This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages innovative research to enhance the quality of measurements of dietary intake and physical activity. Applications submitted under this FOA are encouraged to include development of: novel assessment approaches; better methods to evaluate instruments; assessment tools for culturally diverse populations or various age groups, including children and older adults; improved technology or applications of existing technology; statistical methods/modeling to improve assessment and/or to correct for measurement errors or biases; methods to investigate the multidimensionality of diet and physical activity behavior through pattern analysis; or integrated measurement of diet and physical activity along with the environmental context of such behaviors.  

The purpose of these cooperative agreements is to further IHS health program objectives in the AI/AN community with expanded outreach and education efforts for the MSPI and HIV/AIDS programs on a national scale and in the interest of improving Indian health care. This announcement includes two separate awards, each of which will be awarded as noted below. The purpose of the MSPI award is to further the goals of the national MSPI program. The MSPI is a national demonstration project aimed at addressing the dual problems of methamphetamine use and suicide in Indian Country. The MSPI supports an AI/AN community driven focus on the utilization and development of evidence-based and practice-based intervention models that promote a culturally appropriate prevention, treatment, and postvention approach to methamphetamine use and suicide. The six goals of the MSPI are to effectively prevent, reduce, or delay the use and/or spread of methamphetamine use; build on the foundation of prior methamphetamine and suicide prevention and treatment efforts in order to support the IHS, Tribes, and urban Indian health organizations in developing and implementing Tribal and/or culturally appropriate methamphetamine and suicide prevention and early intervention strategies; increasing access to methamphetamine and suicide prevention services; improving services for behavioral health issues associated with methamphetamine use and suicide prevention; promoting the development of new and promising services that are culturally and community relevant; and demonstrating efficacy and impact. The purpose of the HIV/AIDS award is to further the goals of the national HIV/AIDS program. HIV and AIDS are a critical and growing health issue within the AI/AN population. The IHS National HIV/AIDS Program seeks to avoid complacency and to increase awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS on AI/ANs. All activities are part of the IHS's implementation plan to meet the three goals of the President's National HIV/A

This FOA solicits Laboratories (Lab Hubs) providing a comprehensive suite of analysis of environmental exposures in samples such as dust, soil, and drinking water related to the immediate environment of individuals and linked to health endpoints. Each Hub will incorporate a developmental core to develop novel measures for environmental samples, expanding the number of current, commonly measured analytes, and developing new methods for detecting analytes in other environmental samples and providing additional insight into the sources of exposures that influence human health. The Environmental Monitoring Lab will also serve as a 'clearinghouse for evaluation and provision of emerging tools and technologies for personal exposure assessment to the client community.

The NIEHS and partnering Institutes and Centers are establishing an infrastructure, the Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR) as a continuation of the Children's Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR). The goal of this consortium is to provide the research community access to laboratory and statistical analyses to add or expand the inclusion of environmental exposures in their research and to make that data publicly available as a means to improve our knowledge of the comprehensive effects of environmental exposures on human health throughout the life course. This FOA solicits Laboratories (Lab Hubs) that can provide comprehensive measurement of the exposome using untargeted approaches (such as metabolomics using libraries enriched for environmental exposure biomarkers) for biological samples derived from extant or ongoing human health studies in the NIH extramural research community. Each Hub will incorporate an administrative core and a developmental core to improve the ability of untargeted platform to detect a wide range of environmental exposures and endogenous changes in response to environmental influences in a variety of biological matrices.

NIOSH uses cooperative agreements to arrange collaborative surveillance and research opportunities with state health departments, universities, labor unions, and nonprofit organizations. NIOSH funds a broad array of cooperative agreements to develop knowledge for preventing occupational diseases, injury, and death. The U24 cooperative agreement mechanism will be used to provide tribal nations, states, and large municipalities with technical assistance and services to build occupational safety and health (OSH) program capacity and promote the use of multiple-source surveillance data. The awardee(s) will advance education and translation through the operation of an open-access online repository for occupational health information and surveillance data. States, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and tribes will draw upon relationships with their stakeholders to use surveillance data to take action such as identify or support tribal and state priorities, and guide coordinated, targeted efforts to protect workers; monitor statistical and other trends and progress over time (i.e., burden and impact); propose pilot and evaluation activities for addressing disease burden or impact; conduct educational and outreach activities; and to develop prevention and intervention recommendations.

This research opportunity encourages studies that address scientific areas potentially relevant to vaccine safety such as 1) characterization of physiological and immunological responses to vaccines and vaccine components, including different adjuvants; 2) how genetic variations affect immune/physiological responses that may impact vaccine safety; 3) identification of risk factors (e.g., infection history, predisposition to or presence of allergic and/or autoimmune disease and biological markers that may be used to assess whether there is a relationship between certain diseases or disorders and licensed vaccines; 4) creation/evaluation of statistical methodologies for analyzing data on vaccine safety, including data available from existing data sources such as passive reporting systems or healthcare databases; or 5) the application of genomic/molecular technologies and systems biology approaches to evaluate vaccine safety. This FOA aligns with the research goals and objectives outlined in the U.S. National Vaccine Plan).

Safety Matters: Managing Relationships in Women's Facilities is a research-based, gender-informed training program delivered to agency/jurisdiction teams of correctional professionals with responsibility for the safe and effective management of women in correctional facilities. The focus of this program is providing enhanced tools for corrections practitioners to address potentially dangerous and compromising relationships that can occur within a women's facility, while supporting the building of healthy and safe relationships. The training blends Virtual Instructor Lead Training (VILT) with on-site classroom Instructor Lead Training (ILT) with a targeted ILT follow up Training of Staff Trainers (TOT). Program content is drawn from PREA-related National Institute of Justice and Bureau of Justice Statistics research and data specific to sexual and physical safety in women's prisons.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is soliciting research to commence a multi-site study on the human health effects of exposures to drinking water contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Proposed study sites must include communities using PFAS-contaminated private residential wells or public water systems. Exposure assessment will be based on measured PFAS serum levels as well as estimated PFAS serum levels derived from pharmacokinetic modeling of reconstructed PFAS drinking water concentrations over time. Specifically, grant awardees will be required to conduct historical reconstruction/water modeling in order to determine the PFAS concentration. Effect biomarkers such as lipids and tests of immune and thyroid function derived from pharmacokinetic modeling of reconstructed PFAS drinking water concentrations over time will be evaluated. ATSDR intends this research to be a two-part program consisting of (1) a mandatory core research protocol to allow ATSDR to aggregate the core data and to compare laboratory and statistical analyses across sites, and (2) each successful awardee will have the option to propose additional investigator-initiated research questions and hypotheses related to the overall goals of this NOFO.

The Chronic Kidney Disease Biomarkers Consortium [CKD BioCon] was established in September 2009 as a result of RFA-DK-08-015 [Chronic Kidney Disease Biomarker Discovery and Validation Consortium (U01)] to develop, validate and qualify biomarkers based on existing biosamples from well-characterized CKD patients with longitudinal follow-up. The second phase of the CKD BioCon was funded in September 2014, pursuant to RFA DK-14-011. Two additional Centers were brought into the Consortium in 2015. The CKD BioCon currently consists of eight Participating Clinical Centers (PCCs) and is actively engaged in multiple research protocols. The DCC's goalover the next two years will enhance biomarker research in CKD by a) providing ongoing logistical support, expertise and statistical support to consortial work involving one or more PCCs, b) supervising the proposal, approval and progress of consortial studies, and supporting the conduct of the studies, and c) supervising transfer of data and samples between members of the consortium and repository activities of the consortium, as well as the NIDDK repository.

This project is a longitudinal study of annual state-by-state and national statistics on residential services and supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The project will include funding for supports and services from a variety of sources, including public and non-public, Medicaid-funded and non-Medicaid-funded residential and supportive services. The project will: • Utilize a large multistate database on individuals with developmental disabilities to examine the associations between personal characteristics, housing, financing and support models, state systems on inclusion, self-determination, satisfaction, and outcomes • Conduct state policy and program surveys on key topics in residential and other community services • Maintain a clearinghouse of information and resources on consumer-controlled housing, the direct support workforce, and community living outcomes The project will disseminate research using annual reports, the IMPACT, and theQualityMall.org website. The Build-a-Report tool and website allow reports to be customized. The grantee will collaborate with other AoD data collection projects to show targeted current year and longitudinal data on the project website.  

REISSUE of PAR-18-733 The NIH Common Fund has established the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (Kids First) to develop a pediatric research data resource populated by genome sequence and phenotype data that will be of high value for the communities of investigators who study the genetics of childhood cancers and/or structural birth defects. The overall goal of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Data Resource is to help researchers understand the underlying mechanisms of these conditions, leading to more refined diagnostic capabilities and ultimately more targeted therapies, as well as to develop an integrated pediatric research data resource by obtaining and aggregating genome sequence and phenotype data for as many relevant structural birth defects and pediatric cancer cohorts as possible and to advance research in this area through the broad sharing of these data with the research community. This FOA is intended to promote meritorious small research projects focused on the development and analyses of childhood cancer and/or structural birth defects datasets that are part of the Kids First Data Resource or could be included in the Kids First Data Resource. Development of statistical methodology appropriate for analyzing genome-wide data relevant to childhood cancer and/or structural birth defects may also be proposed.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Research Conference Grant (R13) applications to conduct an annual intensive workshop/conference/meeting that addresses the needs of early stage HIV/AIDS researchers utilizing nonhuman primates (NHPs) as they translate preclinical research from NHPs to human clinical trials. The objectives of the meeting(s) supported by this FOA are to provide these early stage HIV/AIDS researchers with guidance on conducting preclinical research to inform clinical trials on reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS infection, including vaccine development and testing; developing next-generation HIV therapies, including potential cure therapies; treatment of HIV-associated coinfections, comorbidities and complications; and infection prevention strategies. In addition to guidance on translating results to clinical trials, the conference should target developing skills related to networking, grantsmanship, and goal/milestone-driven projects. Conference topics should also include other considerations such as statistical and host genetics considerations; methods to translate the results of NHP studies to clinical trials in humans; and how to develop new NHP research programs to better reflect clinical observations and findings in human HIV/AIDS patients.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) supports a variety of activities in health departments and organizations aimed at preventing and controlling cancer, the second leading cause of death in US men and women. Since the passage of the Cancer Registries Amendment Act in 1992, the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) has collected data on cancer occurrence, extent, treatment and outcomes in over 45 states and jurisdictions, representing 96% of the US population. CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) has supported successful partnerships with national organizations to define standardized practices in U.S. cancer surveillance and assure and complete, timely, and high-quality data for the official federal U.S. Cancer Statistics. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to build strong partnerships among national organizations involved directly in cancer surveillance in order to enhance the data quality and operational efficiency of CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). This program has three essential components: 1) Education, Translation and Quality Control of cancer surveillance standards and best practices; 2) Cancer Staging Collaboration and Support; and 3) Standardization and Support for Laboratory and Biomarker Electronic Reporting. The overarching goal of this project is to collaboratively define and promote uniform standards in cancer staging, collection and reporting. Funded entities will identify specific enhancement needs of cancer registries and support cancer surveillance professionals, including reporters (e.g. facilities, labs), tumor registrars, and registries to submit high quality, standardized data via central cancer registries to NPCR. Relevant performance measures will be used to assess the recipients’ activities that enhance the standards, quality, and operations of NPCR cancer surveillance system.

Family caregivers shoulder many emotional and economic burdens in the course of delivering care to loved ones. Their role however is essential. According to a 2018 report from bipartisan policy center the majority of long-term care services and supports comes from family caregivers with estimates reporting that family caregivers have provided $470 billion in care. Additionally, the same report cites a statistic that family caregivers aged 50 and over lose approximately $304,000 in income and benefits over the duration of their care. Consequently family caregivers are especially vulnerable to experiencing the devastating economic burdens of the provision of care. As such, the development and dissemination of training and information to improve and strengthen the financial literacy of family caregivers is paramount in efforts to help them maintain their caregiving duties while concurrently helping them better understand and prepare for the potential financial impacts associated with the provision of care. The target population to be served will be all eligible family caregivers as defined in Title III E of the Older Americans Act. The objectives for this new funding opportunity include:* Advance understanding of the need for and the available interventions to improve financial literacy among family caregivers, incluidng gaps found in existing interventions, and develop a stragety for addressing these needs
