Engaging in policy and advocacy is essential to building healthy communities. As communities work on age-friendly ideas that are relevant to them, the Foundation will support efforts that are inclusive, collaborative, address quality of life, and improve conditions for all across the lifespan. One aging framework we use is that of the World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities initiative. Policy and Advocacy initiatives we will consider recognize the essential components that make up community wellbeing. They include: - Built environment - Transportation - Housing - Social and civic participation and inclusion - Employment - Communication and information - Community support and health services Proposals should include: * Community/civic engagement of diverse stakeholders in communities to mobilize and affect change * Participation among key stakeholders, including the voice of older adults, to support planning, policy and advocacy initiatives * Expanded access to programs and services as well as system change/improvement

This Research Fund is opening a call for projects in the following areas: * Protecting vulnerable populations from epidemics and catastrophes, including COVID-19: be it migrants, informal settlements, workers in the informal economy, isolated people, people with disabilities, the elderly * Improving data collection and quality in health: how can data and technology help us get out of the crisis, understand it and mitigate it? How can it inform future containment and epidemic control? * Understanding the effects of confinement and social distancing: what are the effects of confinement and social distancing on society and households? What are the mental health consequences? The social and domestic repercussions? * Early warning and preparedness: how do we re-enforce our health infrastructure and ecosystem (including medical devices and drug supply) to be better prepared and how do we protect our health workers and caregivers? * Preserving the environment and our health: connections between climate change, biodiversity loss and the origin of viral disease including socioeconomic dynamics leading to infectious disease outbreaks and sanitary crisis; Learnings from COVID-19 for mitigating future related crises in climate and biodiversity

The Reducing Injury and Death of Missing Individuals with Dementia and Developmental Disabilities Program supports local jurisdictions’ efforts to reduce the number of deaths and injuries of individuals with forms of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease or developmental disabilities such as autism who, due to their condition, wander from safe environments. It provides funding to law enforcement and public safety agencies to implement locative technologies to track missing individuals; and to such agencies and partnering nonprofit organizations to develop or operate programs to prevent wandering, increase individuals’ safety, and facilitate rescues.

The overall goal of this FOA is to support the development of a collaborative research and resource network to synergize the expertise, skills, and resources of investigators within the geriatric emergency medicine and Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) research communities to identify and address research gaps towards optimizing recognition and emergency care of older adults with AD/ADRD. Support is provided for up to 2 years of planning/development (R61 phase) of a milestone-driven infrastructure including the initial identification of top-priority research gaps and the establishment of strategies to address them. Areas identified as needing additional evidence-based research include, but are not limited to, pre-emergency department (ED) strategies to avoid non-emergency ED visits, recognition of early cognitive impairment in the ED, strategies to optimize the ED environment and providers for patients with AD/ADRD, development of safe disposition criteria, and methods to minimize system fragmentation within and across health and social services.

Research shows that diverse teams working together and capitalizing on innovative ideas and distinct perspectives outperform homogenous teams. Scientists and trainees from diverse backgrounds and life experiences bring different perspectives, creativity, and individual enterprise to address complex scientific problems. Established in 1986, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association represents the specialty of palliative nursing and provides support for the profession through education programs, research initiatives, and advocacy. In support of this mission, the association is accepting applications for its HPNF Certification Research Grant. Studies done in the acute-care setting suggest that care environments with a higher proportion of certified nurses have better patient outcomes. Replicating this research in the hospice or palliative care environment has potential to advance the understanding of the value of palliative nursing certification. Through the program, a single grant of up to $15,000 will be awarded to an exploratory, pilot, or feasibility study with the potential to lead to a larger-scale project that can help build a better understanding of the impact of palliative nursing certification on patient outcomes.

The Tufts Health Plan Foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry from nonprofit organizations for projects that champion communities as they improve the quality of life for all citizens across the lifespan. The foundation will consider policy/advocacy projects in the areas of built environment, transportation, housing, social and civic participation and inclusion, employment, communication and information, and community support and health services. Projects should be collaborative and involve participants from all community arenas, with a focus on policy and advocacy activities that move communities toward age-friendly status.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to encourage collaborations between the life and physical sciences that: 1) apply a multidisciplinary bioengineering approach to the solution of a biomedical problem; and 2) integrate, optimize, validate, translate or otherwise accelerate the adoption of promising tools, methods and techniques for a specific research or clinical problem in basic, translational, or clinical science and practice. An application may propose design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven research and is appropriate for small teams applying an integrative approach to increase our understanding of and solve problems in biological, clinical or translational science.

The functionality of the NeuroImaging Tools and Resources Collaboratory (NITRC) has enabled three distinct components to flourish: Resources Registry (NITRC-R): a collaboratory enabling the distribution, enhancement, and adoption of neuroimaging tools and resources. Image Repository (NITRC-IR): a curated repository of free neuroimaging datasets meeting global standards. Computational Environment (NITRC-CE): a freely downloadable or pay-as-you-go virtual computing cloud-based platform that is pre-configured with popular neuroimaging tools. NITRC-R has become the major web-based collaborative Environment enabling the distribution, enhancement, and adoption of neuroinformatics resources. It currently hosts more than 1,000 tools and resources in areas such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), optical imaging, positron emission tomography/single-photon emission computed tomography (PET/SPECT), electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography/electrocorticography (EEG/MEG/ECoG), computational neuroscience, and imaging genomics. Since NITRC's inception, there have been more than 10 million total downloads of tools from NITRC-R.

The goal of the GEMSSTAR program is to provide support for early-career physician-scientists trained in medical or surgical specialties or early-career dentist-scientists to launch careers as future leaders in aging- or geriatric-focused research. To achieve this goal, the GEMSSTAR FOA provides small grants to conduct transdisciplinary aging research that will yield pilot data and experience for subsequent aging research projects. The GEMSSTAR program also encourages candidates to seek out a supportive research environment to achieve the program's goal of fostering the development of early-career physician- and dentist-scientists in aging- or geriatric-focused research, particularly as it applies to their clinical specialty/discipline. In selecting GEMSSTAR awardees, NIA will consider the extent to which a candidate's environment is supportive of aging- or geriatric-focused research.

Applications will be accepted from academic investigators and small companies with lead candidate therapeutic agents that require early stage testing prior to Proof of Concept (POC) Phase 2 or 3 efficacy studies, or with lead therapeutic agents that have already established human safety data and require a small-scale pilot Proof of Mechanism (POM) study in humans to begin proving the scientific concept in humans. This award will support Phase 1 studies or pilot small- scale Phase 2a studies for repurposed drugs in normal individuals or individuals with preclinical or symptomatic Alzheimer's disease (i.e. early human studies to set the stage for efficacy studies), including single and multiple dose studies to establish safety, brain penetration and/or target engagement and POM in preparation for larger proof of concept trials. In addition, proposals may be considered that are POC to validate biological marker(s) of disease progression in a clinical trial environment. Any proposal must have a clear focus on Alzheimer's disease and related disorder and be translational in nature. All proposals should clearly and explicitly outline the measure to be investigated, the methods for study, and outcomes. Researchers from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to stimulate clinical research addressing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and the association of BPSD with unmet physical, social, or environmental needs in persons with dementia.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage interdisciplinary research aimed at promoting health, preventing and limiting symptoms and disease, and reducing health disparities across the lifespan for those living or spending time in non-traditional settings (i.e. playgrounds and nursing homes). These settings result in exposure to environmental pollutants and toxins that result in health risks, symptoms, and other health conditions/diseases; including lower respiratory disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and complex environmental exposures that may be exacerbated by non-chemical stressors encountered in community settings, physiological function of organs and systems of the fetus/child/adolescence, and lower respiratory disease. Risk identification and symptom management include prevention and behavior changes and actions to maintain health and prevent disease with an emphasis on the individual, family, and community which will advance nursing science. For purposes of this FOA, non-traditional settings include, but are not limited to, places such as community centers; pre-school and non-traditional school environments (e.g., churches, daycare, home-based schools, dormitories, alternative schools, and playgrounds); child and older adult foster care facilities; older adult day care facilities; half-way homes; and assisted living and long-term care facilities.

The Communities Building Healthier Environments for a Stronger Nation Initiative ('Communities Initiative') intends to demonstrate the effectiveness of community-based networks in improving health outcomes among racial and ethnic minority and/or other disadvantaged populations. This program seeks to improve health outcomes through the establishment of integrated networks that collaboratively employ evidence-based disease management and preventive health activities; build the capacity of communities to address social determinants and barriers to healthcare access; and increase access to and utilization of preventive health care, medical treatment, and supportive services. The Communities Initiative specifically targets the unmet healthcare and supportive service needs of racial and ethnic minority populations at highest risk for poorer health outcomes. Health services provided under the Communities Initiative will not be denied to any person based on race, color, or national origin. Populations at highest risk include, but are not limited to, individuals who are newly diagnosed and lack a medical home; individuals who experience difficulty in adhering to a prescribed medical treatment plan; individuals with a chronic disease that is not well managed; and individuals that are unstably housed. Specific health areas to be addressed by the Communities Initiative include asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B or C, obesity/overweight, and mental disorders. Community health programs are required to address social determinants of health, and improve coordination of health, social, and supportive services to significantly improve health outcomes among minority and/or disadvantaged communities. Applicants must choose two but no more than three chronic conditions

The Centers of Excellence on Environmental Health Disparities (EHD) research program is a collaborative effort supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that encourages basic, biological, clinical, epidemiological, behavioral and/or social scientific investigations of disease conditions that are known to be a significant burden in low socioeconomic and health disparate populations. The centers define Environmental health disparities as inequities in illnesses that are mediated by disproportionate exposures associated with the social, natural and built Environments. The kick-off meeting will feature presentations from each of the five funded centers highlighting their proposed research.
