NIJ seeks proposals for research and evaluation projects to identify the combination of attributes specific to the individual law enforcement officer that causes them to make the decisions governing their actions during encounters with the public. Specifically, NIJ is interested in identifying those combinations of attributes tending to lead to successful encounter outcomes; as well as those tending to lead to unsuccessful outcomes. NIJ is also interested in understanding how the outcomes associated with a specific combination of attributes may differ based on the type of encounter; including understanding how the importance of specific attributes may vary based on the type of encounter.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for short-term mentored career development (K18) awards that improve synergies among researchers in basic and applied behavioral-social sciences, human subjects and model animals settings; and biomedical and behavioral-social sciences. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, or a clinical trial feasibility study, as part of their research and career development. Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial, or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to companion FOA, PAR-18-349.

Stress can result in sleep disruption due to both psychological as well as physiological changes. Sleep disruption can result in physiological changes; however, individuals may not recognize or identify impairment due to sleep disruption. This initiative supports the development of research teams to understand how basic individual, social, biological, and environmental factors interact in a dynamic relationship between sleep patterns and psychosocial stress to influence health, wellness, disease, and/or treatment adherence.

The Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching will support rising stars in the academy who love teaching, demonstrate excellence as educators, and are making their mark as exceptional researchers, poised to shape their fields. Designed for young scholars working towards tenure, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship is a "genius grant" that will emphasize the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. In short, Fellows will be emerging heroes in their fields, on a clear trajectory to become great college educators. In its inaugural year, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship will identify five outstanding junior faculty members. Fellows will receive a one-year grant of $40,000-approximately $30,000 to support the engagement of a student assistant and the balance to be used for research and travel support. Exceptional candidates teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different learning styles; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators. Selection takes place in June 2018. The five Fellows will be invited to attend the Course Hero Education Summit in July 2018, where their Fellowships will be announced.

NIJ is seeking research and evaluation related to hate crime perpetration and victimization. The purpose of this solicitation is to support research and evaluation to: 1) understand the motivations and pathways to hate crime offending; 2) determine whether programs targeted at hate crime offenders are effective at reducing reoffending; 3) determine whether programs that work with victims of hate crimes and their communities are effective at reducing the harms caused by hate crimes; and 4) provide information that will improve investigative and prosecutorial outcomes. Other proposals that address research related to hate crimes will be considered.

NIJ is seeking applications for research and program evaluation projects that inform efforts to reduce street gang activity and violence in the United States. Gangs and gang members are responsible for a large amount of crime and violence in many localities, and are responsible for a disproportionate share in those communities most afflicted by crime and violence. NIJ will support scientifically rigorous research and evaluation projects designed to produce findings with high practical utility for gang prevention, intervention, enforcement, or reentry strategies. This solicitation supports the U.S. Department of Justice priority to prevent and reduce crime.

The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) announces the availability of administrative supplements to support interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research focused on the effect of sex/gender influences at the intersection of a number of social determinants, including but not limited to: race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education, health literacy and other social determinants in human health and illness. This research includes preclinical, clinical and behavioral studies with the specific purpose to provide Administrative Supplements to active NIH parent grants for one year to address health disparities among women of populations in the US who are understudied, underrepresented and underreported in biomedical research.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support observational or intervention research focused on reducing health disparities in tobacco use in the United States. Specifically, this FOA is intended to stimulate scientific inquiry focused on innovative tobacco control policies. Applicants may propose projects in which the primary outcome of interest is on reducing tobacco use health disparities in vulnerable populations by utilizing tobacco prevention and control strategies. The long-term goal of this FOA is to reduce health disparities in health outcomes thereby reducing the excess disease burden of tobacco use within these groups. Applicants submitting applications related to health economics are encouraged to consult NOT-OD-16-025 to ensure that applications align with NIH mission priorities in health economics research. This FOA utilizes the Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) mechanism, which supports investigation of novel scientific ideas or new model systems, tools, or technologies that have the potential for significant impact on biomedical or biobehavioral research. An R21 grant application need not have extensive background material or preliminary information.

NIJ is seeking rigorous research to evaluate promising practices and strategies that aim to promote effective management and supervision of offenders in both institutions and in the community. Specifically, NIJ is interested in receiving proposals for research and evaluation focused on: * Reducing violence and misconduct. * Provision of medical and mental health services. NIJ is particularly interested in receiving proposals addressing these topics in the context of jails, community corrections, and rural and tribal correctional systems. Every correctional setting has a unique operating environment and challenges. Yet jails, community corrections, and rural and tribal correction systems have received limited empirical attention relative to the number of jurisdictions they serve and the critical functions they provide in the delivery of correctional services. The research resulting from this solicitation supports the U.S. Department of Justice's priorities to reduce violent crime and to protect police and other public safety personnel.

The Drug-Free Communities Support Program provides grants to community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth, which will ultimately reduce substance abuse among adults. The application deadline is March 29, 2018.

This initiative will support projects that exploit Omics assays to address outstanding questions regarding molecular regulation of persistent HIV (e.g. latency or reservoirs) in the context of chronic substance use or substance use disorder (SUD).

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to seek applications on novel genetic mechanisms underlying the development of tolerance and the progression to alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorders are complex, multifactorial, and influenced both by genetic and environmental factors. The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate and support efforts on identifying genetic, genomic and epigenetic factors contributing to the development of sensitivity and tolerance to alcohol.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage UG3/UH3 phased cooperative agreement research applications to plan and implement behavioral and social intervention clinical trials. Studies appropriate for this announcement include traditional clinical trials to develop and test behavior change interventions for preventing and treating dental, oral, or craniofacial conditions, as well as interventions that are used as tools to understand mechanisms of behavior change. Awards made under this FOA will initially support a milestone-driven planning phase (UG3) for up to 2 years, with possible transition to a clinical trial implementation phase of up to five years (UH3).

Of special interest are studies relevant to understanding the significance of biological sex on cells and tissue explants; comparative studies of male and female tissues, organ systems and physiological systems; sex-based comparisons of pathophysiology, biomarkers, gene expression, clinical presentation and prevention and treatment of diseases. The most robust experimental designs include consideration of both sex and gender; therefore, applications proposing to investigate the influence of both sex and gender factors are highly encouraged. The proposed research must address at least one objective from Goals 1 through 3 of the NIH Strategic Plan for Women's Health Research.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement is intended to foster the development of a diverse and highly trained workforce of endocrinologists to assume leadership roles related to the Nations biomedical and behavioral research efforts in the area of type 1 diabetes (T1D). T1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs in both children and adults. Therefore, the NIDDK will award physician scientist career development program (K12) grants to eligible institutions to provide a program to prepare adult and/or pediatric endocrinologists, selected by the institution, for careers in basic or clinical research related to T1D. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Enhancement and Expansion of Treatment and Recovery Services for Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and their Families grant program (Short Title: Youth and Family TREE). The purpose of this program is to enhance and expand comprehensive treatment, early intervention, and recovery support services for adolescents (ages 12-18), transitional aged youth (ages 16-25), and their families/primary caregivers with substance use disorders (SUD) and/or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders.
