The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the Specialized Clinical Centers (hubs) of the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net). EPPIC-Net will serve as the cornerstone of the NIHs Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative. EPPIC-Net will provide a robust and readily accessible infrastructure for carrying out in depth phenotyping and biomarker studies in patients with specific pain conditions, and the rapid design and performance of high-quality Phase 2 clinical trials to test promising novel therapeutics for pain from partners in academia or industry. Studies will bring intense focus to patients with well-defined pain conditions and high unmet therapeutic needs. EPPIC-Net will consist of one Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and approximately 10 specialized clinical centers (hubs). The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the hubs within EPPIC-Net. A hub will typically be a regional medical center that will actively enroll subjects into clinical trials and studies performed in EPPIC-Net. Each hub should have ready access to patient populations with specific pain conditions and have expertise in characterization of that pain condition. A hub will additionally provide scientific leadership and administrative oversight to its multiple (2-10) satellite sites (spokes). This FOA solicits applications EPPIC-Net Specialized Clinical Centers. Separate FOAs have been issued to solicit applications for the Clinical Coordinating Center (RFA-NS-18-036) and Data Coordinating Center (RFA-NS-18-035). Clinical trials conducted through EPPIC-Net may come from a variety of sources including the HEAL Partnership, as described above, or from separate NIH funding announcements.

The Melanoma Research Foundation was originally founded in 1996 by Diana Ashby, who through the course of her own melanoma cancer treatment became disheartened at the lack of effective medical treatment options. Driven by her empathy for fellow sufferers and determined to change the trajectory of those impacted by the disease, the Melanoma Research Foundation was born. Though Diana tragically died within a year of its founding, the foundation continues to honor her memory by championing research and disseminating education around the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. In 2019, a number of research awards will be offered:   CURE Ocular Melanoma Team Award (CURE OM Team) - Grants of up to $250,000 over two years will awarded in support of research on ocular melanoma. Teams should consist of a principle investigator and at least one co-PI (ideally from different institutions). Teams consisting of both basic scientists and clinicians are encouraged, as is the inclusion of a junior scientist.

Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. More than half of smokers attempt to quit each year, but fewer than one in ten succeed. Evidence-based cessation treatments, including individual, group, and telephone counseling and seven FDA-approved cessation medications, exist, but are underutilized. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office on Smoking and Health is announcing the opportunity to apply for funds for a competitive, non-research cooperative agreement to provide technical assistance to state tobacco control programs and other partners to translate the science of tobacco control cessation into public health action in order to further increase the rate of cessation among tobacco users in the United States. The funded organizations will accomplish this by providing technical assistance to state tobacco control programs and other partners to 1) Implement health systems change initiatives that seek to integrate tobacco dependence treatment into routine clinical care, including care of persons with behavioral health conditions; and 2) Improve state quitlines' infrastructure, operations, and services to further enhance their effectiveness and efficiency, increase state quitlines' reach, especially among populations experiencing tobacco-related disparities, broaden the range of cessation services offered by state quitlines, and enhance quitline sustainability.

Breakthrough Fellowship Award supports recent doctoral or medical graduates in pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral fellowship and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Those individuals should be exceptionally talented researchers who have demonstrated that they are the "best and brightest" of their peers. Applicants for this award must exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research, with clear evidence for a researcher development plan that will lead to a successful independent career in breast cancer. Applicants must also demonstrate that the proposed research has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer.

Cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, resulting in approximately 480,000 premature deaths and 16 million smoking-related illnesses. Cigarette smoking can lead to increased cardiovascular disease, multiple types of cancer, pulmonary disease, adverse reproductive outcomes, and the exacerbation of chronic health conditions. Annual costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses amount to nearly $280 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity. Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among U.S. youth and young adults has increased considerably, growing 900% among high school students from 2011 to 2015. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 1.5 million new diagnoses and over 550,000 deaths each year. Commercial Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer and cancer deaths. It can cause not only lung cancer but also cancers of the mouth and throat, voice box, esophagus, stomach, kidney, pancreas, liver, bladder, cervix, colon and rectum, and a type of leukemia.

The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research was established in 1937 for the purpose of supporting research into the causes and treatment of cancer. The fund has taken a broad approach to the study of cell growth and development, emphasizing the study of the basic biology and chemistry of the underlying processes. It has increasingly focused its resources on the funding of three-year postdoctoral fellowships, supporting fellows selected from among the best young scientists at what is often a critical stage in their careers.

The FY19 LCRP Concept Award supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to lung cancer. The Concept Award is not intended to support an incremental progression of an already established research project but, instead, allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Applications must describe how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge of lung cancer or develop an innovative and novel course of investigation. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at Department of Defense (DoD) military treatment facilities and laboratories, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged. Research completed through a Concept Award may generate sufficient preliminary data to enable the PI to prepare an application for future research.

The Brander Beacons Cancer Research awards grants in the memory of Christopher E. Brander, the inventor of the LOCalizer™ from Health Beacons, a medical device that revolutionized the standard of care for marking breast lesions for surgical removal. BBCR works to advance its mission in four principal ways: supporting academic research institutions as they research tools and techniques that can increase the accuracy of and improve outcomes in biopsies and tumor removal procedures; identifying ways to improve patient outcomes and access; investing in emerging research and researchers; and serving as an active contributor to the culture of access and innovation in cancer care. To that end, BBCR is accepting applications from organizations doing breakthrough research focused on the prevention, treatment, and cures for breast and prostate cancer.

The annual Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Research Career Development Awards represent a joint effort to encourage and support junior faculty who have completed their most recent doctoral degree or medical residency within the past eleven years to conduct pancreatic cancer research and establish successful career paths in the field. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer.

Through the program, grants of up to $60,000 will be awarded to community-based programs and/or healthcare agencies (e.g., community health centers, cancer centers, and women's health centers) that conduct outreach, provide breast health education, and help steer medically underserved women and men to breast cancer screening services and follow-up care, as needed. Programs should educate women in their communities about breast health and encourage women to talk with a doctor or nurse to understand their individual risk of breast cancer and at what age and how often they should be screened. In addition, applicants must incorporate into their programs systems to promote the re-screening of the women served by the program. Small, community-based organizations are encouraged to apply.

The PFD Research Foundation together with the June Allyson Foundation has awarded over $1.5 million in grants to AUGS members since 1998. The Foundation serves the medical profession by supporting promising, innovative research regarding the causes, prevention, cure and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Foundation research funds are made available to qualified AUGS members to pursue their research question. Goals of this research grant program are to support the completion of research projects which will lead to publication and presentation at future AUGS Annual Scientific Meetings and to support the development of researchers in the field who will go on to obtain additional funding for future research on pelvic floor disorders. Applicants can submit proposals for the following research awards: PFD Research Foundation Fellow Research Award: A two-year grant awarded to a fellow for clinical/patient-oriented, educational, or lab-based/basic science research. PFD Research Foundation Faculty Research Award: A two-year grant awarded to a junior faculty or affiliate member for clinical/patient-oriented, educational, or lab-based/basic science research. The aim of the 2018 Bladder Cancer Research Innovation Award is to support exceptionally novel and creative projects with great potential to produce breakthroughs in our understanding or the management of bladder cancer. The proposed research may be basic, translational, or clinical but must have direct applicability and relevance to bladder cancer and address one of the questions of interest (see below). Proposals for innovative projects that will develop preliminary data necessary to prepare and submit a competitive research grant application to a major funding agency are encouraged. The award is available to full time, independent investigators who are affiliated with a non-profit academic, medical or research institution within the United States or Canada. Candidates not currently performing bladder cancer research are encouraged to apply. Proposals that involve a multidisciplinary approach and/or multi-institutional collaboration are encouraged. The award is for $300,000 over two years ($150,000 per year) for direct research expenses, which may include salary and benefits for postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, and/or research assistants; research/lab supplies; and equipment. The second year of funding is dependent on approval after a one year progress report has been submitted and reviewed by BCAN.

The FY18 LCRP Career Development Award supports early-career, independent investigators to conduct impactful research under the mentorship of an experienced lung cancer researcher as an opportunity to obtain the funding, mentoring, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of lung cancer research. This award is intended to support impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at Department of Defense (DoD) military treatment facilities and laboratories, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged.

Projects must be designed to accelerate the application of new preventive, diagnostic or therapeutic approaches to the clinic (i.e., lead to patient involvement within 2-3 years from the beginning of the grant). Proposals for Dream Team research projects must present plans indicating how the work will be translated into the clinic. The ideas should be based on perceived opportunities for success as well as high-priority areas with a critical need for rapid progress beyond current medical care.

Applications should include a well- formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.
