The Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) are accepting applications for Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program grants. By statute, the DFC Support Program has two goals: Establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, as well as federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth*. Reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.

Enhanced Training And Services To End Abuse In Later Life Program (Abuse in Later Life) provides or enhances training and services to address elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, including domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking, involving victims who are 50 years of age or older. In FY 2017, OVW will fund projects that will focus on providing training to assist criminal justice and other professionals in recognizing and addressing instances of elder abuse; providing services for older victims of abuse in later life; and supporting multidisciplinary collaborative community responses to victims of abuse in later life.

The Center(s) will conduct innovative and high quality research including: 1) trials testing the efficacy and effectiveness of clinical interventions; 2) longitudinal prospective studies examining the long term effects of specific and understudied types of maltreatment including abusive head trauma, medical child abuse and neglect, chronic sexual abuse; 3) studies examining the neurobiology of abuse and neglect and implications for health outcomes; and 4) studies testing the development of screening tools and clinical assessment measures for early identification and treatment of specific types of abuse and neglect to decrease morbidity and mortality and to identify potential comorbidities.

In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Charles Koch Foundation seeks to support research projects (e.g. papers, conferences, workshops, etc.) that explore innovative, community-based solutions that are targeted at destroying the root causes of substance abuse. To that end, we are actively soliciting proposals for projects to consider innovative solutions that seek to alleviate substance use disorders. We are especially interested in research that: - Addresses innovative ways to help individuals overcome substance use disorders, prevent drug overdoses, and increase the willingness of individuals to seek treatment for substance abuse. - Explores the root causes of addiction and substance use disorders as well as innovative means to prevent substance abuse by remedying these root causes. - Addresses the unintended consequences of current approaches to reduce drug overdoses and substance abuse. - Examines solutions that offer a proactive approach to fighting addiction rather than a reactive approach focusing on treatment and recovery. - Explores opportunities to reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorders and celebrate success in overcoming addiction and substance abuse.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage behavioral intervention development research to test efficacy, conduct clinical trials, examine mechanisms of behavior change, determine dose-response, treatment optimization, and/or ascertain best sequencing of behavioral, combined, sequential, or integrated behavioral and pharmacological (1) drug abuse treatment interventions, including interventions for patients with comorbidities; (2) drug abuse treatment and adherence interventions; (3) drug abuse treatment and adherence interventions that utilize technologies to boost effects and increase implementability and sustainability; (4) interventions to prevent the acquisition or transmission of HIV infection among individuals in drug abuse treatment; (5) interventions to promote adherence to drug abuse treatment, HIV and addiction medications; and (6) interventions to treat substance misuse and chronic pain. Research of interest includes but is not limited to Stage I research.

Research of interest includes but is not limited to Stage II and Stage III efficacy research.

 The National Institute on Drug Abuse supported a number of HIV/AIDS cohorts among substance abusing populations. These cohorts address emerging and high priority research on HIV/AIDS. These longitudinal cohorts serve as a strong resource platform for current and future collaborative efforts with other investigators to address emerging questions related to HIV infection, prevention, and treatment in the context of substance abuse, as well as to foster the creativity and efficiency of investigator-initiated research. Accomplishments by the NIDA-funded cohorts have been highly significant. Four of these cohorts (see below) will be terminated within a year if continued support is not provided. Therefore, the purpose of this Limited Competition Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the maintenance and expansion of these NIDA-funded cohorts to continue to address new emerging and/or high priority research on multidisciplinary aspects of HIV/AIDS and substance abuse.

The purpose of this program is to demonstrate how telehealth programs and networks can improve access to health care services, particularly substance abuse treatment services, in rural, frontier, and underserved communities. The range and use of telehealth services have expanded over the past decades, along with the role of technology in improving and coordinating care. Telehealth has proven capabilities to reduce travel time, increase access to specialty care, and improve patient safety, quality of care, and provider support. Traditional models of telehealth involve care delivered to the patient at a series of originating (or spoke) sites from a specialist working at a distant (or hub) site. Telehealth is a promising tool for providing substance abuse treatment services and support to rural populations. Communities that lack sufficient substance abuse treatment and other behavioral health professionals can utilize telehealth technologies to increase access to care.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) invites applications to evaluate the cumulative and progressive effects on brain structure and cognitive/behavioral function of combined HIV infection and alcohol abuse. This project has recruited and longitudinally tracked a large cohort of individuals with HIV infection, or alcohol abuse, or the comorbid condition. As members of this cohort are growing older and living well longer due to antiretroviral medications, this project is well suited to address several questions of current interest in the HIV-AIDS research community. These questions include the effects of coinfection with the Hepatitis C virus, the involvement of peripheral neuropathy as a factor in frailty, potential neurotoxic effects of antiretroviral medications, and interactive effects with advancing age on sensory and motor functioning.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to study the developing brain or brain areas that play significant roles in mediating emotional and motivated behavior and in substance use and dependence. All stages of brain development are of interest, but a new emphasis of the current reissue of this initiative is to support basic neuroscience research on fundamental mechanisms of brain development during prepuberty and the adolescent period in relation to the problems of substance abuse and co-morbidity with psychiatric disorders. Topics of interest pertaining to brain development of this initiative include, but are not limited to, the euphoric properties of abused substances, actions of psychotherapeutic agents, and their consequences on memory, cognitive and emotional processes. An additional major goal of this initiative is to understand how exposure to substances of abuse affects the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying nervous system development and neural circuit functions implicated in substance use and addiction.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for research Centers that (1) conduct drug abuse and addiction research in any area of NIDA's mission, (2) have outstanding innovative science, (3) are multidisciplinary, thematically integrated, synergistic, and (4) serve as national resource(s) to provide educational and outreach activities to drug abuse research communities, educational organizations, the general public, and policy makers in the NIDA research fields It is expected that a Center will transform knowledge in the sciences it is studying. Incremental work should not be the focus of Center activities; rather, new and creative directions are required. The P50 Center of Excellence is expected to foster the career development and mentoring of new investigators who would be given meaningful roles to play in the Center projects. A goal of this program is to create NIDA Centers that are national community resources for furthering drug abuse research by sharing their findings, their data, and their resources as appropriate for researchers to use and build upon and to advance research in this field

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in substance abuse and addiction research.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) invites applications to evaluate the cumulative and progressive effects on brain structure and cognitive/behavioral function of combined HIV infection and alcohol abuse on older patients cohorts.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Enhancement and Expansion of Treatment and Recovery Services for Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and their Families grant program (Short Title: Youth and Family TREE). The purpose of this program is to enhance and expand comprehensive treatment, early intervention, and recovery support services for adolescents (ages 12-18), transitional aged youth (ages 16-25), and their families/primary caregivers with substance use disorders (SUD) and/or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages collaborative research applications on drug abuse and addiction that take advantage of special opportunities that exist outside the United States. Special opportunities include access to unusual talent, resources, populations, or environmental conditions in other countries that will speed scientific discovery. Projects should have relevance to the mission of NIDA and where feasible should address NIDA's international scientific priority areas (http://www.drugabuse.gov/international/research-priorities). While the priorities will change from year to year, in FY15 priority areas include: linkages between HIV/AIDS and drug abuse; prevention, initiation, and treatment of nicotine and tobacco use (especially among vulnerable populations such as children, adolescents, pregnant women, and those with co-morbid disorders); the neuroscience of marijuana and cannabinoids; and the effect of changes in laws and policies on marijuana and its impact.

The Ohio Opioid Abuse, Prevention and Treatment Technology Initiative is to accelerate the development and commercialization of promising new products (or adaptations or modifications) in the categories of medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and health technology.  They should meaningfully address one or more issues associated with the drug crisis driven by use, misuse, abuse and the addictive potential of opioids. Specifically, projects must contribute to near term tangible solutions associated with addiction prevention, treatment and overdose intervention. Technology and products that enable safe and effective treatment of acute and chronic pain without the use of opioids are encouraged. 

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support pilot, feasibility or exploratory research in 5 priority areas in substance use epidemiology and health services, including: 1) responses to sudden and severe emerging drug issues (e.g. the ability to look into a large and sudden spike in synthetic cannabinoid use/overdoses in a particular community); 2) responses to emerging marijuana trends and topics related to the shifting policy landscape; 3) responses to unexpected and time-sensitive prescription drug abuse research opportunities (e.g.,new state or local efforts); 4) responses to unexpected and time-sensitive medical system issues (e.g. opportunities to understand addiction services in the evolving health care system); and 5) responses to unexpected and time-sensitive criminal or juvenile justice opportunities (e.g. new system and/or structural level changes) that relate to drug abuse and access and provision of health care service. It should be clear that the knowledge gained from the proposed study is time-sensitive and that an expedited rapid review and funding are required in order for the scientific question to be answered.
