The ADDF seeks to support comparative effectiveness research, prevention clinical trials, and epidemiological studies that probe whether the use or choice of drugs alters the risk for dementia or cognitive decline. Specifically, the Prevention Beyond the Pipeline RFP supports: * Studies Leveraging the Consortium of Cohorts for Alzheimer's Prevention Action (CAPA) * Comparative Effectiveness Research: Methods may include randomized trials or epidemiology. * Studies of Cognitive Decline and Cognitive Reserve: Methods may include epidemiology or clinical trials. Current target areas of interest include: - Epigenetics - Inflammation - Mitochondria & metabolic function - Neuroprotection - Proteostasis - Synaptic activity and neurotransmitters - Vascular function - Other aging targets (e.g. senescent cells) - Other novel targets or pathways that are supported by compelling evidence demonstrating a rational biological connection to age-related cognitive decline or dementia risk   

This initiative aims to: (1) enhance our understanding of the multi-level factors that influence HIV prevention strategy use among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa and (2) develop and test novel interventions to address these factors and enhance the uptake and adherence to HIV prevention strategies among AGYW in sub-Saharan Africa.  The goal of this initiative is to look at the multiple levels of influence on AGYW's behavior from the individual level, to her partners, family members and peers as well as cultural, social norms and structural factors that may influence uptake and adherence to prevention strategies.     

The purpose of this FOA is to reduce the overall burden of neglected parasitic infections (NPIs) in the United States through evidence-based prevention and control activities including the development of new strategies, educational tools and materials, and guidelines. NPIs are a group of five parasitic diseases that have been targeted by the CDC as priorities for public health action based on the number of people infected, severity of the illnesses, and the ability to prevent and treat them. They are: Chagas disease, neurocysticercosis, toxocariasis, toxoplasmosis, and trichomoniasis. These educational tools and materials and guidelines developed will be used to improve NPI related preventive health knowledge and practices, improve recognition of signs and symptoms of NPIs, increase availability of best approaches and recommendations, improve availability of education training tools and materials, enhance capacity for public education on NPIs, and enhance capacity in the identification of NPIs. Successful strategies should have the potential to yield high impact public health outcomes, reach a high proportion of those at risk, and have the highest potential for significant impact on population health.

The ultimate goal of the FOA is to develop the knowledge base necessary to design selective preventive interventions that could be administered efficiently and safely to the general population or to individuals at risk of autoimmune disease, including infants and children.

As a key activity, INL promotes the development of substance use disorder studies programs at universities around the world to further develop a trained professional workforce for prevention, treatment and recovery programs. In addition, INL encourages applied research to assess the effectiveness of drug demand reduction efforts, advocates government and community support for evidence based drug demand reduction programs, and fosters the development of a worldwide network including professionals and academic experts focused on drug use. The purpose of this project is to promote the creation and networking of substance use disorder studies researchers and programs in universities in Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, Africa and Eastern Europe. The recipient will also support existing drug use studies programs with technical assistance and mentoring of program directors. In addition, the recipients will advocate for government use of evidence based substance use disorder prevention programs and treatment as well as work towards applied research to advance the substance use disorder field for prevention, treatment and recovery.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) proposes to allocate funds to implement Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) PS18-1807, “Promoting Adolescent Health through School-Based HIV/STD Prevention.” The project period will be 5 years, with a 12-month budget period and an anticipated award date of August 1, 2018. This NOFO will provide support for education agencies and NGOs to help school districts and schools develop and implement sustainable program activities to: 1) Reduce HIV infection and other STDs among adolescents; and 2) Reduce disparities in risk for HIV infection and other STD infection. Throughout the 5-year cooperative agreement, awardees will conduct activities demonstrated to improve the health of middle school and high school students by collection and use of quality surveillance data, the implementation of effective prevention practices, and demonstration and evaluation of innovative strategies within their jurisdictions.

The U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) are comprised of the three U.S. territories of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam, as well as the three sovereign nations of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.The public health care systems in these remote islands require assistance to improve the infrastructure, capacity, and local expertise to prevent HIV in high-risk populations and to effectively address the high burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), tuberculosis (TB), and viral hepatitis (VH) in their jurisdictions. Additionally, laboratory capacity is limited, surveillance systems are fragmented, and provision of health care is challenging and costly due to the vast geographic distances and broadly dispersed population throughout islands across the Pacific Ocean. This integrated Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is supported by the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) and aims to:Promote program collaboration and services integration to capitalize on the opportunity to diagnose, treat, and prevent HIV, STD, TB, and VH in persons with similar risk factors.Improve collection, sharing, reporting, analysis, interpretation, and use of surveillance data.

This program seeks to advance knowledge in this specific area of prematurity research. The March of Dimes seeks applications requesting grant support for projects related to cause[s] (etiology) of normal labor and preterm labor. The intent is to provide new insights into preventing preterm births; in most cases the cause (and thus potential prevention) remains elusive. Emphasis is upon proposals using technology of or encompassing contemporary technologies of genetic, molecular biology and gene-environment interactions. Especially encouraged are proposals from established investigators heretofore not involved in prematurity prevention research and wishing to enter the prematurity domain.

The current FOA aims to support HIV preventive interventions in Mozambique targeting KP and OVP in provinces of Mozambique characterized by high prevalence of HIV, rapid development and increasing number of multinational companies, transport corridor areas, high mobility and transient male workforce, increased tourism, and increased HIV risk from commercial sex work and transactional sex, which together constitute some of the main factors driving the epidemic in Mozambique. A successful FOA respondent will support the adoption of combination prevention approaches targeting behavioral, biomedical, and structural interventions to ensure effective reach and impact on target population. Interventions aim to increase knowledge of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among KP and other priority populations, reduce sexual risk behavior, increase knowledge and access to preventive commodities among target population. Interventions will also promote HIV testing and counseling (HTC) and create demand for the uptake of HTC services by KP and OVC, increase access to HIV, STI and tuberculosis (TB) services in addition to other health care services, and support access to universal coverage of HIV treatment for all eligible PLHIV within KP and OVP.

The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) invites applications for its Distinguished Innovator Awards, a global program that will provide outstanding scientists with substantial support for up to four years to conduct novel research into the fundamental causes of lupus and so provide new directions toward a cure or prevention.   Advances across many disciplines have led to novel treatments that aim to suppress the manifestations of lupus. Yet few interventions are being developed that seek to reverse or prevent the disease. LRI Distinguished Innovators will address this gap by pioneering research into the fundamental, causative pathways of lupus. In pursuit of this goal, the LRI welcomes novel, hypothesis- or discovery-driven proposals in human and/or animal model based lupus research. The research proposal must aim to uncover the fundamental causes of lupus and present a compelling vision of how the discovery would lay the groundwork for a potential cure, prevention, or highly effective therapy.

The NIDA Avant-Garde Award Program for HIV/AIDS Research supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose high-impact research that will open new areas of HIV/AIDS research and/or lead to new avenues for prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS among drug abusers.  The term "avant-garde" is used to describe highly innovative approaches that have the potential to be transformative.  The proposed research should reflect approaches and ideas that are substantially different from those already being pursued by the investigator or others.  The NIDA Avant-Garde award supports innovative, basic research that may lead to improved preventive interventions or therapies; creative, new strategies to prevent disease transmission; novel approaches to improve disease outcomes; and creative approaches to eradicating HIV or improving the lives of those living with HIV.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications that seek to apply one or more innovative methodologies in communication research across the cancer control continuum, from prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, to end of life. Applications to this FOA should utilize one or more of the following analytic approaches, methods, and data sources, including but not limited to social media data mining, Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, online social network analysis, crowdsourcing research tools (e.g., mTurk), online search data, Ecological Momentary Assessment, neuroscience and biobehavioral approaches to communication, and geographic information systems. The ever-changing patterns of globally mobile populations and the incidence and prevalence of disease in these populations are important factors in monitoring, preventing, and controlling disease importation and/or spread in U.S. populations. A better understanding of the scope and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases in globally mobile populations is needed in order to improve public health practices and interventions aimed at preventing illness in refugees, immigrants, travelers and domestic populations. The mission of the MHRP is to protect military personnel from HIV and other emerging infectious diseases and improve global health by conducting research to develop vaccines, prevent new infections, and find cures.
