"Technology is woven into every aspect of our lives, and education is no exception. With the belief that technology can make a substantial impact on schools and students, three research organizations - The Greaves Group, The Hayes Connection and One-to-One Institute - established Project RED: Revolutionizing Education. Initially these organizations conducted a national survey of technology programs in 1,000 schools, which is the first and only national research focusing on academic results and the financial implication of education technology. The findings showed that if effectively implemented, technology programs can lead to improved student achievement and significant return on investment."

A company known for helping clients in the media and retail sectors digitize their publications has launched a version of its publishing platform for converting PDF-based books into interactive texts that can be accessed on multiple platforms for the education segment. YUDU Media has launched YUDU Education, which allows publishers to create course materials that can be optimized and delivered for Macs, Windows-based PCs, and Android and iPad tablets. The same technology can also simultaneously create an accessible edition of the same materials for users who use assistive technologies. In this six-part series, I will highlight apps useful for developing higher order thinking skills in grades K-5 classrooms. Each list will highlight a few apps that connect to the various stages on Bloom's continuum of learning. Given the size and current exponential growth of the app market, I will also assist educators in setting criteria necessary to identify apps that maintain the integrity of teaching for thinking.

Zygote offers manipulable, three-dimensional, anatomical models of the male and female human bodies. This site is gorgeous. It's a singular page with either a female or male model, but those models are so beautifully rendered that users don't realize that they're only looking at a single page. Organs and entire systems jump off the screen when revealed. The attention to detail is impressive once users get passed the initial, clothed version of the models. (Because they will encounter only under-the-skin views of body parts, kids in grades six and up should be able zygote bodyto avoid inappropriate distractions while exploring this site.)

The Learning Network is a blog-style website that features New York Times news content for teacher use. Great features include a word of the day, a fill-in-the-blanks news story activity, a visual thinking activity that poses an image with questions of inference and comprehension, and even the Six Questions, which regularly use embedded video and audio.

A Christmas Carol is probably best known now as a story exploited by Hollywood repeatedly in straight adaptations (Disney's included) and altered versions such as the Bill Murray comedy Scrooged. Regardless of how it is now known it is certainly well known, and its anti-hero Scrooge represents curmudgeonly and stingy attitudes outside the context of the book. It was published a Christmas book in 1843 and is quite a simple tale but successful for that reason. Scrooge is avaricious, misanthropic and heartless, showing no feeling for the Christmas spirit After he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Marley, he sees visions of his past, present and future that inspire him to become a zealously kind and amiable individual who sends a turkey to his clerk Bob Cratchit and gives to Christmas charities generously. It is a somewhat saccharine tale and is not one of Dickens' finer works but the story itself is heartening and is a proposed alternative to the grim and stern Puritan values of the Victorian age.
