The Sociology Program supports basic research on all forms of human social organization -- societies, institutions, groups and demography -- and processes of individual and institutional change. The Program encourages theoretically focused empirical investigations aimed at improving the explanation of fundamental social processes. Included is research on organizations and organizational behavior, population dynamics, social movements, social groups, labor force participation, stratification and mobility, family, social networks, socialization, gender roles, and the sociology of science and technology. The Program supports both original data collections and secondary data analysis that use the full range of quantitative and qualitative methodological tools. Theoretically grounded projects that offer methodological innovations and improvements for data collection and analysis are also welcomed. As part of its effort to encourage and support projects that explicitly integrate education and basic research, the Sociology Program provides support to improve the conduct of doctoral dissertation projects undertaken by doctoral students enrolled in U.S. universities when the dissertation research is conducted in a scientifically sound manner and it offers strong potential for enhancing more general scientific knowledge. The Sociology Program funds doctoral dissertation research to defray direct costs associated with conducting research, for example, dataset acquisition, additional statistical or methodological training, meeting with scholars associated with original datasets, and fieldwork away from the student's home campus.

AERA invites education-related research proposals using NCES, NSF, and other federal databases. Research Grants are available for faculty at institutions of higher education, postdoctoral researchers, and other doctoral-level scholars. Applications are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, such as but not limited to, education, sociology, economics, psychology, demography, statistics, and psychometrics.

Historically, grants through the program have supported research projects on a range of topics and disciplines, including education, psychology, sociology, economics, history, and anthropology; they also employ a wide range of research methods. The Chicago-based Spencer Foundation, the only national foundation focused exclusively on supporting education research, is inviting applications for the Lyle Spencer Research Awards Program. The program envisions a broad conception of educational practice that encompasses formal and informal learning as well as the institutional, policy, and normative frameworks that influence and are influenced by learning and developmental processes and seeks to engage the research community in thinking big and engaging with work that is thoughtful, critical of prevailing assumptions, self-critical about the work and its limitations, and relevant to the aim of building knowledge for the "lasting improvement in education." Grants of up to five years and ranging in amount between $525,000 and $1 million will be awarded to intellectually ambitious research projects with the potential to transform the practice of education. Scholars from all disciplines (including education, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, economics, history, law, or neuroscience) are invited to submit a proposal. Projects may utilize a wide array of research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, ethnographies, design-based research, participatory methods, and archival research.

The Spencer Foundation, the only national foundation focused exclusively on supporting education research, is accepting applications for its Research Grants on Education program, which provides support to education research projects with the potential to contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived. Through the program, the foundation supports work that fosters creative and open-minded scholarship, engages in deep inquiry, and examines robust questions related to education. To this end, the program will support proposals with multiple disciplinary and methodological perspectives, both domestically and internationally, and from scholars at various stages in their career. Proposals may span a wide range of topics and disciplines that creatively investigate questions central to education, including education, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, law, economics, history, and neuroscience. Researchers may incorporate data from multiple and varied sources, span a sufficient length of time as to achieve a depth of understanding, and/or work closely with practitioners or community members over the life of the project. Projects that thoughtfully consider the trajectories, implications, and potential impacts of their findings, including how the knowledge may be shared and utilized across the field, in practice, in policy making, or with the broader public, are encouraged. (The program is "field-initiated," in that proposals are not requested in response to a particular research topic, discipline, design, or method.)

Bringing Theory to Practice Project, an independent project established by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, is accepting proposals from universities and colleges in the United States for projects aimed promoting the nexus of engaged learning, civic engagement, and psychosocial well-being among college and university students. Seminar grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded for projects that bring together diverse members of the campus community to discuss the civic mission of the institution and how the full expression of that mission can be achieved. Proposals will be accepted on a quarterly-deadline system (June 15, September 15, December 15, and March 15), with awards announced two weeks after each deadline. Program Development grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to enhance or extend a program that is consistent with BTtoP's objective of promoting engaged learning, civic engagement, and the psychosocial well-being of students. Institutional matching support is required for all grants. Proposals will bee accepted on a quarterly-deadline system (June 15, September 15, December 15, and March 15), with awards announced six to eight weeks after each deadline.

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is now accepting proposals for a new grant called the Saudi-American Educational and Cultural Initiative Grants (SAECIG) and is for Saudi and U.S. non-governmental and community organizations, universities, entrepreneurs, cultural organizations or qualified individuals who propose to work together to develop or expand educational, professional and cultural exchange activities and promote dialogue and partnership between the people of the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The new grant will support innovative forms of collaboration to expand the diversity of activities in the U.S.-Saudi partnership and develop the next generation of leaders, especially among youth, young professionals and women, and to promote mutual understanding and respect through long-term partnership and cooperation between our two countries.

As part of NSF's Cyberinfrastructure Framework for 21st Century Science and Engineering (CIF21) activity, the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR), and the Office of Cyberinfrastructure seek to enable research communities to develop visions, teams, and capabilities dedicated to creating new, large-scale, next-generation data resources and relevant analytic techniques to advance fundamental research for the SBE and EHR areas of research.  Successful proposals will outline activities that will have significant impacts across multiple fields by enabling new types of data-intensive research.  Investigators should think broadly and create a vision that extends intellectually across multiple disciplines and that includes--but is not limited to--the SBE or EHR areas of research.

Proposed fellowships must fit the Grant Foundation's research interests. The foundation currently supports research to understand and improve the everyday settings of youth between the ages of 8 and 25 in the United States. Specifically, the foundation funds studies that enhance the understanding of how youth settings work, how they affect youth development, and how they can be improved; and when, how, and under what conditions research evidence is used in policy and practices that affect youth, and how its use can be improved. To be eligible, applicants must be influential mid-career practitioners, policy makers, or researchers, and propose one or two tax-exempt private and governmental organizations that are willing to "house" and mentor the fellow. For the purposes of this program, a mid-career professional is defined as having eight to twenty years of cumulative experience in his/her current role as a researcher, policy maker, or practitioner.

CAREER: The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. Such activities should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from junior faculty members at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

The Science and Technology Centers (STC): Integrative Partnerships program supports innovative, potentially transformative, complex research and education projects that require large-scale, long-term awards. STCs conduct world-class research through partnerships among academic institutions, national laboratories, industrial organizations, and/or other public/private entities, and via international collaborations, as appropriate. They provide a means to undertake significant investigations at the interfaces of disciplines and/or fresh approaches within disciplines. STCs may involve any area of science and engineering that NSF supports

The Kettering Fund was founded July 1, 1958 by Charles F. Kettering, renowned inventor, businessman and philanthropist. The mission of The Kettering Fund is to support scientific, medical, social and educational studies and research carried on within the State of Ohio. The Fund's Distribution Committees meet biannually (May and November) to determine funding recommendations to the trustees of The Kettering Family Foundation.

The Misk Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aim to empower the youth and prepare them for success in the future knowledge economy. Great opportunities exist as technologies and industries advance faster than ever before. But disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence, also present challenges. Industries will undergo major transformations and according to the McKinsey Global Institute, approximately half of all jobs today may be lost to automation across the developing and developed world. Moreover, major societal issues that face humanity, such as inequality and climate change, continue to spread in a complex manner. We are looking for new innovative ideas that transform teaching or school leadership to better prepare children with the 21st century skills they need to succeed in the future. Modern 21st century skills, such as problem solving, leadership, creativity, and adaptability, require a new active, student-centered system for learning. We seek ideas that better prepare teachers and school leaders to drive this new active 21st century system for learning.

The Conference on College Composition and Communication is inviting proposals for its Research Initiative, which is designed to advance the organization's mission to advocate for broad and evolving definitions of literacy, communication, rhetoric, and writing (including multi-modal discourse, digital communication, and diverse language practices) and empower individuals and communities through bold, creative research. Through the program, grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded in support of proposals designed to investigate key challenges faced by literacy, communication, rhetoric and writing instructors and administrators in their classrooms and programs. Proposals should directly address the impact that the research might have on disciplinary and public discourse about these topics and  convey results in at least two final products: one that is addressed to a scholarly audience of researchers and teachers in the field, and one for a clearly specified audience beyond those in the field.

The AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence, in partnership with the Association for Institutional Research, is accepting applications for its 2017 Research and Dissertation Fellows Program. The annual competition awards grants to scholars and doctoral students in support of year-long research projects. The program is designed to promote scholarship on issues related to access, affordability, and the value of legal education specifically, and graduate and professional education more broadly. Preference will be given to proposals that use regional, national, or multi-institutional datasets (although research focused on a single institution is acceptable). In addition, preference will be given to proposals that specifically address legal education; however, proposals that study access, affordability, and value of graduate and professional education more generally also are encouraged. Researchers may analyze pre-existing data or include the construction of a new dataset in their proposal. Two levels of grants are available to recipients affiliated with a non-profit U.S. postsecondary institution or relevant higher and legal education organization. 1) Research Grants: grants of up $50,000 are available to faculty, practitioners, and scholars. 2) Dissertation Grants: Grants of up to $25,000 are available to doctoral students for dissertation research and writing under the guidance of a faculty advisor.
