5 Reasons to break the DRM on your ebooks (and free your collection) - Digital Trends - 2 views

  •
"This week, ebook lovers got yet another reminder of why DRM (Digital Rights Management) is terrible for ebooks. While attending a library conference in Singapore, Jim O'Donnell lost access to the titles in his Google Play Books app. Apparently, the app detected that he was in a country where Google Books aren't available and subsequently denied him access to his books. Stories like this crop up every now and then, each time highlighting some crazy ebook restriction or policy that most people aren't even aware of. The way things are set up, you kind of need to protect the digital books you buy from the companies that sell them. There are a growing number of ways and reasons why Amazon, Google, or a book publisher might strip you of your digital library. The best way to protect yourself is to break the DRM on your ebooks for the purpose of keeping a local, personal backup."

Judge Tosses Booksellers' Suit Against Publishers, Amazon - Publishers Weekly - 0 views

  •
"Federal Judge Jed Rakoff has dismissed a lawsuit filed by independent booksellers against Amazon and the big six publishers that alleged a murky conspiracy to restrain trade via Amazon's use of proprietary DRM in its Kindle e-reading platform. In his 18-page decision tossing the suit, Rakoff found that the booksellers' core claim-that the publishers had engaged in a conspiracy with Amazon to keep rivals from selling e-books on the Kindle-had no supporting evidence, and no plausible motive."

Medium, message, and beauty of web-based books - teXtes - 1 views

  •
"Don't you think it is more crucial to make the web ready for books, than to make books ready for the web ? To make the web ready for books will improve it. To try to make books perfectly ready for the web will make them run the risk of losing what makes them books. The real challenge is to keep the best of both worlds, not to merge them. And if new forms are invented, new kind of ways of sharing thoughts - and it's already the case : that's perfect."

In a world of peak attention, how can books survive? | The Bookseller - 0 views

  • The real question is how reading will compete in a world where other services and offerings are getting increasingly aggressive in hijacking and keeping people’s attention
  • Maybe the effects are already beginning to show? 50 Shades of Grey, anyone?
  • he result is that visual culture is effectively winning the cultural war for aspiration.

  • We need to make it “cool” to read, write, and opt out of the constant social pressure to participate on social media.
  • Finally, publishers need to join the data feedback game like their life depends on it.
  • We must build more creative and flexible business models; run workshops with famous authors, focus on merchandising and wider cultural adaptation
  • The future of commerce is based on continued engagement and attention. The music labels long ago realised that their remit in this new world is much wider than simply printing and distribution
  • It's not going to be an easy transition for the book trade, but it needs to start happening now.
