"The Advisory Commission on Accessible Instructional Materials in Postsecondary Education for Students with Disabilities, established by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, has brought together government leaders, representatives from the publishing industry, individuals with print disabilities, representatives from two-year and four-year institutions of higher education and leaders in accessible technology. The Commission will study the current state of accessible materials for students with disabilities in postsecondary education and make recommendations to the U.S. Congress for improving access to and the distribution of instructional materials in accessible formats. This is the first commission in history charged with examining accessible instructional materials for postsecondary students with disabilities. "

"The purpose of the Making Cognitive Connections (formerly PDA 4 Memory) project is to provide training materials for individuals living with brain injuries and other cognitive challenges. Training relates to the use of a smart mobile device (such as a iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Android device) as a memory and cognitive prosthetic device. The training materials include books, videos, and quick reference guides designed with the specific needs of those living with brain injury and other cognitive challenges in mind."

The purpose of the review was to identify the extent to which product developers or publishers offered readily discoverable and publicly available information about product accessibility. Using the Section 508 standards for physical and sensory access as a benchmark, the Center has color coded products green, yellow, or red. "

It is necessary to provide these students with ways to communicate so that they can answer academic questions and participate in the social communication of the schools. Use of core vocabulary can help make this happen. Core vocabulary is defined as a small set of unchanging words that are used across contexts. Core vocabulary is a fundamental concept and is a way of designing low and high tech materials that maximize and enhance student communication and language learning while minimizing the work load of supplying these materials. "

"The National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) is a project led by five centers and 24 states, building an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS) for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The shared goal of the NCSC partners is to ensure that students with the most significant cognitive disabilities achieve increasingly higher academic outcomes and leave high school ready for post-secondary options. The wiki and the materials hosted here help educators accomplish the NCSC goals by supporting instruction aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The materials on the wiki can also be used in states that are not using the CCSS. Much of the content that is covered on the wiki will also appear in other Mathematics and English Language Arts state standards."

CAST today announced the release of UDL Studio, a free web-based tool that enables anyone to author and publish educational materials that use the universal design for learning framework to flexibly respond to the needs of all learners.
