    Some of the progress made last year in cleaning up the Hanford nuclear reservation: -A leaky basin that once stored spent nuclear fuel has been torn out of the ground. -N Reactor is just a shell, gutted of hazardous materials. -Waste sites along the Columbia River have been dug up and buildings torn down. -More weapons-grade plutonium is gone, shipped offsite. -Nearly half of a one-of-a-kind plant to treat waste has been designed and built. -New technologies for sucking waste out of 177 underground tanks is ready to be deployed. Some of the significant work ahead: -Some 53 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste - enough to cover 123 football fields, including end zones, a foot deep - stews in those underground tanks, some of which are known to have leaked and threaten the Columbia River. The tanks must be emptied and the waste treated. -The plant where that waste will be converted to a stable glass form must be completed and tested. The U.S. Department of Energy now says it will begin operating in 2019. -More old nuclear reactors need to be decommissioned and cocooned, and ancillary buildings at the site need to be decontaminated and torn down. -Drums of radioactive and hazardous waste and debris need to be dug up and hauled off site. -Tainted groundwater ne2eds to be pumped out of the ground and treated.

    Just two years ago, Morris was in the running to become a nuclear fuel recycling site. But a backlash - in evidence at a Bolingbrook hearing Dec. 4 - has the Department of Energy asking Americans if the U.S. should recycle fuel and how it should happen. The department wanted three facilities: a research lab, a recycling center and a recycling reactor. The reactor would make electricity while destroying the long-lasting radioactive fuel leftovers. The plan was part of President Bush's Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) to increase nuclear energy use. Missed the hearing?     Dan Stout, the Dept. of Energy's director of nuclear fuel recycling, said the comment period on the draft programmatic environmental impact statement for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership would be extended beyond the current deadline of Dec. 16. At this time, however, a new date has not been set, Stout said at last night's GNEP hearing in Oak Ridge.l Stout also indicated DOE was considering a request for additional GNEP hearings at other sites.     "Cooper Nuclear Station, an electric power plant in southeast Nebraska, declared a "Notification of Unusual Event" Tuesday, June 22nd at 2:06 a.m. The notification was made as part of safety and emergency preparedness procedures the station follows when flooding conditions are in effect. The procedures dictate when the Missouri River's water level reaches 42.5 feet, or greater than 899 feet above sea level, a notification of unusual event is declared. There is no threat to plant employees or to the public; the plant continues to operate safely. Appropriate Local, County, State, and Federal agencies were also notified, as part of Cooper's Emergency Preparedness plan. As a precautionary measure, when the river reached 897 feet above sea level last week, Cooper management initiated steps to barricade external doorways to the plant with sandbags. Should the river's level increase to 900 feet above sea level, plant personnel will also barricade internal doorways as another layer of protection for facility equipment."

    Randall Parrish, a researcher at the University of Leicester, England, found depleted uranium exposure in 20 percent of residents he tested in Colonie, N.Y., where a company once produced uranium weapons for the military. He recommended that ATSDR revisit the area because its earlier health study, without benefit of his test method, assumed it couldn't detect past exposure or tie it to illness years after the plant closed.

    Advocates say a nuclear power "renaissance" can solve global energy problems, but construction of new reactors in the U.S. faces a number of barriers, not the least of which is nuclear waste. Delaware Senator Thomas Carper, who actively supports nuclear power, hosted a panel of experts on Monday to discuss nuclear waste at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT on Monday also updated its 2003 study on how nuclear power can play a role in reducing carbon emissions (click for PDF). The four panelists--executive director of the upcoming MIT Nuclear Fuels Cycle study Charles Forsberg, MIT professor of nuclear science and engineering Andrew Kadak, Harvard University associate professor and proliferation expert Matthew Bunn, and MIT Energy Initiative director Ernest Moniz--all favored more nuclear power.

    "The Commission, led by Lee Hamilton and Brent Scowcroft, will provide recommendations on managing used fuel and nuclear waste Washington, D.C. - As part of the Obama Administration's commitment to restarting America's nuclear industry, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu today announced the formation of a Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future to provide recommendations for developing a safe, long-term solution to managing the Nation's used nuclear fuel and nuclear waste. The Commission is being co-chaired by former Congressman Lee Hamilton and former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft. In light of the Administration's decision not to proceed with the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, President Obama has directed Secretary Chu to establish the Commission to conduct a comprehensive review of policies for managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle. The move by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy is spurred by concerns about liability - if an accident at a Canadian plant spreads damage across the border, Americans might be able to sue the parent company. The result is a Canadian company cut off from the technical advances of its parent, a leading player in the industry. The company also won't allow any equipment built or designed by the U.S. parent to be used in Canadian reactors for the same reason.
