This Small Research Grant (R03) will support important and innovative projects focused on basic science approaches to elucidate neurodegenerative mechanisms/pathways of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). Proposed projects should ultimately aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and/or care for individuals with AD/ADRD. The program seeks (i) to facilitate the next generation of researchers in the United States to pursue research and academic careers in neuroscience, AD/ADRD, and healthy brain aging and (ii) to stimulate established researchers who are not currently doing AD/ADRD research to perform pilot studies toward developing new, innovative AD/ADRD research programs that leverage and build upon their existing expertise. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, as well as individuals with disabilities, are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.

The NIA Behavioral and Social Research LEaders in Alzheimer's Disease and Its Related Dementias (NIA BSR LEADR) program supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose to use behavioral and social science perspectives and approaches for highly innovative, impactful, and potentially transformative theoretical, empirical, and clinical research addressing the challenges raised by Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) for individuals, their families, and society. Applications are welcome from individuals with diverse backgrounds. NIA encourages applications on a variety of AD/ADRD topics in which behavioral and social research can contribute, such as dementia care, dementia caregiver research, cognitive and dementia epidemiology, behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD, early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD, prevention of AD/ADRD, and disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes.

Specifically, this FOA will support archiving and leveraging existing data sets for analyses of projects covering a wide array of topics relating to AD/ADRD. The overall goal of this FOA is (i) to encourage the next generation of U.S. researchers to pursue research and academic careers in neuroscience, AD/ADRD, and healthy brain aging and (ii) to stimulate established researchers who are not currently doing AD/ADRD research to perform pilot studies developing new, innovative AD/ADRD research programs that leverage and build upon their existing expertise. Despite established associations between white matter lesions and cognitive impairment including dementia, little prospective information is available to define the characteristics of white matter lesions and associated comorbid clinical factors that cause further cognitive impairment, ultimately resulting in dementia. This initiative will support one large prospective clinical research study in the U.S. of patients engaged with the health care system because of incidental white matter lesions found on neuroimaging, who present with cognitive complaints, and who thus are at risk for cognitive decline. The goal will be to determine the volume and anatomical features that are both necessary and sufficient to cause cognitive impairment or dementia.

The purpose of this FOA is to support the development of a Clinician-Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Coordinating Center that will organize activities and provide research resources for clinician-investigators across the United States who are focusing their careers on aging research. This FOA is intended to build upon the substantial investments made by NIA through the GEMSSTAR program and related career development efforts by supporting expanded activities to reach a broader community of clinician-investigators. The specific goals of this initiative are to convey scientific and research knowledge on aging research; foster networking and collaboration between clinician-scientist leaders in aging research and clinician-investigators across specialties who wish to focus on aging research; provide mentoring and career development support for emerging clinician-scientists committed to pursuing aging research in their clinical specialty or discipline; and advance transdisciplinary research projects in aging.
