'This Stuff Doesn't Change the World': Disability and Steve Jobs' Legacy | Ep... - 1 views

  •
Another good accessibility post about Steve Jobs "When I heard that Steve Jobs had passed away, I was boarding a train from New York to Philadelphia to visit my son. A friend phoned and then text-messaged me the news before I could read it on Twitter. It felt, I said later, as if someone had torn the hair out of my head. When I did tweet, the first semi-coherent thought I was able to write about Jobs was also about my son: I'm on my way to PHL to see my son, who uses a device Steve Jobs invented to help him talk. He will never know. He will never know."

"JobTIPS is a free program designed to help individuals with disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder explore career interests, seek and obtain employment, and successfully maintain employment. JobTIPS addresses the social and behavioral differences that might make identifying, obtaining, and keeping a job more difficult for you. Though JobTIPS is designed for direct use by individuals with autism and other disabilities, this program (including all of the printables, assessments, and videos) is also suitable for delivery by teachers, family members, clinicians, mentors, and job coaches."

Stevie Wonder sings Steve Jobs' praises for iOS accessibility - The Next Web - 0 views

  •
"Steve Jobs has been lauded for making the smartphone truly accessible for everyone, incorporating subtle features that help the visually impaired or those with disabilies operate Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod devices. Last weekend, Stevie Wonder made a special appearance at a nightclub in Los Angeles, ad-libbing to his songs, playing some other tracks but also taking some time to stop the music to give a speech on helping others with disabilities."

Glenda's Assistive Technology Information and more...: Augmentative Alternative Communi... - 2 views

"Communication applications (apps), designed to be used on an iPhone, iTouch or iPad (iDevices), fit different cognitive and learning profiles just like all programs and devices do. Today, most people use multiple devices to address their daily communication needs. The idea that ANY one device can (or should) "do the job" for individuals with communication needs no longer makes sense. "

Just Books Read Aloud - 5 views

  •
This site is JUST books read aloud by normal (but enthusiastic) readers. There are no advertisements or other revenue generating opportunities on the site. Children can't navigate away from the site and follow other youtube leads. There are only children's books on the site. The videos only show the books versus seeing the reader, which I think distracts from the book. Animation on the site is limited to nice editing jobs that zoom to parts of the page. The books are frequently reordered to encourage listening to new books.

"Offline speech recognizer for chrome. This app uses the new built in speech feature in chrome 11+ to create a useful powerful tool to use voice to do the normal typing jobs . The app is essentially an in the browser speech recognizer using which you can dictate sentences , edit the output and add them together to form paragraphs. "

Backwards EdTech Flow Chart | Talk Tech With Me - 1 views

"I truly believe technology enhances the classroom, but I never think it should be used just for the sake of using it. This is another visual I created to help teachers select the right technology tool for the job. I hope it helps you think backwards (or rather the "right" way) to think about selecting a technology tool to use in your class. It starts by asking what you want students to do, and then you pick a goal, such as explain a concept. Follow the diagram until you either reach a list of tech tools to help you or your students complete this task or you reach a prompting question, such as "do you need them to do this verbally?" Based on your yes or no answer, you'll finally come to a list of edtech tools."

"t IPAT, one of my jobs is to provide information on AAC devices and apps, and I was having a hard time keeping track of prices, platforms, and features and how they compare to each other and Proloquo2Go. So I decided to create a comparison matrix for myself and others to ferret out the information to help make better AAC choices. All info was obtained from the manufacturers websites and interaction with the apps here in my office."

SpeEdChange: Universal Design for your school computers - 2 views

"I asked, "What are the differences between the approaches at Grand Valley and Stanford, and those at California and Ohio State?" (oops, I'm sorry, "THE Ohio State"). And I asked, "Which school is doing the best job?" I'll leave that question for all of you... but I will suggest that there is a vast difference between providing accessible computing in one place and providing it wherever all other students can access computing. A very big difference."

WebToolboxes - home - 1 views

"Just as a carpenter needs to locate and use the correct tool for the job, teachers need to select technology tools to assist all learners in the classroom. Many tools can also assist in providing Tier 1 differentiated instruction for all learners and Universal Design for Learning. Use this wiki to learn about Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Response to Intervention (RTI), free web tools and assistive technology (AT). Each set of "tools" might not be all encompassing. Continuing the carpenter analogy, every tool available is not necessary in order to complete a successful project. In addition some manual tools (non-technology) might be better than power tools (technology tools) for some projects. Teachers can fill their own toolbox with specialized tools to make learning more effective and efficient for all all students."
