customers visited the online store using their smartphones. New registered members rose by 76% and online sales rose 130%. This marketing and sales technique increased their sales without increasing retail store space. And, it made shopping more convenient for busy people. Ultrasound Technology Offers Omnipresent Alternative to NFC [22Jun11] - 1 views

  • Zoosh is a new technology that brings NFC-like payments to any phone with a speaker — i.e. every smartphone on the market.
  • Using the almost-inaudible 20,000KHz range — which almost every cell phone speaker is capable of — Zoosh technology can then send data to a receiving microphone. The end point can either be a point of sale — a shop, a ticket machine — or it can be another mobile phone. Apparently the technology has been successfully used in noisy environments — and it’s also fairly safe to assume that a technology like Zoosh would be designed to incorporate as much redundancy and error checking as possible.
  • Narrate, the company behind Zoosh, envisions two main use cases for its ultrasonic payment system. The first is just like Google Wallet: for $30 — a third of the price of NFC hardware — Narrate says that points of sale can be upgraded to accept Zoosh payments.

  • canning that mysterious QR code sticker that someone stuck on the wall in a tame but oh-so-technophilic act of modern vandalism.
  • Instead, the nasties are using QR codes to lure people into downloading Android malware. While some users are likely to assume that QR codes are unique to the Android market and thus be comfortable scanning them, these codes actually take you to an Android install package hosted on some third-party server. The QR code itself isn’t bad — but the link it’s obfuscating is.
  • Once downloaded, the dirty app (which, in the most recent case, was a hacked version of the Russian ICQ client, Jimm) begins firing off text messages to a premium number.   • It’s not hard to imagine how this concept could get nasty quick. Users, for the most part, would trust a QR code the same way they just a link on a company’s own website. Take a QR-enabled ad on a public wall, for example; how simple would it be for the “hacker” to simply slap a sticker of his nefarious QR code on top of yours? Would anyone notice?

What Could Wal-Mart Do With Square Mobile Credit Card Readers? [Updated] [24Oct11] - 0 views

  • Square has struck a deal with Wal-Mart that will bring the dongle into retail stores across the country.
  • In theory, Wal-Mart could arm all of the floor representatives with Square dongles and have customers in and out. It may even help alleviate long lines at the checkout.

  • It could just be a little booth in every department of a Wal-Mart that would be designed to handle payments for a couple of items.
  • One of the biggest benefits for Square could be to get Wal-Mart to leverage its existing Card Case program that allows for simple payments and transaction information between the customer, the retailer and the payments platform. The Square Card Case was unveiled in May and initially only rolled out to five cities and 50 retail partners.
  • Square posits the Card Case as an Amazon-style "one-click buying" method, except in the real-world as opposed to digital payments.
  • Users that download the app can set up a "card" from a retailer and see what is happening with the retailer, from new deals to changes in the menu. Wal-Mart could institute the Card Case in a variety of ways, from the national level for what is happening with all Wal-Mart retail stores, to dedicating local managers to updating the card case for each individual store.
  • In terms of that goal, the Wal-Mart adoption may have the affect of a giant marketing campaign. The greatest benefit to Square from Wal-Mart may not be actual transaction revenue, but helping to speed up the awareness and adoption of the platform.

The Internet in Africa - still an alien concept - 0 views

  • With the excitement surrounding the arrival of undersea cables in Sub-Saharan Africa and the prospects of the smartphone revolution in bringing mobile connectivity to most parts of the continent, it is easy to forget for instance that the continent still has 1 domain per 10,000 users.
  • In education, there are the vast prospects that e-learning provides for students, but doing this in a way that scales is difficult in Africa’s low bandwidth environment. There are also prospects in various sectors ranging from agriculture to finance each with its own unique set of challenges.
  • Amidst this backdrop, the obvious respite for bridging the access gap appears to be through smart phones. However, majority of Africans can only afford the cheapest of phones which are typically low end phones. To truly expand access, smart phone prices will need to crash drastically and rural connectivity would need to expand dramatically. Save for these two actions, revolutionizing the continent via the Internet will continue to remain a pipe dream.

Well, Crowdpark is aiming to give gamers their fix of legal gambling, er, betting. Unlike its social gaming competitors, the German startup allows gamers to compete against each other in betting events using virtual currency.   • Last week, video eyewear maker Vuzix announced (pdf) that it has partnered with cell phone maker Nokia to produce the next generation of see-through near-eye display (NED) glasses. The glasses will use Exit Pupil Expanding (EPE) optics technology developed by both Vuzix and Nokia.Vuzix, which has been developing display technologies for the military since 1997, credits itself with creating the consumer video eyewear market, which it did in 2005 with the release of the V920 glasses.

Japan's NEC Unveils Hi-Tech Spectacles - NTDTV.com [13Nov09] - 0 views

  • Computer-maker NEC calls them the latest in eyewear for the linguistically challenged. The TeleScouter integrates spectacle frames with a personal mini-computer and a head-mounted display unit. The result is a portable language translator. TeleScouter allows two or more people with no language in common, to hold a conversation. One user will begin the conversation in their native language and, with the press of a button send the recorded words to a remote server where they are analyzed and translated. The server then sends the translation to the receiving user who can read the words in their own language on the head-mounted display unit. While the technology is still in its developmental stages, NEC says a faster unit is on the horizon and that the hope is to break down language barriers. [Kotaro Nagahama, NEC Manager]: "With this you don't have to think about having to translate yourself your own words. All you have to do is speak in your own words and that gets communicated to the other person and you don't have to do any thinking. You just have you use your own language. " But TeleScouter will not be cheap. When it reaches the market it'll sell for around $83,000 although the price will come down over time. If all goes according to plan, NEC says foreign tourists will one day, with great confidence be able to tell their hosts "I see what you're saying."
