Research Webinar - Designing Effective AAC Technologies for Beginning Communicators - A... - 2 views

  •
"To date, there are few guidelines to support clinicians and manufacturers in the design of effective AAC systems for beginning communicators. When AAC systems are well designed, they may enhance communication and language outcomes for beginning communicators with complex communication needs. However, poorly-designed AAC systems may potentially interfere with language learning and communication effectiveness. In this session, we will discuss guidelines for the design of effective AAC technologies for beginning communicators with complex communication needs, including infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with developmental disabilities (e.g., autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome) as well as older individuals with significant cognitive impairments. The session will present research results from recent studies and will suggest clinical guidelines to improve the design of AAC systems based on these research results. "

Kidtools.missouri.edu - About KTSS Programs - 1 views

  •
"KidTools and KidSkills are new kinds of software to help students take control of their learning, behavior, and problem solving to improve success in school. The tools are research-based and have undergone extensive testing with actual students in classroom settings. These software programs include a library of tools provided as easy-to-use templates for children to personalize and use independently in school and other settings. There are two levels of tools in each of these programs. eKidTools and eKidSkills are made for elementary students with some reading abilities, ages 7-10. Within eKidTools, there is a set of PictureTools made for preschool/primary children that do not require reading abilities. iKidTools and iKidSkills are made for intermediate/middle school students with reading abilities, ages 11-14. Because these tools are all related, children can move up and down the levels to use the tools that best fit their skills and needs. "

Hope Technology School - Introduction - 1 views

  •
"We began with a parent's vision of an inclusive community for families with and without disabilities. The hope was to use technology, particularly computers, to include individuals with special needs and their typically developing peers into one classroom environment. In 2001 a fully inclusive Hope Technology School was established. Now in our tenth year, serving over 120 students, Hope Technology School has become a preschool-through-eighth-grade program including an onsite, NPA-certified Therapy Department, Vocational Education Program, and Assistive Technology (AT) Lab in Palo Alto, California. Our school includes students who are typically developing as well as students with special needs such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, dyslexia, and other learning differences. "

Interacting with Autism - 1 views

  •
"JASPER (Joint Attention Symbolic Play Engagement Regulation) is a treatment approach based on a combination of developmental and behavioral principles developed by Dr. Connie Kasari at the Center for Autism Research and Treatment, at University of California, Los Angeles. This intervention model targets the foundations of social-communication (joint attention, imitation, play), uses naturalistic strategies to increase the rate and complexity of social-communication, and includes parents and teachers as implementers of the intervention to promote generalization across settings and activities and to ensure maintenance over time. Dr. Kasari and her colleagues have tested this approach in a series of target and modularized research studies. In the first randomized controlled trial, 58 preschool children with autism were recruited from an early intervention program based on applied behavior analysis, and were taught joint attention and play skills. This study showed promising evidence that a child-centered treatment focused on early social-communication deficits of joint attention and play could lead to improvements in these core deficits while also increasing the child's use of language (Kasari et al, 2006, 2008, 2012) over a 5 year span. Researchers are continuing to test the use of JASPER with children of various ages (infants to school-aged) and across various settings (clinic, home and schools)."

Engaging Autism: Developmental Implications for Early Intervention - UCTV - University ... - 1 views

  •
"Early interventions for autism are increasingly focused on early core developmental abilities. These include a focus on shared attention and affect, joint attention and social motivation to interact with others. Strong theoretical and empirical evidence documents how early learning is facilitated by interactions with others. In this presentation, Dr. Kasari will address targeted interventions for these important core developmental abilities, and how early interventions generate change in the short term and create a platform for later developmental growth. She will also illustrate these changes through our intervention research with toddlers, preschoolers, and school aged children with a particular focus on underserved, under-resourced children with ASD and their families. Chapel Hill Snippets: Big Pumpkin----Great book, printable icons - 0 views

  •
"This book, Big Pumpkin, by Erica Silverman, has everything from funny characters and plot, to repeatable lines, to a vivid setting. In addition, there is a YouTube video that is the audiobook portion (no animation so you need the real book) for kids to follow along---the lines are sung in a catchy tune, with turn the page signals. As usual, I've been a bit busy with Boardmaker (getting the original idea from Boardmaker Share) and have a few visuals to be used, and along with a bigger written word ("Drat") which is to be laminated and mounted on a stick.
