Glenda's A.T. Information and more...: iPhones and iPodTouch - 1 views

  •
"iPhones and iPodTouch We all see those great advertisements about iPhone "apps", what you might not realize though is how wonderful the iPhone can be for people with various challenges. Much of the attractiveness of the iPhone and iPod apps, available for children and teens who benefit from options in communication and organization, is that everyone is so familiar with them or willing to learn more about them due to their awesome appeal, popularity and tech culture status. They are the in thing! What you may not know is that parents, Speech and Language Specialist and teachers have begun developing programs specifically for the disabled population. Some may not be designed for the disabled but have become a great tool for them anyway! This is not a complete listing, I am sure, but it is a beginning. I will try to keep it up-dated. Please let me know if I miss something! Remember also that you do not have to have a phone as part of your system as you can download, purchase and use the same (most anyway) "apps" by using an iPodTouch. "

"Path Input is a quick, smart and fun input solution on iPhone and iPod touch. Its distinctive features are as followed: ★★★★ Path Input Keyboard ★★★★ Input a word by drawing its path on the keyboard. For example, to input the word "book", you can touch down your finger at key 'B', move to key 'O', then to key 'K' and lift up your finger. This input mode can tolerate the error. In the above case, if you lift up your finger at key 'L', you can also get the word "book" since "bol", "bool" or "boll" is not meaningful or common English word."

Ruben R. Puentedura's Weblog: The Lively Sketchbook - 1 views

  •
"I therefore set out to see whether the iPhone could function as a "lively sketchbook" - one that could provide a rich set of tools for analysis and creation across a broad range of scenarios throughout K-20 education. After a couple of months of testing multiple apps in combination with each other, I found that this was indeed possible. The question in selecting any given iPhone app is not whether it has all the features of its desktop counterpart - that way lies interface madness. Rather, the question is whether the app is designed in such a way that it functions in notebook/sketchbook-like fashion, with the same grace and ease of use that one might expect from its paper-based counterpart."

With MyTalk, you can easily create personal communication boards for both education and everyday use. From "My name is Michael" to "I would like to order a Big Mac," MyTalk enables those with expressive language challenges to share their likes, dislikes, desires and needs in common social settings via commonly accepted devices. While traditional AAC aids can enhance rather than reduce social stigma, children, teens and adults alike will be eager to engage with others via their iPhone and iPod touch devices. "

iPad. In the Home. At Work. In School? - 0 views

"With Apple always being ahead of the game in music, movies and other entertainment, it is interesting to see the effect they now have in the educational field. On Wednesday, Apple fans were hanging off the edge of their seats as they witnessed the revealing of the new tablet computer, the iPad. This Wi-Fi enabled device has 10 hours of battery life on its 9.7-inch screen, weighing in at only 1.5 pounds. It uses the iPhone operating system so education companies that have iPhone apps can now make the same information available on the iPad."
