This Notice is to inform the community that NIH has revised its approach to resuming operations after the government shutdown.

This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is intended to promote behavioral and social research on the dementia care workforce and the impact on outcomes for persons living with Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease-related dementia (AD/ADRD) and their families. Broad areas of interest include (1) how economic and policy factors drive the composition and quality of the dementia care workforce; (2) demographic and familial factors that influence demand for and supply of dementia care workers; (3) training and certification effects on quality and retention of dementia care workers; and (4) the development of data resources required to study these issues.

NOTICE:  Applications are submitted to the American Heart Association via Grants@Heart, a Web-based application system.  Grants@Heart is scheduled to open on May 15, 2013.  In the meantime, please review the program listings, instructions and information in preparation for your application. 

With this Dear Colleague Letter, NSF is providing advance notice of a change in the eligibility of prospective applicants to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) to allow the community to plan accordingly. Effective as of the 2017 competition (Fall 2016 deadlines), NSF will limit graduate students to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school. No change is made to the eligibility of undergraduates, of bachelor's degree holders without any graduate study, or of individuals who have had an interruption in graduate study of at least two consecutive years.

In September, Miami received notice from the government that our new F&A rates are: 44.5% for On Campus Organized Research 44.0% On Campus Sponsored Instruction 39.0% On Campus Other Sponsored Activities 26.0% Off Campus All Programs These rates are effective beginning September 1, 2014. Awards received beginning in September and all proposal submissions going forward will be required to use the new rates.

The mission of the Administration for Community Living (ACL) Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program is to empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse. Through outreach, counseling, and education, the SMP program increases awareness and understanding of health care programs to protect Medicare beneficiaries from the economic and health-related consequences associated with Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse. ACL currently provides grant funding to support 53 SMP projects, including grantees in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The SMP projects use this funding to provide local outreach, education, and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries through a trained volunteer workforce. SMP projects teach Medicare beneficiaries to protect their Medicare numbers, to detect billing discrepancies on their quarterly Medicare Summary Notice statements, and to report suspicious activity for further investigation. In addition, SMP projects actively disseminate fraud prevention and identification information through the media, outreach campaigns, and community events.

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), in partnership with the National Institute on Aging (NIA), announces an opportunity for NIBIB-supported investigators to request administrative supplements to develop new tools, technologies and approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and understanding of Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's-disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). These supplements will be funded by NIA as part of the NIA strategic plan to support the development of innovative strategies to prevent, diagnose and treat AD/ADRD.

This notice solicits applications for the Rapid Response Rural Data Analysis and Issue Specific Rural Research Studies program. The purposes of this program are to assist rural communities with (1) conducting rapid data analyses, and (2) short term issue-specific rural research studies to help communities and policymakers understand the impact of current and proposed policies and regulations as well as provide information that will improve access to health care and population health in rural America. Due to the nature of rural policy analysis and formulation, rural organizations and health care providers often require timely information that is available only through specialized analysis of databases of information compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), other federal and state agencies, or private organizations. The awardee is responsible for collaborating with HHS agencies to compile and analyze the data that is requested in a timely manner. The awardee will also collaborate with rural stakeholders to determine what data sets are needed. T

The Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology (DGCG) at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) supports clinical trials on topics relating to aging and the elderly.  Researchers with interest in clinical trials with direct costs of up to $2 million per year are encouraged to contact the Clinical Trials Branch staff at gcgquery@nia.nih.gov.  DGCG also invites suggestions from the scientific community regarding needs for large (over $2 million direct and/ or over $3 million total costs per year) clinical trials in topic areas relevant to DGCG's mission.  NIA will use your suggestions in its planning process to select high-priority topic areas in which significant existing knowledge indicates the need for large clinical trials to provide more definitive information on risks and benefits of interventions for diseases and conditions in the elderly.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) seeks input on the restructuring of the NIH grant application instructions. We invite comments from any interested parties. We encourage feedback from PD/PIs, Administrative Offices, Offices of Sponsored Programs, Systems Administrators, and any other parties that rely on our application submission information.

As an administrative supplement, the work proposed needs to be within the scope of the research or training that is already supported. Center awards and resource awards are most likely to be able to justify these supplements as they tend to have a broad content scope. Some research grants will also qualify if the current research is on a related topic. Topics may include, but are not limited to, cognitive decline in aging, caregiving, or research on the biology of neurodegeneration. Research proposed in supplement applications should have clear relevance to ADRD. The proposed work may include pilot projects, resource development, or secondary analysis of existing data. In each case, the work proposed should be feasible to complete within a one-year timeframe and with the limited funds permitted. It should also show promise of becoming a more substantial project that might attract funding.
