Inadequate end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) health literacy is a significant barrier to receiving high-quality care for individuals living with serious, advanced illnesses. Palliative care includes patient and family-centered care that seeks to anticipate, prevent, relieve or reduce disease-related symptoms across the continuum of a patient's illness. Palliative care may integrate the emotional, psychological, social, and physical aspects of care with a focus on enhanced quality of life. Historically, palliative care referred to treatment available to patients at home and enrolled in hospice. More recently, palliative care has become available to acutely ill patients and its meaning has evolved to encompass comprehensive care that may be provided along with disease-specific, life-prolonging treatment. End-of-life care refers to care that meets the patient's medical, physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs when facing an advanced, life-limiting illness. Hospice care is an end-of-life care delivery system that emphasizes comfort through symptom management and psychosocial support without life-prolonging treatment, to enhance the quality of life, increase communication, and decrease care burden for both patients with a limited life expectancy and their families. The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications for the AD/ADRD Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory ("Collaboratory", henceforth) to improve care for persons with dementia (PWD) and their caregivers through health systems. Health and long-term systems for this FOA are defined broadly and include organizations providing care across settings to include primary and specialty outpatient care, acute inpatient care, skilled nursing and other rehabilitation facilities, residential long-term care, and home and community-based services. Organizations may be traditional health care systems (e.g., health maintenance organizations, or HMOs), health insurance companies, managed care plans, home health care providers, memory clinics, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, outpatient clinics, federally-designated health centers, hospitals, and other providers of acute and long-term care.

This FOA invites Research and Development Center (P30) grant applications in demography, economics and health services research relevant to Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Related Dementias (AD/ADRD). Areas of focus that are especially encouraged are: a) national and international population trends in cognitive aging and AD/ADRD; b) demography of dementia care and caregiving; c) economic burden of AD/ADRD; d) impact of health care systems and long-term supports and services on outcomes for persons with dementia and their care providers; e) impact of health care financing policies on outcomes for persons with dementia and their care providers; f) how regulatory and economic incentives affect access, quality and health outcomes in health and long-term care systems for persons with dementia; g) disparities in quality and access to dementia care; h) effects of population-level health delivery and care interventions on outcomes of persons with dementia; and i) national and international projections of dementia caseload, incidence and prevalence. Center grant applications must include two mandatory Cores and may choose among three optional Cores. Centers are required to work collaboratively with the Coordinating Center to be funded via RFA-AG-20-003.  

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, of higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used. AHRQ's Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS) works to ensure patient safety in multiple settings with recent efforts to increase the development of processes including measures, metrics, tools and practices to increase patient safety in the ambulatory care setting and long term care facilities. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will fund large research demonstration and implementation projects that pertain to ambulatory care settings and long term care facilities with a focus on implementing evidence-based processes to improve patient safety, especially those involving transitions in care. AHRQ is interested in studies in these two settings that develop, utilize, and evaluate strategies to implement existing measures, metrics, tools or practices that have already been validated and have been shown to be efficacious in improving patient safety sites.

The goal of the Hillman Innovations in Care Program is to advance leading edge, nursing-driven models of care that will improve the health and health care of vulnerable populations, including the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, the homeless, rural populations, and other groups that encounter barriers to accessing quality health care services. This program provides funding for health-related research projects that can improve the quality of care and the quality of life for adults who are 65 year or older and who are long term residents living in nursing homes, assisted living, and other congregate care facilities. This program requires researchers to rely on existing datasets to address the research question they seek to answer. Limited collection of new data is allowed in this program if it will enhance the utility of the project outcomes to improve quality in care facilities. Researchers applying for this grant must include a stakeholder in the care delivery or policy arena with whom they will collaborate and who is willing to work with the researcher to develop products such as infographics, tool kits or training materials that are based on the research findings and could be used by those stakeholders to improve quality of care or quality of life for residents in long term care.

As part of this mission, AFA is accepting applications for its fall Family Respite Care Grant program, which is designed to help alleviate the cost of respite care for families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's or a related dementia. Grants are awarded to AFA nonprofit member organizations, which must use the funds to provide scholarships to clients with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and/or their families with financial needs. The scholarships are for respite services, such as adult-day programs, in-home aides, and companion care or overnight respite at the grantee's own organization or another organization.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to support mechanistic clinical studies aimed at understanding the impact of arts-based approaches in palliative care for symptom management. This FOA is intended to support mechanistic clinical studies to provide an evidence base for the use of the arts in palliative care for symptom management. The objective is to understand the biological, physiological, neurological, psychological, and/or sociological mechanisms by which the arts exert their effects on symptom management during and throughout the palliative care continuum. The goal is for the research supported under this FOA to develop an evidence-base that could be used as a basis for the uptake of arts-based therapies in palliative care settings, among individuals across the lifespan, with a wide variety of serious chronic conditions and their accompanying symptoms. This FOA is not intended to determine efficacy or the comparative effectiveness of interventions, or to assess interventions designed to treat the underlying cause of a particular disease state.

The Lifespan Respite Care Act’s purpose is threefold: expand and enhance respite care services to family caregivers; improve the statewide dissemination and coordination of respite care; and provide, supplement, or improve access and quality of respite care services to family caregivers, thereby reducing family caregiver strain. Since 2009, ACL has been making grants to states to develop or enhance their ability to provide coordinated, high quality respite services to caregivers of persons of all ages with disabilities. States who have received grants under this program have made considerable progress in building or strengthening their capacities to provide respite services. With this new funding opportunity, grantees will be asked to carefully examine the extent to which their state has a Lifespan Respite System and propose approaches that enable greater realization of such a system.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks to stimulate research that tests optimal end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) interventions/models of care that are based on individual- and family-centered outcomes. The testing of EOLPC interventions and models of care are urgently needed that address racial, ethnic and/or cultural diversity in children and adults for those with serious, advanced illness. Trials are needed to test efficacy and effectiveness of these interventions and/or models of care.

This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is intended to promote behavioral and social research on the dementia care workforce and the impact on outcomes for persons living with Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease-related dementia (AD/ADRD) and their families. Broad areas of interest include (1) how economic and policy factors drive the composition and quality of the dementia care workforce; (2) demographic and familial factors that influence demand for and supply of dementia care workers; (3) training and certification effects on quality and retention of dementia care workers; and (4) the development of data resources required to study these issues.

Increased longevity continues to become more prevalent in Native American communities. This trend has placed greater demands on service delivery systems, which are even more complex and fragmented than in non-Indian communities. In recognition of this, under the Older Americans Act (OAA) Amendments of 2006, Congress mandated the support of at least two (2), and not more than four (4), Resource Centers that will focus on issues and concerns affecting individuals who are older Native Americans. The primary goal of these Centers is to enhance knowledge about older Native Americans and thereby to increase and improve the delivery of services to them. The National Resource Centers on Native American Elders (Centers) will concentrate on the development and provision of technical information and expertise and best practices to Indian tribal organizations, Native American communities, educational institutions including Tribal Colleges and Universities, and professionals and paraprofessionals in the field. Each Center must have a national focus and direct its resources to one or more of the areas of primary concern on which the center will focus which shall be; health issues, long-term care, including in-home care; elder abuse; and other problems and issues facing Native communities. Each Center is expected to incorporate the concepts and principles and cultural competencies into all aspects of their staffing, program, and activities. Additionally, each Center's activities will promote one or more of the AoA priority areas. These priority areas are; 1) make it easier for older people to access an integrated array of health and long-term care services, 2) help older people stay active and healthy, 3) support families in their efforts to care for their loved ones at home and in the community, 4) ensure the rights of older people and prevent their abuse, neglect and exploitation, 5) training and technical assistance, and 6) coordination within the university structure. Established in 1986, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association represents the specialty of palliative nursing and provides support for the profession through education programs, research initiatives, and advocacy. In support of this mission, the association is accepting applications for its HPNF Certification Research Grant. Studies done in the acute-care setting suggest that care environments with a higher proportion of certified nurses have better patient outcomes. Replicating this research in the hospice or palliative care environment has potential to advance the understanding of the value of palliative nursing certification. Through the program, a single grant of up to $15,000 will be awarded to an exploratory, pilot, or feasibility study with the potential to lead to a larger-scale project that can help build a better understanding of the impact of palliative nursing certification on patient outcomes.
