The Crader Family Book Prize recognizes a first book, which best exemplifies the values of the Crader Family Endowment for American Values: individual liberty, constitutional principles and civic virtue. The field and subject matter are open to any area of US, European or Latin American history, but must examine the historical development of the political, religious and economic heritage of Western Civilization, or events directly related to them. The prize includes an honorarium of $1,000.

The Ellis W. Hawley Prize is given annually by the Organization of American Historians to the author of the best book-length historical study of the political economy, politics, or institutions of the United States, in its domestic or international affairs, from the Civil War to the present. The prize honors Ellis W. Hawley, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Iowa, an outstanding historian of these subjects. Eligible works shall include book-length historical studies, written in English. Each entry must be published during the period January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013. The prize will be presented at the 2014 OAH Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, April 10-13.

The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research in the John W. Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months. Established in 2000 through an endowment of $60 million from John W. Kluge, the Center is located in the splendid Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. The Kluge Center furnishes attractive work and discussion space for Kluge Chair holders, for distinguished visiting scholars, and for post-doctoral Fellows supported by other private foundation gifts. Residents have easy access to the Library's specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-lingual research is particularly welcome. Among the collections available to researchers are the world's largest law library and outstanding multi-lingual collections of books and periodicals. Deep special collections of manuscripts, maps, music, films, recorded sound, prints and photographs are also available. The Fellowship Program for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan is a joint activity of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Awards support research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan's international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in wider regional and global contexts and is comparative and contemporary in nature. Research should contribute to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of issues of concern to Japan and the United States. Appropriate disciplines for the research include anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, linguistics, political science, psychology, public administration, and sociology. Awards usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources.

The Smith Richardson Foundation seeks to contribute to important public debates and address serious public policy challenges facing the United States, as well as ensure the vitality of its social, economic, and governmental institutions and promote the development of effective policies that help it compete internationally and advance its interests and values abroad. To that end, the foundation is currently accepting applications to its annual Strategy and Policy Fellows grant competition. At least three research grants of $60,000 will be awarded to help young scholars and thinkers on American foreign policy, international relations and security, or diplomatic and military history in support of efforts to conduct research and write a book. 

The Smith Richardson Foundation seeks to contribute to important public debates and address serious public policy challenges facing the United States, as well as ensure the vitality of its social, economic, and governmental institutions and promote the development of effective policies that help it compete internationally and advance its interests and values abroad. To that end, the foundation is currently accepting applications to its annual Strategy and Policy Fellows grant competition. At least three research grants of $60,000 will be awarded to help young scholars and thinkers on American foreign policy, international relations and security, or diplomatic and military history in support of efforts to conduct research and write a book.  To be eligible, applicants must have a PhD; be a junior or adjunct faculty, research associate, or post-doc or be employed at an affiliate of an academic institution; or be a policy thinker employed at an affiliate of a think tank.

The Nathan Cummings Foundation (NCF) Fellowship awards three individuals with up to $150,000 to turn an inspired idea in the field of social justice into a reality. The program is designed for emergent leaders who have limited access to institutional philanthropy and whose work is traditionally underfunded. NCF welcomes a diverse pool of applicants representing practitioners in a variety of fields. Applicants should demonstrate a deep understanding and clear analysis of the field in which they work. They should also have a history of success in this field but still be positioned to benefit from the Foundation' support. The topic of a Fellow's project should generally align with the Foundation's focus on climate change and inequality. It should aim to transform the systems and mindsets that hinder progress toward a more sustainable and equitable future for all people, particularly women and people of color. The Foundation is also interested in innovative approaches that cut across these areas. Applicants should have a clear idea of the project's goal(s), audience, and impact on community. They should also demonstrate an understanding of the timeline and resources needed to execute their work. Proposed projects might include the creation of a product such as a book or report; a public hearing or presentation; a launch of an initiative or nonprofit organization; an art piece; or other creative work products.

Mission Strengthen democracy by making independent voices heard. Description In his book The Media Monopoly Ben Bagdikian writes, "The object of reform is not to silence voices but to multiply them, not to foreclose ideas but to awaken them." Without a strong and diverse community of independent voices, we cannot build a global democracy much less protect our own. The goal of independent media is not to comfort or sell but to inspire and mobilize. It currently serves what Howard Zinn calls the "unreported resistance," the "permanent adversarial culture" - but its real ambition is to give voice to the world's silent majority.

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation awards grants of up to $2,200 each in support of research in the archival collections of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, part of the system of Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.  The collections are rich on U.S. government domestic policies, diplomacy, and national political affairs in the 1970s.  A grant helps defray the travel and living expenses of a research trip to the Ford Library.
