The purpose of this project is to obtain economic information about vaccines and immunization policies, programs, and practices using economic and decision analyses and other appropriate methods. The results of up to four economic studies will be used to help inform policy and the development of effective interventions. These studies will provide better understanding of the costs and benefits to relevant populations of health interventions related to vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as those diseases with potential vaccines in development.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite applications proposing to apply behavioral economics principles to build interventions into electronic health records (EHRs) for the purpose of improving physician compliance with recommended treatment guidelines, thereby improving quality of care, health outcomes and reducing health disparities.  This FOA will support pilot research to test the feasibility of implementing and integrating EHR-based behavioral economics interventions (R21 phase) that, if successful, can transition to an R33 phase for implementation of large pragmatic trials.

Examples of such research include: (1) clinical quality improvement; (2) quality improvement in services organization and management; (3) implementation research; (4) economic and cost studies; and (5) development or improvement of research methodology, analytic approaches, and measurement instrumentation used in the study of drug, alcohol, and tobacco prevention, treatment, and recovery services.

Family caregivers shoulder many emotional and economic burdens in the course of delivering care to loved ones. Their role however is essential. According to a 2018 report from bipartisan policy center the majority of long-term care services and supports comes from family caregivers with estimates reporting that family caregivers have provided $470 billion in care. Additionally, the same report cites a statistic that family caregivers aged 50 and over lose approximately $304,000 in income and benefits over the duration of their care. Consequently family caregivers are especially vulnerable to experiencing the devastating economic burdens of the provision of care. As such, the development and dissemination of training and information to improve and strengthen the financial literacy of family caregivers is paramount in efforts to help them maintain their caregiving duties while concurrently helping them better understand and prepare for the potential financial impacts associated with the provision of care. The target population to be served will be all eligible family caregivers as defined in Title III E of the Older Americans Act. The YES Initiative seeks to support projects that address the HHS priority to expand youth participation in sports and encourage regular physical activity, especially for youth populations with lower rates of sports participation and communities with limited access to athletic facilities or recreational areas. YES Initiative applicants should address unhealthy physical activity and nutrition behaviors in racial/ethnic minority and socio-economically disadvantaged youth, including specifically girls, and provide opportunities to learn skills and gain experiences that contribute to more positive lifestyles and enhance their capacity to make healthier life choices. The YES Initiative intends to identify effective collaborations and/or existing community organizational partnerships that aim to improve physical activity and nutrition by increasing sports participation of racial/ethnic minority and/or socio-economically disadvantaged youth, including specifically girls. YES Initiative projects will develop and implement sports fitness programs based on successful evidenced based practices for youth engagement, using experimental design, and result in the identification of model sustainable strategies that increase participation in range of physical activities that support a healthy lifestyle and improve the overall health among youth who, at baseline, do not meet current physical activity guidelines.

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of East Asia Pacific Affairs (EAP) announces an open competition for an environmental award of up to 246,850 to support a local and regional small-scale public health project in the Lower Mekong countries of Southeast Asia. Under the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) EAP and the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) work together to improve human health thereby promoting economic growth throughout the region. Guided by the specific objectives from the LMI 2016-2020 Master Plan of Action, this project seeks to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through the development of National AMR Resistance Action Plans. This notice solicits applications for the FY 2018 Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) hereinafter referred to as the "National HCOP Academies." The purpose of this grant program is to assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter a health profession through the development of academies that will support and guide them through the educational pipeline. Based on Section 739 of the Public Health Service Act, academies are expected to focus on: 1) promoting the recruitment of qualified individuals from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds into health professions, including allied health programs; 2) improving retention, matriculation and graduation rates by implementing tailored enrichment programs designed to address the academic and social needs of economically or educationally disadvantaged students; and 3) providing opportunities for community-based health professions training in primary care settings, emphasizing experiences in rural and underserved communities.

This Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) seeks opportunities to co-create, co-design, co-invest, and collaborate in the research, development, piloting, and scaling of innovative interventions for effectively mitigating air, water, and soil pollution, including ocean plastic pollution, electronic and other forms of solid waste in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) invites organizations, companies, academic and research institutions, and investors to propose innovative approaches for preventing and mitigating pollution in countries to promote healthier populations, cleaner environments, and inclusive, sustainable economic growth. USAID's Office of Energy and Infrastructure (E&I) within the Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment (E3/DDI), in cooperation with regional and Global Health Bureaus and selected Missions, developed this BAA for Pollution Prevention & Mitigation to improve the Agency's ability to assist partner countries in solving complex pollution problems that threaten sustainable development. This NOFO will support achievement of national targets for 2018 antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up towards the UNAIDS Fast Track Targets in Ukraine. The recipient will implement innovative and effective recruitment and case management models for persons who inject drugs (PWID) and men who have sex with men (MSM) at the community level. These innovative changes will increase uptake of HIV community based testing and increase ART initiation for these populations. The recipient will pilot risk network-based testing using point-of-care recency assays to link recently infected PWID to care. The project will focus on the six regions with the highest HIV burden (Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolayiv, Odesa, government controlled areas (GCA) of Donetsk, Kyiv City, and Kherson) and continue to work in six additional medium burden oblasts (Cherkasy, Poltava, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhya, Kirovohrad, and Kyiv). The recipient will also increase the capacity of the Government of Ukraine’s Center for Public Health (CPH) and regional monitoring and evaluation (M&E) centers specialists to conduct data analysis using statistical software and build institutional capacity to conduct economic evaluations of HIV interventions. Illustrative strategic information (SI) activities include development of trainings to support the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the newly established CPH in using statistical software, routine analysis of surveillance data, study design, and research protocol development.

Through this solicitation, we seek innovative proposals that apply the principles and frameworks of behavioral economics to persistent and perplexing health and health care problems. We hope to discover new interventions and insight that have potential to dramatically improve the way health care is delivered and health is promoted and preserved. We are particularly interested in supporting experiments that test innovative solutions to the challenge of reducing the use of low-value services in health care. This problem is particularly important given the rising costs and unaffordability of health care in the United States, but has been difficult to impact in part due to perverse incentives in a fee-for-service environment.
