Skin Cancer Foundation Issues Request for Proposals for Research Projects | RFPs | PND - 0 views

    Since its founding in 1979, the Skin Cancer Foundation has set the standard for educating the public and the medical community about skin cancer. The foundation is committed to reducing the incidence and mortality of the world's most common cancer, which is now occurring at epidemic levels. As part of this mission, the foundation is accepting proposals for its 2019 Research Grants Awards program. Two grants of $50,000 and one grant of $25,000 will be awarded to support one-year pilot research projects related to the disease. Researchers are invited to submit applications for projects to be conducted within the dermatology departments of medical institutions in the United States and Canada. The program is open to dermatology residents, fellows, and junior investigators.

     The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the research and development necessary to advance non-invasive (e.g., quantitative tomography-based) technologies, including the development of apparatus, methods, study designs, and methods of data analysis, to characterize and compare the rate and extent to which a topically applied drug becomes available at or near a site of action within the skin. The expectation is that the funded work will produce an accurate, sensitive and reproducible approach that rapidly measures the (relative) amount of drug present in the skin at a series of depths below the skin surface, which can be utilized to monitor the cutaneous pharmacokinetics (PK) of the drug at selected depths (e.g., in the epidermis and dermis) by repeated, serial measurements over time. The intent is to support the eventual development of an alternative, scientifically valid, cutaneous PK-based approach that can be used to efficiently demonstrate the bioequivalence (BE) of topical products.

    The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to advance translational research for rare musculoskeletal, rheumatic or skin diseases by supporting preclinical projects conducted by small business concerns (SBCs) to develop biomarkers and/or therapies. The 2010 Institute of Medicine Report "Rare Diseases and Orphan Products: Accelerating Research and Development" (https://www.nap.edu/read/12953/chapter/1) called for active involvement and collaboration by the public and private sectors, and emphasized the role of NIH in integrating various stake holders into a comprehensive strategy for supporting all phases of rare diseases research. NIAMS supports research on rare diseases and orphan drugs through various grant mechanisms including research project grants, center awards and training/career development awards. SBCs play an important role in disease research by developing innovative technologies and increasing the commercial application of federally supported research results. However, it can be more challenging for SBCs to achieve profitability in rare diseases research and development due to inherent scientific risks and market limitations caused by the small number of individuals affected by each disease. With this FOA, NIAMS intends to support and enhance research and development conducted by SBCs that may lead to important biomarkers and/or treatments for rare musculoskeletal, rheumatic or skin diseases.

A future clinical study may include a clinical trial or an observational study. Research data from observational studies supported by this FOA can enhance clinical study design by providing essential information about disease symptoms, stages and timing of disease progression, comorbid conditions, availability of potential research participants, and outcomes that are important to patients. They also can facilitate efforts to develop and/or validate objective biomarkers or subjective outcome measures for use in a future clinical study. Applicants to this FOA are encouraged to propose studies that address significant obstacles or questions in the design of a clinical project, such as determining the appropriate primary or secondary outcome measures, or identifying the stages of disease during which patients are most likely to respond to an intervention. Only observational studies will be supported through this FOA.

Lupus: Longitudinal Study of a Population-based Cohort - 1 views

    Purpose This FOA is intended to support research on lupus through a longitudinal study designed to follow an established, US-based., population-based cohort with lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus {SLE} and skin lupus) of all ages to determine over time: o The treatment, health care access, and natural history (severity, morbidity, mortality, etc.) of cohort members, o Factors (including genetic and other biological factors such as antibody levels) associated with these outcomes, and o The above by categories of research interest (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnic group). Knowledge of such information for lupus, which is associated with strong age/sex/race disparities and has had little public health research, can help identify missed opportunities for better treatment, help identify new disease phenotypes based on progression of disease, and help identify factors associated with progression that may play a role in secondary and tertiary prevention.

    The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) announces a program that provides NIAMS-supported K08 and K23 recipients the opportunity to apply for Small Grant (R03) support at some point during the second to fourth year of their K award. Through this FOA, the NIAMS is seeking to enhance the capability of its clinical scientists to conduct research as they complete their transition to fully independent investigator status. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects, including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology. The R03 is, therefore, intended to support research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources and that provide preliminary data to support a subsequent R01, or equivalent, application. Clinical trials of any phase will not be supported by this FOA.

    The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to stimulate clinical research that applies a social genomics approach to chronic wound risk, presence, progression, and healing. The field of social genomics focuses on how the social environment influences gene expression, and how this gene expression may in turn impact health outcomes. Chronic wounds (e.g., diabetic ulcers, venous or arterial ulcers) are multidimensional and, as such, there is benefit to a holistic approach that goes beyond a focus on the wound (i.e., repairing the skin and underlying tissue) to include an approach that focuses on the person with the wound. A better understanding of social environmental factors (positive and negative) and associated molecular mechanisms is needed to advance therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing chronic wound risk in addition to improving healing outcomes and quality of life.
