The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows program provides the nation's most comprehensive fellowship experience at the nexus of health science, policy and politics in Washington, D.C. It is an outstanding opportunity for exceptional midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care policy promoting the health of the nation. Fellows participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health, health care and health policy. The fellowship requires, at a minimum, a 12-month residential experience in Washington, D.C., with additional support for health policy leadership development activities. The program will select up to six fellows.

This FOA encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications for research and development of technologies that monitor health or deliver care in a real-time, accessible, effective, and minimally obtrusive way. These systems are expected to integrate, process, analyze, communicate, and present data so that the individuals are engaged and empowered in their own healthcare with reduced burden to care providers. The development of these technology systems has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, people aging with mild impairments, as well as individuals with chronic conditions.

The Arthritis Foundation is requesting letters of interest (LOI) for research projects that show promise to achieve a faster cure for arthritis and related diseases. The LOI will inform the development of a new Scientific Strategy to be announced in November 2014 and a Request for Proposals (RFP) to be released in December 2014. The Arthritis Foundation is particularly interested in research regarding fact-based metrics to guide actions and policies to improve the health of people across the lifespan with arthritis and related diseases; expediting movement between basic research to patient-centered research to population-based research to point of care; and improving clinical decision-making and health outcomes at point of care through the use of new products, tools, and technologies for people across the lifespan with arthritis and related diseases.

The mission of the Administration for Community Living (ACL) Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program is to empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse. Through outreach, counseling, and education, the SMP program increases awareness and understanding of health care programs to protect Medicare beneficiaries from the economic and health-related consequences associated with Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse. ACL currently provides grant funding to support 53 SMP projects, including grantees in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The SMP projects use this funding to provide local outreach, education, and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries through a trained volunteer workforce. SMP projects teach Medicare beneficiaries to protect their Medicare numbers, to detect billing discrepancies on their quarterly Medicare Summary Notice statements, and to report suspicious activity for further investigation. In addition, SMP projects actively disseminate fraud prevention and identification information through the media, outreach campaigns, and community events.

The Brookdale Foundation Group works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and to improve the lives of senior citizens. The Foundation's Relatives as Parents Program provides support for the creation or expansion of services for grandparents and other relatives who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting when the biological parents are unable to do so. Funded programs must include supportive services to relative caregivers and the children they are raising, with emphasis on families that are not in the formal foster care system. Programs must also include regular ongoing support, and educational or social groups for relative caregivers and the children in their care. Up to 15 programs will receive a seed grant of $15,000 ($10,000 and $5,000 respectively), contingent on progress made during year one and potential for continuity in the future. These technologies may be novel sensor or monitoring systems, home-use point-of-care devices, home or mobile therapy or rehabilitation tools, or information systems and should have the goal of fostering healthy and independent living for aging adults with HLBS conditions. The development of such technologies should incorporate specific human factors for aging adults including disabilities, mild impairments, as well as chronic HLBS conditions. Technology usability for these populations must be incorporated early in the development of the design. Usability considerations include but are not limited to patient-facing displays, hearing and visual impairments, tactile limitations, literacy, and design preferences between men and women. These improvements in technology design could yield more accurate and earlier detection of changes that may interfere with healthy and independent living for older adults.

One of the premier foundations dedicated to improving the standard and quality of life for adults age 65 or older, the Retirement Research Foundation advocates for the inclusion, prosperity, connection, and voice of older Americans. In support of this mission, the foundation is accepting applications for projects in aging through its Responsive Grants program. This notice solicits applications for the Rapid Response Rural Data Analysis and Issue Specific Rural Research Studies program. The purposes of this program are to assist rural communities with (1) conducting rapid data analyses, and (2) short term issue-specific rural research studies to help communities and policymakers understand the impact of current and proposed policies and regulations as well as provide information that will improve access to health care and population health in rural America. Due to the nature of rural policy analysis and formulation, rural organizations and health care providers often require timely information that is available only through specialized analysis of databases of information compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), other federal and state agencies, or private organizations. The awardee is responsible for collaborating with HHS agencies to compile and analyze the data that is requested in a timely manner. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) seeks to stimulate innovative ideas and impactful research to better understand the complexities around developing appropriate approaches for effective diagnosis, prevention, therapeutic interventions and integrated clinical care for HIV-associated non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Specifically, this initiative will support research in the following areas: a) Basic sciences to address etiopathogenesis of NCDs in Persons Living with HIV (PLWH); b) Aging process in PLWH; c) Diagnostics tools for early detection of NCDs in PLWH; d) Therapeutic interventions to explore optimal drug regimens for PLWH with NCDs; e) Behavioral studies for better quality of life of PLWH with NCDs; and f) Clinical studies for better patient centered care for PLWH with NCDs. The R21 grant mechanism is intended to encourage exploratory/developmental research by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of project development and assessing feasibility of the proposed studies (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/r21.htm ). It is hoped that this preliminary research will lay the foundation for larger studies that can lead to applications to other organizations or NIH institutes that support HIV-associated NCD research.

The Michigan Health Fund currently is accepting applications to its Healthy Aging program, which seeks to improve access to and the availability of integrated, comprehensive services for older adults and their caregivers. To that end, grants ranging from between $100,000 and $500,000 will be awarded in support of strategies and service delivery models focused on improving health outcomes for older adults and those who care for them. Grantmaking categories identified by the foundation include: Health Aging - The fund supports strategies designed to improve the health and well-being of older adults, including the development and piloting of new models aimed at better supporting older adults; the replication and expansion of evidence-based or promising models, the expansion of a current program to a new target population, or the replication of an existing program that does not yet exist in a local community and does not have a funding mechanism available; strategies that improve access to current or expanded services; projects that address the structural barriers and inefficiencies preventing various systems (e.g., education, health, social) from delivering care to older adults; and projects that address a significant issue area (e.g., social isolation) or various health disparities impacting older adults.

The Jean Griswold Foundation provides grants to select nonprofit organizations to build, strengthen, and sustain programs that enhance the quality of life for low-income seniors and adults with disabilities who choose to age in place.

The purpose of this FOA is to support the development of a Clinician-Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Coordinating Center that will organize activities and provide research resources for clinician-investigators across the United States who are focusing their careers on aging research. This FOA is intended to build upon the substantial investments made by NIA through the GEMSSTAR program and related career development efforts by supporting expanded activities to reach a broader community of clinician-investigators. The specific goals of this initiative are to convey scientific and research knowledge on aging research; foster networking and collaboration between clinician-scientist leaders in aging research and clinician-investigators across specialties who wish to focus on aging research; provide mentoring and career development support for emerging clinician-scientists committed to pursuing aging research in their clinical specialty or discipline; and advance transdisciplinary research projects in aging. Ultimately, the Clin-STAR Coordinating Center is intended to provide a multi-faceted national research platform leading to improved patient-centered care for older adults across specialties and disciplines.

The objectives of the Lifespan Respite Technical Assistance and Resource Center (TARC) is to provide technical assistance to the Lifespan Respite Program grantees and the field. The primary objectives of this funding opportunity are: (1) further identify, develop, and disseminate training and TA resources to ACL's Lifespan Respite Program grantees (past, present and future) that address the role of respite as a means to supporting families in their own development of natural supports; (2) strengthen the national capacities at the federal, state and local levels to provide respite services as an essential family support across the age and disability spectrum; and (3) support activities and innovations to develop an evidence base for respite care and related services.

This FOA invites applications that address clinical and translational research gaps in the study of end-of-life care needs in order to improve quality of life at the end of life of people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and their families. Research that either employs (a) secondary analysis of existing data from longitudinal cohort studies or from administrative records or (b) primary data collection for Stage I behavioral intervention development is particularly encouraged.
