Communities in the United States (US) and around the world are entering a new era of transformation in which residents and their surrounding environments are increasingly connected through rapidly-changing intelligent technologies. This transformation offers great promise for improved wellbeing and prosperity but poses significant challenges at the complex intersection of technology and society. The goal of the NSF Smart and Connected Communities (S&CC) program solicitation is to accelerate the creation of the scientific and engineering foundations that will enable smart and connected communities to bring about new levels of economic opportunity and growth, safety and security, health and wellness, and overall quality of life. For the purposes of this solicitation, communities are defined as having geographically-delineated boundaries-such as towns, cities, counties, neighborhoods, community districts, rural areas, and tribal regions-consisting of various populations, with the structure and ability to engage in meaningful ways with proposed research activities. A "smart and connected community" is, in turn, defined as a community that synergistically integrates intelligent technologies with the natural and built environments, including infrastructure, to improve the social, economic, and environmental well-being of those who live, work, or travel within it.

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting proposals for a collaborative program that provides medium-term support to displaced human rights defenders. DRL envisions a program that would enable individual human rights defenders and civil society organizations to continue their work advocating for fundamental freedoms, despite forced relocation due to threats or attacks on them for their work.

The National Endowment for the Humanities, which funds long-term (four to twelve months) postdoctoral fellowships at AAS, has established the guidelines for applicants. NEH fellowships are for persons who have already completed their formal professional training. Degree candidates and persons seeking support for work in pursuit of a degree are not eligible to hold AAS-NEH fellowships. Foreign nationals who have been residents in the United States for at least three years immediately preceding the application deadline for the fellowship are eligible. Preference will be given to individuals who have not held long-term fellowships during the three years preceding the period for which the application is being made. AAS-NEH fellows are expected to be in regular and continuous residence at the Society. They must devote full time to their study and may not accept teaching assignments or undertake any other major activities during the tenure of their award. Fellows may hold other major fellowships or grants during fellowship tenure, in addition to sabbaticals and supplemental grants from their own institutions. Other NEH-funded grants may be held serially, but not concurrently.

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award allows you to spend five years building up a working group and working on a high-profile, innovative research project of your own choice at a research institution of your own choice in Germany.

With this solicitation, NIJ continues to build upon its research and evaluation efforts to better understand, prevent, and respond to trafficking in persons in the United States. Applicants should propose research projects that-first and foremost-have clear implications for criminal justice policy and practice in the United States. This year, NIJ is particularly interested in research responding to the following priority areas: 1) Labor trafficking 2) Phased evaluation, not to exceed a 24-month period of performance. 3) Outcome evaluation of trafficking focused victim service providers 4) Develop a better understanding of traffickers Strong applications that address human trafficking in the U.S. in a criminal justice context that fall outside these priority areas may also be considered.

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that will contribute to stabilization in Iraq by advancing human rights and rule of law; promoting reconciliation, accountability, and atrocities prevention; strengthening effective governance and increasing political participation; and empowering Iraqis.

NIJ is seeking applications for the funding of research and program evaluation projects that inform efforts to prevent and reduce intentional, interpersonal firearm violence and public mass shootings in the United States. NIJ will support scientifically rigorous research and evaluation projects designed to strengthen the knowledge base and produce findings with the high practical utility to improve public safety. While NIJ will consider applications for relevant, scientifically rigorous research and evaluation projects designed to produce findings that address firearm violence, NIJ is particularly interested in applications in the following four areas: (1) Evaluate prevention or intervention programs and/or policies aiming to reduce firearm violence; (2) Examine the defensive use of firearms and its impact on firearm violence; (3) Examine the impact of plea bargaining firearm charges on firearm violence, and (4) Improve the understanding of mass shooters and mass shooting incidents to inform prevention efforts at a local level. This solicitation supports the U.S. Department of Justice’s priority to prevent and reduce gun crimes, gun violence related victimization, and the wide range of criminal activities related to firearm violence.

With the triad of concepts "utopia, experience and threat", three of the key references to conflicting social value systems from ancient times to today are touched upon: Social movements inspired by utopias determine ideal preconceptions of politics, religion and society and fight for their realization. In societies that see themselves as democracies, people have experiences, which they mobilize in a way that is critical of democracy - be it against democracy as such or against specific aspects of the relevant established democratic order. The historically - and currently - frequently found references to conflicting social value systems is the impression of threat, as a result of which, for example, ruling elites deploy their law enforcement forces against social movements, various social groups fight for re-order and new order, religiously based preconceptions of society or justice come into conflict, or social inequality becomes a political issue. All three points of reference can be utilized for historical research into conflict histories surrounding the correct order and just society. They expand the theme of the funding program beyond the classic fields of protest and revolutionary history, or the history of constitutions, elections and political parties - which are likewise part of it all - to include a multiperspectival history of conflict and culture surrounding the right order in society and politics.

The funding program is designed to be interdisciplinary and to facilitate projects in which there are varied dimensions to the examination of abandoned cities. At the same time, there should be a focus on causal correlations, both with regard to specific individual cultures and spanning all cultures, and on specifics of place and time. Thus far, such places have emerged for very different reasons, including military destruction, natural disasters, epidemics, environmental pollution, economic collapse, financial speculation, mobility, migration, centralization, deindustrialization, or post-colonial change, to name but a few. The aim of the program is to describe the tangible cultures of interpretation, knowledge and perception within these different contexts. Lost Cities are part of a distinct culture of memory, for example, which serves for the negotiation of identities, the preservation of knowledge cultures, the formulation of criticism of progress, or the construction of mythical or sacral topographies as part of a veritable "ruin cult". On this basis, the focus here should not be on the question of which factors led to the city's abandonment. Rather, it is the abandoned cities themselves that are of particular interest, as well as the different forms of their interpretation, instrumentalization and coding in various cultures and time frames.

Founded in 1979 in honor of LIFE Magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith, the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund seeks to honor and support documentary photographers who embrace the ideology of the fund's namesake and whose work eschews conventional, mass media-driven work in order to spur dialogue and reveal the multifaceted nature and tenacity of the human spirit.  To that end, the fund is accepting applications for the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Student Photographers, and the Howard Chapnick Grant. W. Eugene Smith Grant -  Grants of up to $35,000 will be awarded to photographers whose proposed project uses compelling photojournalism to express an issue of concern reflective of the human condition. The W. Eugene Smith Grant for Student Photographers has similar parameters but is designated for current students. A grant of up to $4,000 will be awarded through the program. Howard Chapnick Grant - A grant of up to $5,000 will be awarded to an individual who is not a photographer but instead works in a related field that reinforces the impact of photojournalism (e.g., research, education, photo editing). The program supports costs related to the artistic and professional development of the recipient.

The purpose of this program is to increase citizens' access to useful information.To achieve the main purpose of increasing citizens' access to useful information. MSP 2.0 will pursue the following illustrative sub-purposes: Sub-Purpose 1: Improved Capacity of community radios to respond to rural citizens' information needs; and Sub-Purpose 2: Improved Sustainability of Media Sector to Provide Quality Information to Citizens. The new media strengthening programming will directly support the DRG PAD Intermediate Result (IR) 1: More effective civil society participation in governance processes, and more specifically the Sub-IR 1.1: Citizens better informed of rights and responsibilities.

The Domestic Radicalization and Terrorism program strives to better understand the primary drivers of radicalization and what can be done to prevent or intervene during the radicalization process through programmatic efforts. In FY2019, NIJ will emphasize an interest in evaluations of new and existing demonstration programs to prevent terrorism. NIJ will encourage applicants to submit projects which conduct phased, comparative and multi-site programmatic evaluations, help the field better understand risk factors, and develop risk assessment tools. NIJ will also encourage applicants to submit projects to increase knowledge surrounding deradicalization and disengagement, in addition to programming and services provided to those incarcerated for or released from terrorism related offenses.

The purpose of the Adult Drug Court TTA Program is to assist operational adult drug treatment court programs in the development and implementation of improved program practices for increased program effectiveness and long-term participant success. BJA envisions a collaborative model of cooperating partners to assist operational courts with their individual goals of building and maximizing capacity; ensuring potential drug court participants are identified and assessed for risk and need; ensuring drug court participants receive targeted research-based services; enhancing the provision of recovery support services; ensuring the provision of community reintegration services to achieve long term recovery; and assisting in collecting and reporting on performance measures and identify and explain trends.

Organizations interested in submitting Statements of Interest (SOI) outlining project concepts and organizational capacity to implement nonproliferation-related programming may propose activities in response to the SOI that help stem the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems, as well as irresponsible transfers of conventional weapons, by assisting countries with establishing effective strategic trade and border control systems meeting international standards.

Grants are awarded to projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, as well as for the development and dissemination of scholarly databases, documentation projects, museum exhibitions and publications, photographic campaigns, scholarly catalogs and publications, and technical and scientific studies. The program also supports activities that permit art historians to share their expertise through international exchanges, professional meetings, conferences, symposia, consultations, the presentation of research, and other professional events.

As part of this mission, the foundation is accepting applications from nonprofit performing ensembles for general operating support or special project support. For the 2019 funding cycle, support will be given to projects that take place between September 2019 and August 2020. (The foundation will only consider projects that fall outside that window under extraordinary circumstances.) In general, grants will range between $1,000 and $7,500, although larger grants may be awarded to larger performing organizations with an extraordinary commitment to contemporary concert music or a particularly significant project. To be eligible, applicants must be a nonprofit amateur choral ensemble or youth choir performing contemporary classical music at an exceptionally high artistic level.

Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded in support of single events, lectures or panel discussions, reading and discussion groups, film series, and/or online resources such as interpretive brochures, reading lists, audio/video recordings of scholarly presentations, and classroom resources. Eligible projects must be rooted in one or more of the disciplines of the humanities, enlist the participation of humanities scholars and/or experts in the project's planning and execution, and engage the public in thoughtful and informed activities that explore humanities topics, especially those related to Florida or of interest to Floridians.

The Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) announces its 2019 Research Grants Competition. The grants are intended to support research that expands our understanding of the Holodomor, the publication of research results, preservation of materials, and organization of and participation in academic forums. Grants for individuals will not exceed $6,000.00 CAD, with most grants ranging from $1,000.00 to $3,000.00 CAD in past years. HREC also accepts proposals for collaborative projects that engage scholars and institutions from both in and outside Ukraine. Collaborative grants may be awarded for a maximum of $15,000.00 CAD.
