With support from the Henry Luce Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies is inviting applications for its Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art. Through the program, ten fellowships of $36,000 (with an additional $4,000 in the form of a travel and research allowance) will be awarded to graduate students at any stage of PhD dissertation research or writing who are exploring topics in the history of the visual arts of the United States. The fellowships are portable and may be carried out in residence at the fellow's home institution or at another appropriate site. Projects should be focused foremost on the art object and/or image and employ an art-historical or visual studies approach. Although the topic may be historically and/or theoretically grounded, proposals whose emphases are predominantly socio-historical will not be considered. Students with appropriate projects whose degrees will be granted by departments other than art history are eligible only if the principal dissertation advisor is in a department of art history. Students preparing theses for the Master of Fine Arts degree are not eligible. To be eligible, applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and be enrolled at degree-granting institutions in the U.S. Applicants also must have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation by the beginning of the award period. The College Art Association is accepting Letters of Inquiry for book-length scholarly manuscripts under contract with a publisher in a range of areas, including the history of American art, visual studies, and related subjects. For the purposes of this grant program, "American art" is defined as art (circa 1500-1980) produced in what is now the geographic United States.

The program supports the publication of book-length scholarly manuscripts in the history of American art, visual studies, and related subjects that have been accepted by a publisher on their merits but cannot be published in the most desirable form without a subsidy. For this grant program, "American art" is defined as art created in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

University College Cork invites applications for scholarships in the four-year structured PhD programme in Digital Arts and Humanities (DAH). Successful candidates will be registered with the full-time inter-disciplinary structured PhD programme co-ordinated with an all-Irish university consortium. Candidates will pursue their individual research agendas within the program, based on projects developed from proposals which they provide during the application process. The School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield is offering competitive PhD scholarships for 2015. Part of the call represents our aspiration to extend existing, and build future research relationships within the Yorkshire Sculpture triangle.  Art Research and Sculptural Thinking - PhD Scholarships Drawing from expertise in sculpture studies, photography, art history, philosophy, theory, public engagement and cultural analysis, staff working in this area have made significant contributions to understanding the changing role of art, its distribution and reception in local and global environments. Building on a longstanding formal relationship with Yorkshire Sculpture Park, new research exchanges are being established both regionally, in the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle and worldwide.

The Association of Historians of American Art (AHAA) offers two grants of $500 each to defray College Art Association conference expenses, including transportation, housing, and registration fees, for presenting members. The first grant is for an ABD graduate student in American art history who is currently enrolled in a graduate program and will travel to CAA's annual conference to appear on the meeting program. The second grant is to support a contingent faculty member or museum staff person whose work engages with the art of the United States, does not have access to travel funds from their institution of employment, and will travel to CAA's annual conference to appear on the meeting program. Applications for Travel Grants are due by December 1 and must include a short cv and letter of interest. The letter should indicate which award is being applied for - Professional or Graduate Student - and must include the applicant's paper and session title as they appear on the CAA program. For the Professional award, applicants should also address their institutional affiliation. The two winners of the AHAA Travel Grant must be members of AHAA at the time of their application. All qualified candidates will be entered into a lottery and the winners selected at random. Applicants will be notified via email by December 15. To qualify for the program, works of art must be significant to the cultural heritage of the country or region, or important to the history of art; on view to the public (or will be on view once conservation is complete); and be a painting, work on paper, photograph, sculpture, architectural or archeological piece, important book or manuscript, tapestry or work of decorative or applied art in danger of deterioration.

Yale University Press, in partnership with the Terra Foundation for American Art, is offering a new prize for an unpublished manuscript or previously published manuscript in a language other than English written by a non-U.S. author. The manuscript should make a significant contribution to scholarship on the historical visual arts of what is now the geographic United States.   In helping to overcome the language barrier that often divides scholars and deters international research and collaboration, the prize aims to advance and internationalize scholarship on American art and seeks to recognize original and thorough research, sound methodology, and significance in the field. The award is especially intended to encourage authors who take the field of American art history into new historical and interpretive terrain, or who establish connections among the work of scholars within and outside the United States, providing a model of international exchange important to sustaining relevance and academic rigor for the future of the field.

With the goal of promoting undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity in Arts and Humanities education, the Arts and Humanities Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research will offer financial support for faculty to present on the process and/or results of undergraduate research at regional or national Arts and/or Humanities conferences. The awards will be from $600 and up to three will be awarded for presentations that have been accepted by Feb. 10, 2015, to be presented (or which have been presented) in the fall of 2014 or spring of 2015 (by June 1, 2015).

The American Council of Learned Societies is inviting applications for its Getty/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowships in the History of Art The postdoctoral fellowships are intended to support an academic year of research and/or writing by early-career scholars on a project that will make a substantial and original contribution to the understanding of art and its history. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant. ACLS does not fund creative work (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects.

The program awards grants for the digitization of important visual resources (especially photographic archives) in the area of pre-modern European art history and primary textual sources (especially the literary and documentary sources of European art history), as well as for promising initiatives in online publishing and for innovative experiments in the field of digital art history. The program does not typically support the digitization of museum object collections.

Through its fellowship programs, the Starr Center supports innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the American past - especially by fostering the art of written history. The Hodson Trust-John Carter Brown Fellowship is open to applicants from a wide range of disciplines who are pursuing projects on the literature, history, culture, or art of the Americas before 1830. The Historians of British Art invites applications for its 2014 publication grant. The society will award up to $600 to offset publication costs in the field of British art or visual culture that has been accepted by a publisher. Applicants must be current members of HBA.

Through the program, grants will be awarded in support of projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, development and dissemination of scholarly databases, documentation projects, museum exhibitions and publications, photographic campaigns, scholarly catalogs and publications, and technical and scientific studies. The program also supports activities that permit art historians to share their expertise through international exchanges, professional meetings, conferences, symposia, consultations, the presentation of research, and other professional events.

The Harry Ransom Center fellowship program at the University of Texas at Austin was established in 1989 under the directorship of Thomas F. Staley to encourage and facilitate use of the center's collections for scholarly inquiry. The program enables scholars from around the world to visit the center and conduct on-site research in its extensive collections of manuscripts, rare books, photographs, artworks, and other materials documenting America's cultural history and the creative process In 2020-21, the center will award ten dissertation fellowships and up to fifty postdoctoral fellowships for projects that require substantial on-site use of the center's collections. The collections support research in all areas of the humanities, including literature, photography, film, art, the performing arts, music, and cultural history. Through the program, recipients receive $3,500 per month for one to three months. Travel stipends and dissertation fellowships provide stipends of $2,000. International fellows will receive an additional $500 to offset visa and travel costs. 

Prospective history teachers interested in a grant supported alternative to Teach for America that extends the Liberal Arts and Humanities to underserved populations can apply now for a one-year Master of Arts in Teaching degree and California credential through Bard College in the Los Angeles "Promise Zone," a recently designated federal anti-poverty area.  Consistent with the mission of Bard College, all candidates spend the bulk of their coursework studying historical content, historiography, and discipline-specific history pedagogy. Admitted applicants will complete classes and internship residencies at Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), a dynamic community organization on Wilshire Boulevard in a diverse, largely Latino community challenged by high rates of childhood poverty.  Bard graduate students are expected to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Bard-HOLA community and complete coursework in their fields while building meaningful educative relationships with middle and high school youth.  Programs are offered in literature, history, mathematics, biology. Program residents will graduate with a deeper understanding of their subject area discipline, a master's degree, a California credential, and a year of instructional experience in one of the nation's most ambitious, place-based anti-poverty initiatives.

The Caxton Club, an organization devoted to "the literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books," offers annual grants for expenses of up to $2,500 (each) for book-related projects. The grant will cover expenses, such as travel, materials, and tuition fees. In the 2018-2019 academic year, Caxton Club grants were offered to Midwestern graduate students with projects in the following areas: bibliography, book arts, history of the book, literary studies, pring culture studies, and zines.

The Ancient & Modern Prize was established in 2000 to provide support for scholars who miss out on funding because they are either too young or too old. The winner of the Ancient & Modern Prize receives £1,000, and the runner-up receives the Godfrey Goodwin Prize of £500. The project should relate to any of the subject areas covered by the sponsoring journals: Halı (www.hali.com) and Cornucopia (www.cornucopia.net).  These areas include textile arts of all cultures and periods (Halı) and the art, archaeology, culture, history, and cultural heritage of civilizations in Turkey (Cornucopia). As long as it pertains to one of the above subject areas, there is no restriction on geographic location or time period.
