The SBIR program, as established by law, is intended to meet the following goals: stimulate technological innovation in the private sector; strengthen the role of small business in meeting Federal research or research and development (R/R&D) needs; increase the commercial application of Federally-supported research results; foster and encourage participation by socially and economically disadvantaged small business concerns and women-owned business concerns in the SBIR program; and improve the return on investment from Federally-funded research for economic and social benefits to the Nation.
Announcement supports applied and translational research to advance the development of knowledge and materiel products for rehabilitation and restoration of function following TBI. PIs should explain how their work will inform the development, refinement, and/or revision of existing standards of care, clinical recommendations, or guidelines. TBI is defined as being caused by (1) a direct blow or impact to the head, (2) a penetrating head injury, or (3) an exposure to external forces such as blast waves that disrupt the function of the brain. Not all blows to the head or exposure to external forces result in a TBI. The severity of TBI may range from "mild," a brief change in mental status or consciousness, to "severe," an extended period of unconsciousness or confusion after the injury. Definitions of TBI severity can be found in Table 1 of the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Concussion-Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The FY17/18 PH/TBIRP CTRR-CRA supports clinical research but not clinical trials. Supported research can include observational research studies. The Clinical Research Award (CTRR-CRA) is intended to support clinical research focused on understanding the clinical sequelae and mechanisms of recovery associated with TBI and TBI rehabilitation interventions. The overarching goals of this award are to address TBI-related impairments and deficits including sensory, sensorimotor, and cognitive dysfunction to (1) develop and validate rehabilitation outcome measures; (2) define and evaluate mechanisms of injury progression or recovery associated with rehabilitation interventions; and (3) improve clinician-driven assessment strategies to guide return-to-duty decision making.

For the 2018 ERG cycle, grants of up to $30,000 will be awarded for research in seven priority areas, including general hearing health, central auditory processing disorders, hearing loss in children, hyperacusis, Ménière's disease, tinnitus, and Usher's syndrome.
The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was established in 2000 by Patrick J. McGovern and Lore Harp McGovern, with the goal of improving human welfare, communication, and understanding through their support for neuroscience research.
The institute has announced a call for nominations for its twelfth annual Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience.
Now in its fifteenth year, the Scolnick Prize is designed to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the McGovern Institute, consists of a $150,000 award, plus an inscribed gift. In addition, the recipient will present a public lecture at the McGovern Institute in spring 2018. A gala dinner for the recipient and invited guests follows the prize lecture.

The David Wechsler Early Career Grant for Innovative Work in Cognition supports early career psychologists pursuing innovative work in neuropsychology, intelligence and/or the assessment aspects of cognition. The primary goal of the NIMH Career Transition Award for Tenure-Track and Tenured Intramural Investigators (K22) Program (hereafter abbreviated as the NIMH Career Transition K22 Program) is to provide support for career intramural investigators at NIMH who aim to transition from the Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) to an independent research faculty position in the extramural community. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of meritorious research in mental health-related fields.
The purpose of this research is to identify, implement, and evaluate the use of effective strategies and tools for provider and patient use to taper and/or discontinue opioids, benzodiazepines, and other medications in which risk outweighs benefits to prevent falls, overdose, and other injuries among community dwelling older adults.
The purpose of the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage research on the etiology of depressive symptoms that occur in the context of a sudden onset acute illness. Although it is known that depressive symptoms may linger and affect functional recovery long after physical recovery from an acute insult, there is a gap in knowledge about the pathobiology that may underlie these incident depressive symptoms. A greater understanding of the etiological factors that contribute to and/or mitigate a trajectory of depressive symptoms may inform a personalized, holistic approach to managing recovery from acute illness.

As part of this mission, APF is accepting applications for its APF Trauma Psychology Grant. Through the annual program, a single grant of up to $3,000 will be awarded in support innovative work aimed at alleviating trauma.
To be eligible, applicants must be an early-career psychologist (no more than ten years postdoctoral); be affiliated with a nonprofit charitable, educational, or scientific institution, or governmental entity operating exclusively for charitable and educational purposes; have a demonstrated knowledge of trauma and trauma research; have demonstrated competence and capacity to execute the proposed work; and, if human participants are involved, have IRB approval from his/her host institution before funding can be awarded.
Founded in 1972, the Tourette Association of America (formerly known as the Tourette Syndrome Association) has emerged as the premier national nonprofit organization working to make life better for all people affected by Tourette and tic disorders. The association advances its work by raising public awareness and fostering social acceptance; working to advance scientific understanding, treatment options, and care; educating professionals to better serve the needs of children, adults, and families challenged by Tourette and tic disorders; advocating for public policies and services that promote positive school, work, and social environments; providing help, hope, and a supportive community across the nation; and empowering its community to deal with the complexities of this spectrum of disorders.
To that end, grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for basic and clinical studies on all aspects of Tourette syndrome.
To be eligible, investigators are required to have an advanced degree such as a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent or be allied professionals with advanced degrees such as R.N.s, Drs. of O.T., social workers, and related fields. Investigators from nonprofit and for-profit organizations can apply.
Funding from this award will support the first year of a sub-study involving 5 of the 21 ABCD sites to include measures of delinquency and victimization in their investigations. The sub-study will address key questions on the interactions between substance use, brain development, delinquency, and victimization. The ABCD Study is the largest longitudinal study of brain development and child health in the US, following approximately 10,000 children (ages 9-10) across 21 sites into their early adulthood years. The ABCD Study, which is funded by NIDA, seeks to explore the standards of normal brain development across a young person's life trajectory, as well as numerous facets of adolescent brain, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications that develop and test multilevel interventions to improve follow-up to abnormal screening tests for breast, cervical, colorectal, or lung cancers. Improving follow-up to abnormal screening tests is dependent on factors at the patient, provider, clinical team, clinic, healthcare institution, or community setting levels.
