The NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Grant provides support for experienced investigators (full professor or equivalent) conducting neurobiological and behavioral research. A one-year grant of $100,000 is provided for established scientists pursuing innovative projects in diverse areas of neurobiological research. Areas of particular interest to the Scientific Council's Selection Committee include patient populations with unique or unusual characteristics and central nervous system developments

The INSPIRE awards program was established to address some of the most complicated and pressing scientific problems that lie at the intersection of traditional disciplines.  It is intended to encourage investigators to submit bold, exceptional proposals that some may consider to be at a disadvantage in a standard NSF review process; it is not intended for proposals that are more appropriate for existing award mechanisms.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/ organizations addressing preclinical research in model organisms of neurodevelopmental disorders. Applications submitted to this FOA should propose to develop, validate, and/or calibrate outcome measures, surrogate markers, and biomarkers in model organisms that can inform and effectively translate to human clinical trials for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The Grass Foundation and the American Neurological Association (ANA) are now accepting nominations for The Grass Foundation - ANA Award in Neuroscience.  This Award was established in 2007 to honor outstanding young investigators doing research in basic or clinical neuroscience.  The Grass Foundation www.grassfoundation.org was established in 1955 by Albert and Ellen Grass to advance research and education in neuroscience, with a special focus on investigators early in their careers. 

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to support and promote broad applications of optogenetic tools for research on normal and/or pathological aging of neural systems including sensory, motor, cognitive, emotional, autonomic, sleep, and neurovascular, or Alzheimer's disease (AD), as well as to encourage additional development of aging and AD specific optogenetic tools.

The grand prize winner of the Eppendorf and Science Prize for Neurobiology is selected along with up to three finalists by an independent board of scientists that is chaired by Science's senior Editor, Dr. Peter Stern. The winner is awarded US$25,000. This is a personal gift. The grand prize winner's essay is published in Science and on Science Online. Furthermore, the winner receives a free, five-year subscription to Science and Science Online and US$1,000 in free Eppendorf products.

Like the Foundation's ongoing Biology of Aging Scholar Awards program, the Neuroscience Scholars program is intended to provide researchers with the support and resources to develop innovative research programs aimed at gaining insight into the fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie normal biological function, and when dysfunctional, lead to illness.

MDA supports research aimed at developing treatments for the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system. These are the muscular dystrophies (among which are Duchenne and Becker); motor neuron diseases (including ALS and SMA); the peripheral nerve disorders (CMT and Friedreich's ataxia); inflammatory myopathies; disorders of the neuromuscular junction; metabolic diseases of muscle as well as other myopathies.

The Ninth International Prize of 25,000 Euro will be awarded in 2013 by the Kemali/IBRO Foundation to a scientist less than 45 years of age on December 31, 2012 who has made outstanding contributions to Basic or Clinical Neuroscience.

Objective To help trainees initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research while obtaining significant research results under the supervision of a sponsor or mentor; supports individuals before they're ready for some stage of independent research. Science Focus Research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts.

The overall goal is to provide the initial resources to support a larger grant application. Priority will be given to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Senior researchers new to the area will also be considered.

The International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) is pleased to call for pre-proposal applications for its 2013 Graduate Student Fellowships for Alternatives to the Use of Animals in Science. The fellowships provide up to $12,500 annually in stipendiary support and up to $2,500 for supplies per year. The fellowships are renewable annually for up to three years. Continued funding is dependent on student progress and availability of funds.

As an initiative of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Aspiring Physicians & Research Scientists Conference is a two-and-a-half day enhancement program that focuses on science innovation and world-class care. Cleveland Clinic physician and research scientist-led presentations and mentoring/coaching sessions provide students a unique opportunity to interface with our world renowned staff. An abstract poster competition provides students the opportunity to showcase their research. Our target audience includes underrepresented minority science, math and pre-med college students. It is designed to increase representation of American Indian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander physicians, research scientists, physician investigators and physician leaders. Applicants, who must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in college majoring in math, science, or pre-med will be notified of acceptance via email by April 19, 2013. Research students interested in participating in the poster research scholarship competition must submit an abstract of their work by April 12, 2013. Applicants accepted to present their posters will be notified by email by April 19, 2013.

The Neuroscience Prize honors scientists for major discoveries that have advanced the understanding of the nervous system. The Prize, established in 2004, is an unrestricted cash award of $500,000, a gold medal inscribed with the recipient's name, and a citation describing the achievement for which the recipient is being honored. It is awarded each year to a person or persons chosen by a distinguished advisory board of neuroscience experts from nominations that are received from around the world. Nominations for the Neuroscience Prize are invited annually and may be submitted by individuals, organizations, and institutions that are active in or have an appreciation for contemporary neuroscience research and study.

The initiative will support a multicenter, systematic and comprehensive investigation of the neuropathology of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and the delayed effects of traumatic brain injury using postmortem biospecimens, and histological and neuroimaging tools as a foundation for future studies to develop in vivo diagnostics.

The BDSRA is pleased to announce that funds are available to conduct research directly relevant to all forms of Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL, Batten disease), rare, fatal, lysosomal neurodegenerative disorders that strike infants, children and adults. Research is needed across a broad spectrum addressing the underlying mechanisms of neural dysfunction and degeneration in each form of NCL from dysfunctional soluble lysosomal enzymes (PPT1, TPP1, CTSD), transmembrane proteins (CLN3, CLN6, MFSD8, CLN8) and other proteins implicated in lysosome function, membrane trafficking, or neurotransmitter release (CLN5, CSPα). Proposals will be considered for all forms of NCL, with emphasis on CLN1, CLN2, and CLN3. 

The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project, by systematically cataloging transcribed regions, transcription factor binding sites, and chromatin structure, has recently found that a larger fraction of the human genome may be functional than was previously appreciated. However, our understanding of the role of these functional genomic elements in neurodevelopment and mental disorders is at an early stage. This funding opportunity will support studies that identify non-coding functional genomic elements and elucidate their role in the etiology of mental disorders.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research grant applications from institutions/organizations to investigate mechanisms by which the gut microbiome modulates the development and function of brain circuits that subserve behavioral functions of direct relevance to the mission of the NIMH.Because initial colonization of the gut by microbiota occurs early in life and may influence the subsequent development and modifiability of the central nervous system, developmental studies are of particular interest. Applicants may propose to use wild-type, gnotobiotic, or specific pathogen-free model organisms and/or human cohorts. With this FOA, the NIMH encourages investigator teams to initiate hypothesis-driven research in this cross-cutting research area and to identify promising mechanistic leads for future basic and translational research that will advance the mission of the NIMH.
